Red Dwarf is a cult classic and my favourite series! **Spolier Alert** The characters are as follows: Rimmer, Arnold J. - 2nd Technician, killed in a radiation accident, now resurected as a hologram (hence, the 'H') Lister, David - the last human alive, originally put into suspended animation for an illegal pet cat 'Cat' - a creature which evolved from the cat Lister brought aboard Red Dwarf Kryten - a sanitation Mechanoid @KingBoomer Please begin this show from the beginning 😁👍🏻
One of the best British comedy series ever. The genius is only really appreciated with knowing the characters and the whole story, and it's a long story.
"Sir, are you _absolutely_ sure? It _does_ mean changing the bulb" may actually be my single favourite joke in all of Red Dwarf, and Red Dwarf was a very long-running series.
The space corps directive jokes were one of the best pieces of comedy writing from Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, as when you heard space corps directive, you knew there was a big gag coming.
As a Welshman I can confirm every Welsh person is proud of being so, we love our heritage, our flag (I mean who wouldn’t like their national flag to be a dragon!) and especially our national anthem. King Boomer I would recommend watching the Welsh national anthem when Wales faced off against England in Rugby on 16th March 2013 - the passion in that video speaks for itself. I think for that reason we don’t mind having some fun poked at us 😊 all the UK nations poke fun at each other but we mean it in good spirits
You can't have heard the radio phone-in where several Welsh people argued that Snowdon should stay Snowdon instead of Yr Wyddfa because "that's how it's always been called". Seemed a distinct lack of pride in their language there, even when the hosts pointed out it's not always been called that, and Snowdon is the English name. Now, I'm English living in Scotland, so I should support the English name, but those people were wrong. It should have its original name, even if it's harder to pronounce.
@@smelge we have a bit of a conundrum here my friend - as well as me knowing that every Welshman & Welshwoman is a patriot, you also know every radio phone in that I’ve ever heard - that’s the only way that you could confirm that I never heard about the small number of people that complained about the name change…😮 what are the odds! Are you in MI6? LoL Yeah I do know that a very small number of Welsh people were against the name change and yes an even smaller number ended up on the radio to say so. I meant in my experience in my 36 years on this planet being born and bread in Wales, every fellow country man and woman I’ve every spoken to, in that time has never ever expressed any emotion other than love for their country - so my apologies and I hope this clarifies my comment 👍🏻 For my education - exactly how many complaints against changing the name to Yr Wyddfa were there? And could you kindly provide me the website link with the figures?
As an English, whilst we do all poke fun at each other, the Scots and Welsh have a cheat code when it goes too far...."Imperial scum...." we legally have to go and sit in a corner and think about what we did 🤦♂️🤣
@@Pilot.0101 😂😂 yeah very much the same if a small group of Welsh, Scots or Irish are visiting a pub in England during a sporting match - if the visitors are getting too rambunctious we have to sit in the corner and think about what we’ve said/done 😂 - again all in good spirits though 😊
The "H" on the forehead means he's a hologram. In the red dwarf universe it is possible and kind of common for a deceased person to be brought back as a hologram with the personality and all the memories they had before death. Later Rimmer gets upgradded to "Hard Light" which means he can phisicly interact with objects and people, which he couldnt before, basicly like a movie projection, things coild pass right through.
It's sort of the premise of the entire show too. Lister is meant to be the only known human left, 3 million years in the future. Rimmer is a Hologram, Cat is evolved from Listers pet cat and Kryton is a mechanoid. Great show and it's well worth watching the first series to get an understanding of it.
Whilst the earlier seasons look a bit dated in terms of sets and special effects, the comedy is spot on and well worth a watch. They are still making this show, although there are quite long periods between seasons these days as it relies on the main 4 cast members' availability. Just shows you how much fun they have making the series!
Red Dwarf is a great series and there is quite a lot of content there for you with reactions. There are 6 episodes per series and in the first 2 they are just finding their feet but from when Kryton (the mechanoid) joins the crew permanently it gets funnier and funnier.
