Did you know that one of the English Kings was Dutch? One of the reasons they have the Orange parades in Northern Ireland is because of him. You might find it interesting. If he'd had children, the royal house in the UK would have been Dutch. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_III_of_England

During the late Middle ages, the various duchies and counties of the Low Countries were ruled by the dukes of Burgundy. One of them, Charles the Bold, died in battle before producing a male heir. He only had a daughter, Maria. She married Maximillian II of Habsburg and Holy Roman Emperor. They had a son named Filip the Handsome, who married a daughter of the king of Spain. Their firstborn son was none other than emperor Charles V, who also became king of Spain through his mother's lineage. For political reasons, Charles created the 17 United Provinces as a separate administrative unit apart from the rest of the Holy Roman Empire and his other kingshios in Spain and Italy. He was born in Ghent and got along well with the Dutch high nobility such as William of Orange and relied on them as advisors in the Council of State. He had to abdicate in 1555 as Holy Roman Emperor after being defeated by the Duke of Saxony. His son Philip II inherited his kingships in Spain and Italy and Philip also became Lord of the 17 united provinces. Philip had been raised in Spain and did not trust the Dutch nobility. And that's when the troubles with Spain started.

Michiel stopped the barbary slave trade. That was the slave trade of the Pasjas of north Africa on the west European coast. Aprox 1.5 million white slaves were made during the period, up till denmark. It was at the same time we ruled the seas, but the powerfull fleet couldnt be everywhere the little barbary ships went, so eventually they were so fed up, Michiel got the order to sail there with the fleet and threaten them to gave up that practice, or they would flatten their coastal cities. Where the text East Frisia is, is actually Germany. The border between Netherlands and Germany on the upper half of the Netherlands isn't changed much since then. And those star-shaped fortresses you mentioned earlier in the video were a common thing. Each star-point is called a bastion and that's where mostly cannons or some other type of heavy artillery were placed or it functioned as an observation post. If you check some city/town maps of city/towns that existed back then you can still see some remnants of that.

Your pronunciation of "Michiel" is spot on. The VOC *was* a private company but interestingly also had carte blanche to wage war on behalf of the Dutch Republic. Barbary pirates were not from Barbados, though, but from Northern Africa, now Morocco and Algeria. The native people there were berbers. This is also where the word barbarian comes from. Frysian language was spoken all along the North Sea coast all the way up to Denmark. The English crown ship captured during the Medway raid was taken back to Amsterdam as a trophee and exhibited in the national museum up until fairly recently. I think we gave it back a few years ago because we're all friends now.

Not entirely. The ship was too big to be useful for the shallow Dutch waters and was scrapped not long after. The stern piece was kept and is in the national museum. It was temporary given to the UK in 2012 but returned tot the Netherlands.

@@Jari-95 During the 80 year old war some Dutch captains were authorized to raid the Spanish and Portugese ships. The captains carried a raiding letter (kapersbrief). The capture off the Spanish silver fleet was by such raiders. It was very lucrative. When there was peace such in the 12 year treaty those captains couldn't raid anymore. The changed their profession to pirates which wasn't that different (only illegal) and found safe havens in North Africa where there wasn't much centralized authority and already Barbary pirates. The Dutch helped them also by improving their ships. Some Dutch pirates converted to Islam. I had a professor who was doing research to descandants off those pirates in Salle, Morocco a former pirate city.

A few times a week I will pass his statue here on the boulevard in Vlissingen where he overlooks the River Scheldt. By the way a part of New York is called after our town Vlissingen ,Flushing Meadow. The barbary pirates, big slavetraders also.. where mainly from Algeria, but recruiting from the whole of Northern Africa, the Mediterenean and even significant numbers of Northern Europeans joined them or worked together with them. Marocco used to be a penal colony for example in Roman times, the Romans used to send their biggest thugs there, later the Germic Vandals tribe colonized it, later it was the home base of the first wave of islamic conquerers also.. and originally it's the home region of the Berber tribes, or the Amazigh as they call themselves (free people).

Barbary pirates were located not in Barbados, but in Algeria. The history of Frisia is complicated. East Frisia is located in Germany. Frisia is (now) located in the Netherlands, west of Groningen and east of North Holland. The people living in the north of North Holland are called "West Frisians" (because of historical reasons). But the Germans call the Frisians in Frisia "West Frisians". As for the Navy, the Dutch republic had a navy, the VOC had ships that could carry goods and fight at the same time (but not as good). The Dutch republic requisistioned ships from the VOC (and WIC) to fight their battles.

the VOC had 2 branches , the official well known trading branch but without their 2e militairy branch this would not have bin posible. This 2e branch was more like a private army then it was officialy a part of the Navy. Europe at that time was a powdercake. For example for decades the Netherlands were off and on at war with the Spanish , the Portugese and the English. Loyalties at that time switched so fast and often that its hard to fully explain, at certain times we even fought on Portugese side against the Spanish. de Ruyter, sailed as a boatsman on Whaler ships after that he became captain on a Merchant ship mainly bound for the West Indies. After making a name for himself he joined the official Navy in 1641 when the Dutch sided with the Portugese against Spain. in 1643 he sailed on a Trader , mainly bound for the Northern part of Africa and the West Indies. When the first English war started in 1652 he rejoined the Navy , where he rose through the ranks to finaly become the heroic Admiral we now know. p.s. Frisia was a fast independed country long before all this. documented as early as the 6th century BC .. in itself a realy interresting topic. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frisia

10:50 The Barbary pirates were not linked to Barbados, but were North African pirates operating from the coast of nowadays Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. The name is a bastardisation from "Berber", an ethnic group spread along that coast. Fun fact: when you hear the US Marines' hymn mention "From the Halls of Montezuma, to the Shores of Tripoli", the name Tripoli refers to the US' First Barbary War (1801-1805) against the Barbary Pirate states and in particularly the attempts of US Marines to capture the Libyan city of Tripoli.

