Watch stuff and learn and chill hi whatsup ⚔️👋🧐
Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through RU-vid videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!
Having a diverse perspective is crucial to what I want to achieve here so please don't hold back! I want to learn about all I can! Keep recommending and PLEAESE join my Discord :) ( / discord )

You perhaps had to see the actual Question Time to fully appreciate the parody which is unlikely for the rest of the world so don't feel bad about the details.

The jokes about Cambridge "ring road" University and University of "tired" Sheffield aren't laugh out loud moments but just thought I'd explain, I believe it's just a dig at what has happened since our tuition fees in this country went up, a lot of "polytechnics" (which used to be schools that awarded different types of higher qualifications but without the power to award even higher qualifications like degrees) were usually set in buildings ugly and without character, but they've now all got into the proper university game because of the money to be made (they're everywhere now) and those places are often the buildings where Thursday night Question Time is filmed. The way the politicians are portrayed is spot on as well which is why I haven't watched it in years, it's usually the Tory laughing everything off and Labour spending the entire time criticising the Tories without saying what they intend to do if they get into power. Unless there's an election coming up it does feel like you've wasted an hour watching it.

Mmmm no, not really sure about your reasoning there. There does seem to be a general misunderstanding amongst the UK general public that a Poly education was in some way inferior to that from a "proper" Uni and that persists today. But Polytechnics did not change their name to Universities in order to award degrees and to make money. The actual timeline doesn't fit that assumption. I studied at a Polytechnic back in the late 1970's. The Poly / Uni difference was not that you had to go to Uni to get a degree. I got a degree. The difference was the types of courses. Polys tended to specialise in applied skills teaching, eg engineering, business and my own degree - Computer Science. Several of my friends there were doing Geography so that tendency to specialise in engineering etc was by no means 100% I got my degree many years before the name change - my Poly became a Uni, as did many others, under the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act. When I was interviewing for jobs at the end of my final year, most firms knew the excellent reputation of the Computer Science Dept at my Poly and didn't give a damn about the Poly/Uni distinction. In addition, tuition fees didnt come in until much later (1998). So the supposition that the name change was tuition fee related doesn't really hold water either. Finally, our buildings weren't ugly by any means, but I know several Polys that were, so that joke does hit home I guess. 😃

Let that laugh out on camera. The Brits are very good at laughing at the stereotypes portrayed of different aspects of our society.

Nobody watches Question Time. It’s broadcast on Thursdays at 10.45pm (the graveyard slot) & it’s full of nonsense like this. BBC should bin it. The parody is spot on. “Next week’s panel guests are The Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Chairman of BP & Dappy from N-Dubz.” Hilarious!