Love this show - had 2 friends who were in Series 1 and it is a cult classic .... they are all dead Dave, Smeg Head and Dwayne Dibley. The set is small because they have lost their space ship and are on the little Star Bug ship. Worth watching once you've finished Father Ted also watch a watch is The Brittas Empire.
This is my favourite sit com from my childhood. Likely influenced by nostalgia, but if you give it a good go and get into it from the start you'll like it. It's very witty and unique, looking forward to you getting into it from episode 1.
@@rwlynch3468is that the one about "To preserve morale during long-haul missions, all male officers above the rank of First Technician must, during panto season, be ready to put on a dress and a pair of false breasts"?
Fave story is DJJ turned up for his audition to be the Cat an hour late (he did not know this) wearing a relatives old Zoot Suit and was totally unapologetic (of course did not know they had been waiting) the people casting thought he was already being in character as the DNGAF Cat and pretty much hired him on the spot. Still not sure where he got that accent from? Craig Charles was initially brought in to look at the cat character and check it was PC as they did not want any allegations of racism (very progressive for 1988) but saw the Dave Lister character and instantly knew it fitted him like a glove. So two Manc writers hired a scouser to be the last human in the galaxy!
As per standard with the majority of Brit and Irish comedies, Red Dwarf starts off slow and with a low budget (until Season 2). The positive is that there's only 6 episodes of Season 1 to get through before the good stuff, and to be fair Season 1 still has some very funny moments. The American RU-vidr, Josh from 'After Work Reactions' recently reacted to the entire thing, and he's now a bonafide fan. Getting through early episodes of Brit sitcoms can be a bit of a chore, but they do pay off alot of the time.
So did anyone have to explain to Josh, what an American youngster asked the cast at their convention? "What does smeg mean?"..Dave just slid off his chair.....
Personally, I think season 1 is great, although the show probably peaks around seasons 3-5, goes right downhill for season 8 and the miniseries and then picked up again for the later episodes on Dave (not sure that I've seen all of those ones).
Love the fact I corrected this response with education showing how I was correct using the word brit in that context only to have a mod delete it but leave the other guys response making me look silly. Thanks mod. I will try again. The United Kingdom is made up from Scotland n Ireland England and Wales. In the UK we say Irish Scottish Welsh and british so saying brit is not wrong. No doubt this will also dissappear. If you are going to delete my defense soaked response at least have the curtsy to also delete the Berated comment also.
@@rossshepherd9836 Americans tend to refer to an English accent as a British accent, I think this is where it comes from. The term British could also be separated away from the United Kingdom as Britain is the island not the political entity, anyone on the island is British though the end of the political union has probably at best hastened this dissolution of the Act of Union and at worst caused it. Personally this Sassenach says "please get on with it Sweaties, chop chop, I'm too old to be waiting 20 years to get my EU passport back, my father was Scottish".
Red Dwarf is definitely worth checking out. Seasons 1 and 2 are slow by today's standards but worth checking out for the lore (and some great jokes). Season 3 is where the show really kicks off. There really isn't an unfunny episode.
Season 1 Episode 1 still cracks me up to this day. One of the only shows I can watch over and over and crease laughing. Lister smoking a cigarette on Duty with Rimmer, Rimmer: "Is that a cigarette youre smoking Lister?!" Lister: (pauses and looks confused) "No.... Its a chicken...." Its like the 5th line in the pilot, 30 years later it still cracks me up every time.
The opening conversation to Series 3 Episode 1 "Backwards" has one of the best punchlines I've ever heard. It cracks me up every time and never more so than when watching it with someone who has never seen it before. Just a conversation between Cat and Lister about The Flintstones.
I have been a fan of this show for decades - so happy to see you reacting to it. It does a brilliant job of coming up with legitimately solid science fiction concepts and making them funny. Give the 'What A Guy!' clip from Red Dwarf a watch - such a brilliant sequence!
The Space Corps Directives running gag is one of my favourites. Mainly because the ones Rimmer mistakenly cites are really bizarre "what the hell happened that they needed to make a rule about that?", and the ones he means are often just one number or sub-section away and completely unrelated.
