A lovely touch for me is when they all run after the ball at the same time; just like 10 year olds do in the playground

Historically it used to be played that way. There’s a film, called, I think the English game which is a story of its evolution.

The work involved in the sketch is amazing. Costuming, editing, all the stunts, the use of archive. And at a deeper level the "spectacle" of football in the early 90s is clearly prefigured in its 1930s precursor. Rather like Stanley Baxter it must have caused a headache to TV executives at the time over its budget but it is exquisite comedy that looks good even today.

They got the nuances of old film coverage of such events spot on. The way in which the speed of the 1930's players moved in a faster than normal way, and Charles, 'Charley', Charles look to the camera holding his pipe in his mouth and giving a satisfactory thumbs up, as he's talking could easily have been taken from any number of old sports coverage films from the 1930's. The fact they were playing a team from the 90's was an interesting idea that showed how football has changed quite significantly over the years. The part where the entire team is chasing the ball is very reminiscent of how I remember playing the game aged about 7. Passing the ball wasn't something we even considered, back then.

One of the funniest aspects is that the player who lights up and bends his knees is doing the classic policeman mime of the time, he then goes on to punch Finney, kisses one his teammates and then tries to take off the shorts of his opposite number. Probably didn't go down well at Scotland Yard thirty years ago!
