You should be taking note of the finishing positions in the bottom left, rather than the dislikes. Quite a few of the top 10 were first place winners! (And most likely people who weren't happy with them winning disliked the videos afterwards, negating the dislike ratio as a mark of quality.)

This is just bad list without any context, most of those dislikes are based on toxicity of the contest - country against country (sometimes with good reasons), songs being weird etc. Most of those songs are good and some even very good (for their genre ofc). You can notice that many of them won.

Yep I wanted to mention that. A list has a lot of Armenian and Azeri songs (Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict), Russian and Ukrainian songs (Ukraine war), Israel songs (Israel-Palestine situation), LGBT performer songs etc. It's clearly a mix of bad songs and politically downvoted songs.

Just because a "song" wins Eurovision doesn't make it good! There's been songs that have finished in last place that have been better than the winning song that year! Heck every other song was better than Toy in 2018 or Amar Pelos Dois in 2017 and we all know Ukraine's last two wins had nothing to do with the actual songs and everything to do with Crimea and then Ukraine itself being invaded by Russia! The last actually good song to win Eurovision was Only Teardrops in 2013!

If you listen to earlier instances of the Eurovision, you'll see more songs in the country's original language. The thing is that languages other than English, French, German, Italian, kept getting shafted, and so everyone kind of moved towards singing in English. Also, with pop music being internationally sang in English since the begining with bands like The Beatles, it became very common for pop music everywhere to be sang in English. Also, I dont know if you noticed, but a fair number of the songs in the top 10 were 1st places, which probably only got a lot of dislikes because of people who didn't want them to win.

"What is Eurovision? Is it about sending a message in the world? Is it about your singing skills? Is it about giving a performance?" Yes. It's all of this and more. It's not a singing competition, it's a song contest. So think about it as the Olympics but for music. Every country tries their own thing. They may send the catchiest song they have, or the strongest/better singer, or maybe they want to send a message. It's up to every country (there's rules though, they cannot be overly political for example). And we just sit, drink, vote and enjoy.

It's no longer a song competition at all. It's all just too political. A lot of the countries vote for their neighbors no matter what type of sh*t is presented. Also, some countries what give "progressive" performances get votes even though the song was awful. THere are also other political messages and agendas, and way too much weirdness and nudity. It was a family type of show. I remember that every spring our whole family would sit down to watch, and vote, and root for certain songs. etc. Now... it's not something I could call family friendly anymore.

@dieseljr7946 Год назад
The contest was started after WW2 as a way to bring people together, so in a way there has always been somewhat of a political element to it. Also, the full name is the Eurovision SONG contest, so it's not necessarily about having the best singing voice. Different countries do different things every year, they can send cheesy/silly entries or an artist that's a bit of a meme. There can be opera singers, powerful ballad-singers, an artist with a strong message - they can interpret the competition anyway they like (within the rules of course) and I think that's what makes it so great. Sometimes a message will resonate with audiences and help them win (see Jamala - 1944 from 2016). Other times a heavy metal band will win! (See Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi from 2006). It just depends on all the factors of that particular year :)

Same with Turkey and Greece. Or Russia and Ukraine. Or Israel and other countries. Or some Balkan countries between themselves. Other songs with lots of dislikes is because they won and some people didn't like it. Okay, it's really important to note that the ESC is not a singing competition but a SONG competition. It's in the name - Eurovision Song Contest. I feel like most American reactor's are almost solely listening to the voices of the singers, but that is not what the show is about. It's not x-factor or got talent, where the voice is judged for the voice alone. This is about the song, the show, likeability, camera angles, and so many other aspects (including the singing of course), and how all this is transported through the tv-media and to the viewers, but it is not a singing competition. I thus feel it is a huge misunderstanding to judge it like it is just that.

For the record, I quite liked Salvador's Sobral (Portugal)'s entry in 2017, but the style of the song was a nod to the way old Eurovision songs used to sound like, so I guess people didn't like it (even though he won with the highest amount of votes ever). I think there was also some backlash for him not being able to sing during the rehearsals for the show because he was recovering from heart surgery, where his sister (who wrote the song) had to step in. But, yeah, obviously, it's almost impossible to separate the Eurovision from politics. Neighboring countries tend to vote for each other and different genres almost compete against each other without any consideration for what the songs actually sound like; like how a heavy metal band from Finland won one year pretty much just because it was a heavy metal band. It's honestly a mess, but it's a beautiful mess and a tradition that represents what Europe is pretty well, at least according to what I think.