Red Dwarf is really imaginative as well as funny. Each standalone episode features a really interesting Star Trek style phenomenon or spacetime dilemma. Season 1, Episode 1 is "The End", Episode 6 "The Beginning" that should clue you in a bit. There's time loops, an adaptive moon that terraform based on your mood, a virus that gives you luck... Always an interesting premise with lots of room for fun in it. The crew are always railing on each other as they contrast so much as you've seen here. Great character chemistry, great set ups and settings. Just look at the comments here. People gushing over this and rightly so!
H is for Hologram. Rimmer is a hologram brought back by the ships computer, Holly, to keep Lister sane. Rimmer was the person Lister spent the most time with before "gazpacho soup" was shouted whilst Lister was in Stasis
I still cant help but chuckle along at the boys from the Dwarf, despite knowing what lines they are going to say before they say them from multiple viewings. This particular scene I remember well as my friends and I would constantly recite the "it does mean changing the bulb" line at school for weeks after broadcast. Along with "so what is it? Its a white hole!" and "who would employ this man? Only a yoghurt" Classic comedy, never smegging fails. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Fun fact, I am currently working my way through Red Dwarf from the start. I am currently on season 12 (theres 13) Anyways, I just watched an episode where I noticed James Buckley plays a mechanoid (similar to Kryton in this clip) called Rusty in the show. It was just the voice and I am like whos that. Looked it up and it was him.
Love Red Dwarf and the theme tune is an amazing earworm. One that most of my generation instantly know just from hearing the first line. “Its cold outside....”
Marooned, gunmen of the apocalypse and better than life are some of the best individual episodes. Watching from the beginning is always a good way to start as well as alot of the comedy is based on knowing the characters
The one downside to Red Dwarf is when I hear the credits, I think it's my bed-time because I have "school tomorrow" (I'm now 37). Incidentally the end of Poirot makes me feel the same thing 😅
This ran for TWELVE series (or was it thirteen) plus a couple of 'specials'. It was and still is one of the most loved comedy shows ever in the UK. But if you're going to watch it, start at the beginning because like Dr Who before it, it matured over time. I know every episode of every series almost word-for-word and I still chuckle to myself simply at a random memory popping into my head. Oh, and BTW, I have a 'Blue Alert' sign I made (complete with changeable bulb) in my workshop to let me know when equipment is 'live'.
didnt they do a movie,no i think it was like a 2 hour special or somthin, the most recent. i nearly bought listers guitar from a props company it was the acoustic blue grey one he actually used. wish i had bought it now.
@@allanallen1835 Yes they recently did a movie. Fairly low budget of course. Lister had a few different guitars through the series. He originally had an acoustic I think that somehow was an 'authentic Les Paul copy'. 🤣
Really it ran for 11 series, there is no series 9, back to earth is the special between 8 and 10 (people call it series 9 but it’s really not) and then after series 12 is the feature length special - the promised land
Red Dwarf has the best bloopers video for every season too. Craig Charles also did, (or maybe even still does), a bit of DJ-ing. I've been on several nights out where he was the DJ. He has a crowd-pleaser personality so it makes sense really.
Get the audio books. They are read by Chris Barrie - Rimmer in the show. (The one with the "H"). "Better Than Life" and "Backwards" are excellent books.
Truly one of the best tv shows ever made it’s an almost perfect sitcom as the situation limits the cast (at least for the first few seasons) to just the four main protagonists (three for the first series).
This is a cult classic in the Scy-fy world and in general. The first season is a little slow , getting to know the characters and Lister's scouse accent, but after that it gets sillier and more hilarious as the seasons go on......There will be a audience for it as a reaction I think and if you can get into it , you will luv it.
