I always thought that Harry's American Tourist characters were actually a comparatively gentle piss-take because they're really quite nice well-meaning people. They just have an ignorance of other cultures and an excess of enthusiasm and bonhomie which is utterly alien to us Brits.

Harry Enfield as Ronald, Alice Lowe as Pam, Paul Whitehouse as the dad and Simon Day as the cafe owner. Paul wrote for Harry initially (for the characters Loadsamoney and Stavros) and then co-starred in Harry's 90s BBC series ("Harry Enfield's Television Programme" and "Harry Enfield & Chums"). Paul then starred in The Fast Show (with Simon Day and others) before re-uniting with Harry for "Harry and Paul" (originally "Ruddy Hell! It's Harry and Paul").

Yes Harry and Paul did great sketches. I worked in a cafe in Edinburgh Scotland about 25 yrs back and and American couple came in. They were about the same age as these, she had a bit of a beehive hair do and he looked exactly like this Harry Enfield character. They were both over the top polite, and as with many of our American cousins their speaking volume was way up to eleven. As they stood at the counter she asked “Excuse me, what is the soup today ?” .I cast my arm behind me at the board and read out to them that it was beetroot. They looked at each other puzzled and asked in unison “What is that ?”. I went to the back kitchen and brought out a beetroot and showed it to them, they looked and shouted in unison “OOHHH ROOTBEAT”. Which I found quite funny. They said they would leave it today and may come back tomorrow. As they were going I said “Yes, tomorrow it might be nipturn”, but I think that was lost on them. The whole thing was hilarious, and what was puzzling is my boss, the owner of the cafe (she was not in that day) who is herself an American, had never heard of `rootbeat` either.

Some years ago I was on holiday in Devon, which is in the 'West Country' part of Britain - it's a beautiful area and hence always popular with tourists. My wife and I went into a nice quiet cafe for afternoon 'cream' tea, which includes scones with jam and clotted cream. Suddenly in came an elderly American couple just like these two - I've never seen two people so excited. They sat down and proceeded to loudly 'gush' about afternoon tea - "Oh my God, I can't believe whe're in Devon, eating REAL DEVONSHIRE CLOTTED CREAM!" said the lady, and so it went on until we left. For me, ever since I first saw these American tourist sketches, it brings back memories of those two.

@King Boomer, we use the word twat here both as a noun and as a verb. E.g. we can twat somebody for being a twat which translates into English as we can hit someone very hard for acting like a lady's front bottom. Is that enough of being in the English-speaking world for you to be going along with? Never mind them talking, singing and dancing about supporting paedos it sounds very kinky to me that both of you would unashamedly admit to being in Grease - so is that the musical or the lubricant? Boomer. We love American folks. You need to understand that the British sense of humour takes the P out of everyone and anything. Including ourselves. It’s all just humour. If you can make folk laugh you have done your job.

Harry Enfield is a classic from back in our Friday night live. he is probably best known for his Kevin and perry skits (also a movie). Another good duo is Armstrong and miller. my particular fav is the world war 2 pilots..Link Below ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r_b1Y-Rl_Uo.html

Or 'sketches' as we say in the UK, rather than 'skits'. Skits has an entirely different meaning here. :)

Equally, it's a justified piss take of Britains disservice , and lack of consideration too.

There is an unwritten rule with us British, if we make fun of you, we actually really like you. The enthusiasm and joy of the American couple on ordering breakfast is counterbalanced by our complete and utter disregard and contempt for service that rivals the French. The pi55 take of the American football teams is twofold, firstly we can’t get our heads around how you name your teams and secondly how you assume that football in the rest of the world is American football. Other than that, we love you.

I think I would prefer Americans like that to the image of the drunk, anti-social, fighting British abroad.
@krashd
@krashd 2 года назад
British tourists are not like that in general though, thankfully the anti-social mobs abroad are always either football 'fans' or young folks on sex holidays in places like Ibiza, Poland and Thailand. If you avoid cities hosting major football events or sleazy party locations for the 18-30's then you will likely never meet an anti-social Brit abroad.

Some years ago I was with a girl in a row boat on the Avon at Stratford, when some twat in another boat nearly collided with me, I can still picture him, skinny, a big glasses, a hideous perm and teeth like Champion the Wonder Horse. He was about 20 years old and was this "type" of American. Think 80s version of Eugene from Grease. I made some jokey sort of comment as we nearly hit each other, can't remember what I said but I remember his opening and one and only line, "Hi, I'm from Los Angeles and we just held the Olympics". It was one of those occasions that I responded perfectly..."Yeah, I'm from Birmingham and I've just held her tits"...I said as a gestured to the girl in the boat with me. At that a rowed off leaving Ned Flanders in silence, the girl with me giggling and me feeling very pleased with myself.

I've met Americans like that, who like to introduce themselves with a piece of random trivia. I remember when I was about 14 and sitting in a train station in Glasgow in the 90's some kid about my age who was sitting opposite came and sat next to me and said "Hey! I'm American, my dad and I are hunting around Europe, that's him over there - he's listening to Korn on his headphones." I had a decent chat with him for ten minutes until one of us caught our train but I'll always remember how friendly and upbeat he was, I can't recall if I had met any Americans before turning 14 but I do remember thinking to myself "So the kids in American movies really are excited about everything." 😁

I'm from the uk and I've been to America 5 times, and I've found most Americans to be friendly and generous. Having said that I have been asked some really daft questions, including that old chestnut 'do you know the Queen '. Quite poignant considering the sad news this week regarding her majesty.