Salvador Sobral that year was different because the rest of the people were too "noisy", like too much dance and that kind of stuff and that one was different, calmed and beautiful, honestly, it was what i needed at that moment, i wanted that one to win, not because of Portugal being next to us (i'm a spaniard) but because i really liked that song and it was in the native language, something important to me. Here's what I can explain so far. The Spaniard at the end cracked his voice on the high note. The German was not supposed to be competing (came second place in their national selection. The winner backed out for personal reasons.) The band from Iceland brought politics into a strictly nonpolitical event (they showed Palestinian flags somewhere during the show). Like the Austrian, the Ukrainian singer also could not be justified by the 5-second clip (she won that year). Her song "1944" was controversial because it was about Russian crimes against Crimean Tatars (her ethnicity) in.. 1944 (which did not count as political despite whatever the Kremlin was up to because this was already part of old recorded history). Was also surprised to see some of the winners here. But I guess the dislikes were bitter fans like what another commenter said.

A bit of backstory on number 22 (Albania, Rona Nishliu with the song Suus). A few days before the final there was a huge accident where a bus (mostly with students) drove off a mountainside, left 12 people dead and the other 21 injured. Since Eurovision is a song contest and the song’s writers and composers are also winning trophies, I’ve always just assumed that the judges on the various national juries look for more technical aspects of song writing and composing as well as marketability (radio friendliness). Based on the songs that have won the jury’s votes alone each year, I think that’s a fair assessment of what they likely are judging on rather than the message, lighting, dancing, effects, etc. The singer or singers performing the song live is part of that technical aspect whereas the lighting, props, stage effects, dancing, etc is probably mostly ignored by the judges when it comes to their scores, same with the message of the song. If you go back and look at the songs that won the contest before the television audience also got to vote, I think it reflects this also (especially in the context of the full competition that year, not in the context of overall winners over the decades). Once the television audience got to vote, there does seem to be a lot more done by the national delegations to also do things they think will appeal to the television audience to get their votes. In general (most not always), the winners of each year’s contest have generally received a decent amount of votes from both the juries and the television audience...though the winners of each individually don’t always align (i.e. the song that gets the most points from the jury and the song that gets the most points from the tv audience aren’t usually the same songs and the winner on average is the song that scored in the top 10 in both; hence why the winning songs might have a higher dislike to like ratio percentage because folks might not be happy the song won over a more popular song by the tv audience. There can also be political reasons the song was disliked or it requires more context in seeing the performance alongside other performances within the same year’s contest to understand or it can be that the song itself was well liked, but there was a mistake or poor part of the live performance, or in some cases it can even go back to the song wasn’t the one many wanted to win a national competition that chooses what that nation sends to Eurovision; basically there’s numerous factors for why the like to dislike ratio is what it is and it isn’t necessarily a reflection on the quality of the song overall in the long term. Context is everything to trying to understand why songs get the dislikes to liked ratios they do and long after the contest the songs’ streaming numbers may not reflect the videos’ dislikes either. It doesn’t mean the songs weren’t popular, the video was just using YT info as it was at the time).

The stage and lighting rig for 2014 (e.g. number 28) was even more ridiculous and impressive in person. Probably my favourite of any Eurovision I’ve been to (although 2015 was also excellent). Something you might not know about Eurovision is that these songs aren’t first heard during the competition week: they’re released and marketed across Europe well in advance. Some countries do it from October-ish. These are heard on the radio and people get familiar with them so it can be jarring when a live performance is bad even if you like the song or the studio performance (even though it’s the song you’re meant to be voting for)