Friesland used to stretch all the way from North Holland up to Denmark. Centuries before the middle ages at least, the Frisians kept the Romans from crossing the Rhine. Though much like the teutons from Germany, they were more like tribes folk and less of a cohesive nation, republic or empire. So it makes sense with the rise of feudal cultures and kingdoms the region fell under different rule with each partition growing more of their own identity. (Groningers like to be their own folk, even if they are descendants of Frisians. And they can be, they have become different enough from Frisians and East Frisians (Germany) to consider themselves not Frisians) Regardless, anyone who can speak a decent word in Frisian or Danish should be able to converse with any native around the Wadden coast.

He was set up bij prince william the 3rd. His last battle they did not give him his own beloved ship the 7 provinces but but just a handful of small ships against a much larger French fleet. It's told that he knew he wasn't coming back alive from this battle. He was set up just like the brothers de wit. Who where killed during a uprising prior to this final battle. The movie the admiral is aboute him.

VOC, not VLC. VOC stood for Verenigde Oost Indische Companie (Dutch East India Company) and De Ruyter never had any involvment in that. The East Indies were one of the very few areas on the globe where he didn't fight! Other than that, as a commander and fleet Admiral, he fought EVERYWHERE, in the eastern and western Mediterranean, off the North African coast (destroying Barbary pirate bases), on the North Atlantic, in the Caribbean, in the North Sea and in Scandinavian waters, supporting the Danes against the Swedes). He commanded the legendary Dutch attack ("Raid on the Medway") on the British Navy base far up the Thames, an unbelievable feat of navigation He destroyed British fortifications and most of the British fleet, captured the British flag ship ("Royal George") and towed it back to Holland. The Dutch didn't actually have any use for it and scrapped the ship, but its stern ornaments are still hanging in a Dutch museum to this day. De Ruyter is said to never have lost a battle in his entire career as a naval commander, and finally got mortally wounded in a battle against a combined French-Spanish fleet near Syracuse. When the Dutch fleet sailed past to take their dead admiral's body home, the entire French fleet lined up in honour of the great admiral. On the way home, batteries all along the French coast fired their cannons, saluting De Ruyter as the Dutch fleet sailed north. To this day, the Dutch call De Ruyter "Bestevaer", a title he was given by his crews, meaning something like "beloved father". It might be worth noting, too, that the Dutch "Raid on the Medway" was the very last time that a foreign military force set foot on British soil! The Dutch Marine Corps, incidentally, is the second oldest marine corps in the world, founded just a year after the British Marine Corps.

My Great great great grandfather was buried in the Old Church, Amsterdam, the heart of the nowadays Red District. He never worked for the V.O.C. but for the Marines. He was not a warrior but the head of the carpenters who built the ships for the "Dutch Defence" We were a rogue nation who wanted to rule the world. As the English and the Portuguese (earlier) wanted to rule. We were the worst usurpators battling the other competitors. We burned the crops of the island Ternate in the nowadays Indonesia just to pester (and take over from) the Portuguese. I'm not proud of the fact nor do I feel guilty of what my ancestors did. I can deplore what happened in history. But History Is Not Me! Well I'm part of it but I can reject the politics connected to it. Can't I ?

As a reaction to your comments about being afraid to fall in love again when two of his wives died. I believe that most of the marriages were strategic rather than for love. A way to gain wealth and power. Also you keep saying VLC and it is VOC. The early sailors and tradesmen were very dangerous and battled to ensure trading for the wealthy families in Netherlands. So complicated ..this history of the Netherlands.

80 years war was about freedom of everything, but the most religion. Protestants were haunted by the Spanish (Spanish Inquisition) and we were sick of it. After we became independent we first took revenge on the Catholics, after that we became the country were everybody could be himself. Your own pilgrim fathers fled from England because of their religion, they came to Leiden, after a few years they decided to leave for America because they considered the Netherlands to liberal in their religion and that this would effect their children, talk about brainwashing 😏. The rest is history. In the centuries after the 80 years war The Netherlands were a save haven for people of every religion, it’s still in our veins, don’t try to rule by religion, we have of course a lot of religious uses, in our daily life but also in laws, although this is getting less and less. Our King is institutionalized with the words “Zo helpe mij God” (with the help of God) which is strange in a country were the majority doesn’t have a religion. (But also a majority believes in something of a higher spirit. It’s complicated but it works. ( of course there are exceptions in were cities are ruled by a chosen religious party).