Ok these are here for the following reasons (probably): Politics - sometimes Eurovision countries just hate each other - Armenians and Azerbaijanis are probably downvoting each others videos, some Greek entries get downvoted by Turks and vice versa, also the 2015 Armenian entry was about Turkish genocide of Armenians - it was originally called Don't Deny not only are the Turks still doing that they're probably downvoting the song too, Russia even before Putin got them kicked out were still interfering with Ukraine and actually invaded the Crimea in 2015 - also what really annoyed people is they were sending love, love, peace, peace type entries between 13-15 which many (myself included) found nauseatingly hypocritical to the extent where they were booed at the contest and actually a lot of downvote for 1944 was probably because it was a comment on that Crimea invasion and the Russians and those who don't like politics downvoted it, its probably a factor in a lot of Israeli downvoted entries. Conversilly the Icelandic guys waved a Palestinian flag at the Tel Aviv concert - and some people think they shouldn't have hence sending them a finger. Anti LGBT+ - some people in the world are dickheads about this and will downvote queer themed entries - Austria's winner and the French one. Overated - if a song is a percieved jury fav that got treated overly generously ar the competition over fan favs then it gets hate - both the Aussie entries have that especially the 2017 where the guy had a voice crack in the semis and STILL qualifed in 6th and finished in the top 10. Also if your song was ropier or percieved as such by fans of a song that didn't qualify for the final when you did or did better than they will hate you and downvote in kind. - Letting the side down - sometimes no one hates a country's entry more than those in the nation it represents because they consider it to be really embrassing and downvote accordingly both the Germany and Polish 21 entries consist of comments of Germans and Poles slagging off their own songs, Spain also has this - out of the box - because some stuff is just divisive sonically and the haters like to make their views known - Iceland 2019 and the Israeli winner have that in spades on top of offending people of aforementioned political stuff. - exploitative - Poland's 2015 entry and Russia's 2017 and 18 are loathed in some quarters for milking their singer's diabilities. - sometimes they're just crap - Spain had a vocal crack in his performance and I'm sorry but Germany is that for me.

You asked what eurovision is, is it about a message, singing, performance? It's a song contest, it's about the songs. It's not the voice, it's not a 'singing' competition, but a 'song contest'. A song contest is about the song, a singing competition is about the voice, like 'the voice' show, this song contest is not 'the voice'. The artists on eurovision are not mindless robots who are only allowed to sing in their native languages however much you would prefer that, and they are allowed to sing about important subjects. Ukraine won singing purely about the Crimean occupation, Jamala 1944.

About that german song, from wiki.... The song is also a subject of controversy due to its alleged similarities with other well-known songs such as "Titanium" by David Guetta, to which a possible plagiarism is discussed - That's probably why it has such a high dislike to like ratio.

Interesting list, I don't watch the festival myself. But there was so much writing about Hatari (17) from Iceland that I, who listens to cynth a lot, became curious about them. So I will thank the "scandals" around Eurovision for finding a new favorite band.

You also have to keep in mind that sometimes in Eurovision songs get dislikes if they either sound too generic or too much like last year's winner/ top3.

Me again.. you didn't even pay attention to the results. Some (at least 3) of the Top 10 were the winners, so the dislike percentage is not because the song was bad, but because ppl who had other fave's to win express their disappointment with a dislike. I was the whole time: wait, where is Germany? (my country) But we made it twice in the Top 4. Expected more, since we mostly come dead last. As for your understanding... Songs don't have to be bad bad to have a bad result or like percentage, most of the time a song is disliked, it's because it's boring or cheesy or out of date or bad singing. You only hear snippets. We heard the full song, and some are just out of tune. Thanks for reacting though ;)

What is eurovision? its simple... You just do you, and just hope among the 40 songs and artist doing themselves, you will be the one that appealing to the most of the viewers.. There is no formula or a rule book about how the song and performance should be. one formula can work one year for one country but not for another on another year. there are winners which had songs about love, heartbreak, loss, war... from every aspect of life. A ballat a banger a rock any genre can win. you just need to be one who relates and communicates your own message better than anyone else that year on that stage. the stage is yours for 3 mins. its your platform to say and do whatever you want. not everyone does it for the win. yeah its a competition. but still there have been artist just wanted to say what they want to say even though they knew they are not going to win. Eurovision is an opportunity. you can promote yourself or your country or your political belief or your abilities.

Europe: Let's have many millions of people watch our songs and vote on which are the best. Someone making this list: Yea. And then we are going to look on what thousands of youtube watchers say to decide which are good, right? Europe: Nothing against you man, but the idea behind this list is so stupid. 4 out of the 8 "worst" songs won the competition and millions of people voted for them.

Music is emotion. So if they get point for politics/sympathy or for the music/staging, no one really knows. I feel like it is really sad to see entries like Austrias Conchita, Ukraines Jamala and Armenias Genealogy here. Conchita is a great singer, but yeah a man that can dress like a sickly thin women. Jamalas song was so emotive about how soldiers/politicians destroys civilian lives and Genealogy, they were all armenian singers from all over the world since there was a genocide on armenians by the turks so they fled to all corners of the earth. They sang about how the world has not yet confirmed that it was a genocide that were committed. Maybe that is confirmed nowadays however.

OK, this the Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision is an organization created to raise and standardize the technical and production quality of National Television so there would be compatibility across the Continent. This was necessary as smaller nations could not afford to produce and broadcast in their own language. The competition and its staging is a hugely complex test of production, broadcasting and voting coordination. The actual content is largely irrelevant ( I only really like Classical Music). When Ireland first won the right to Stage the Competition with Dana's 1970 winin Amsterdam, The National Broadcaster, RTE, had to borrow much of the technical equipment from the UKs BBC.

Then you have culture differences. . Whats liked by one culture may be hated by another.and sadly politics comes into voting......sweden will vote for norway and finland......france will vote for belgium...etc etc all the eastern europeans vote for each . other...there really is no telling now why ot who votes for who.....its just a music comp now....each country has their own competition for weeks to find a representative to take part in the big show. .. its a massive event millions are involved

Most of these songs have higher likes than dislikes. Most of these songs were fan favorites of the year. Some of them were the winners of the year. So absolutely you don't need to find reasons to agree with the few who dislike these songs.. Also, with competitions, especially ones in which people spend their own money voting for their favorites they get upset when their favorites don't win, so they go and downvote the one that won.

The Ukranian winning performance was actually stunning (if you watch the whole thing). The lyrics were a stab at Russia so I'm sure it got lots of dislikes from there. Like LOTS. And this was before Russia invaded Ukraine. Armenia and Azerbaijan are in conflict... they will also bombard videos of each other's Eurovision songs with dislikes.

What is it about? Well it’s a competition, but it’s also to connect with eachother, And it’s about a lot of things, you don’t need to send out a message or have the best voice or have the best performance It’s how it’s delivered and if the song and all speaks to you If 9/11 happened and an American singer would compete, they wouldn’t get any extra points, maybe a little, if USA as a country competed and the song was good enough, yeah you can definitely get sympathie votes, but it’s not granted Take Ukrain for example, they won this year, and yes by a landslide because of the war, but it was a song that would have ended up high anyways

Yea, you didn't get the point of the video and the criteria. Everyone has already pointed out the main things - it's a show, a contest, it's not necessarily about the singing but can be (e.g. Sweden 2012 (Loreen), Austria 2010 (Conchita) Netherlands 2019 as winners). What I'm looking for when I vote is something standing out to me - it can be vocals, it can be a theatrical performance, it can be a melody or riff that gets stuck in my head. The Jury has 4 criteria when they judge the songs. Vocals are only one of them. Connection with the audience is another, choreography and staging as well. Positions much more important in this reaction video than the dislike % - they need to be read together to understand the dislikes. Finally, sure, politics can play a role in the voting, but if you look at who won in the past years, aside from Ukraine, I don't think you can say any of them won because of politics. People in Europe have different tastes in the contest, and it shows in voting patterns you see and the winners. Ukraine is the only country who won twice in the past 10 years. Once politics, and the other was a political song, yes, but as it was in Ukrainian, at the time none of us really got that message - the passion in her whole performance won it for her, but it was close - and her vocals were incredible there. I really wanted Australia to win that year (2016) though. Finally, Jedward is a prank in general - they play off that in their messy performances :)
@arturo435

People dislike Jamala because of winning with a political song, which is theoretically against the rules, but her performance is actually pretty good overall and Top 5 deserving for sure. I would've preferred Australia that year, but I wasn't mad. I was mad about Ukraine's win this year because it was just pity votes and why do the freaking show at all?