Arnold Rimmer ( the one with the ‘H’ on his forehead) is a hologram of a dead crewman. The one in the pink Jacket is cat. He evolved from the ships cat over 3 million years. Kryton is a domestic android designed to generally for cleaning duties and Lister is the only surviving human on the mining ship Red dwarf after a catastrophic accident 3 million years before which wiped out the entire crew. Lister was in the prison in suspended animation for violation of some law (which I can’t remember now ). So they’re the only crew of Red dwarf now.
Lister's offence was to bring on board a female cat and conceal it in, I believe, one of the cargo holds. The cat appears to have been pregnant ergo 'Cat'.
Darren Charge i thought the channel Dave was named from the Qi episode where Alan Davis talks about his mate Dave who says everything twice says everything twice. Alan Davis: "we call him Dave ja vu". Dave used to be repeats (including Qi) and other channels back cataloge. It also reason why Dave +1 called Dave ja vu
The H is for Holgram as he is the representation of a long dead crewmate. One is an android and the other is a descendant of the ships cat. Note the teeth. Lister is the only surviving human from a disaster 100's/1000's of years ago.
Red Dwarf is a British rabbit hole, and you will happily lose hours, days and so on if you start to watch it. I love it. I heard that the Star Trek lawyers initially started to sue them for it, which would have killed the start of it. The producers then showed them some of the shows, and they completely backed down.
You should watch full episodes of Red Dwarf from the beginning so you get to know the characters personalities, absolutely legendary show here. Elite tier. As for the Welsh as with everyone in the UK and Ireland if you can’t take a joke you won’t last long in life, we take the piss out of new people we meet as a measure of character. If they laugh it off and give it back they’re sound and there’s good friend potential there.
Being Welsh and a fan of this show I love it when they take the piss out of us. I would like to see your reaction to "Barry Welsh Is Coming". True Welsh Comedy. As for Red Dwarf clips to watch there are far two many. Watch them all. Get the DVD set
Back in the 2000s the Seattle PBS station would use Red Dwarf as their fund raising drive. So long as people kept giving they would keep playing Red Dwarf episodes.
The show is an absolute classic. This is early in season 6, and had a lot of big changes -the “Space Corps Directive” joke was a new running joke. The H indicates that the character, Rimmer, is a hologram of a dead crew member. Specifically, in this case, an obnoxious, self-important, officer wannabe who was Lister’s former bunk mate.
This was and is the most quotable British TV show along side black adder , I have been a fan of this show since it first aired In the 80s , I remember staying up to watch the show and getting caught by my mum when I was 8 years old ,I will turn 43 in a few days, so I guess I'm a life long fan.
Yeah I understand mumpet term of endearment!! And now I love it!! When I first watched I was unsure if you was taking piss of us...but I understand now!! Love it! Love you and the queen and channel! You really make me smile!! Thankyou!! Loving the mupetism!!
It's 1 of my all time favourite shows, started watching it as a kid in the 80's. It's low budget but so well written that the effects just add to the charm.
A sanitation robot (that can not tell a lie), the hologram of dead crew member (the cowardly H guy), a descendent of the ships cat (fixated on style over substance) and the last surviving human (not the best example of the species). Oh, and a rather laid back ships computer Holly, what a combination. An iconic UK comedy which i grew up with, re-watched many times, love it.
Red Dwarf is one of my favourite series. You need to watch from the start so you know the characters to get the full experience. I remember watching the first episode way back in the 1980s and it making me laugh out loud! My three, now grown up children still quote lines from it!!
Tank Tops: In the UK when people speak of tank tops they usually mean WOOLEN tank tops that golfers wear but are considered deeply unfashionable by everyone else, as opposed to the skimpy sleeveless tops girls wear. It's normally clear from the context which is meant.
The fact that you enjoyed an out of context clip from the show, which I think is from season 6 where the crew dynamic has been well established I can see you really enjoying this series. Its one of my favourite TV shows of all time, and now I got to rewatch all over again.
Red Dwarf is a classic. You really need to see the 1st episode it explains a lot and introduces all but the android, he joined the cast in later seasons. Also Lister is the last human in the universe. The actor Rimmer played the butler in Angelina Jolie's Lara Croft movies. He also was the title character in a series The Brittas Empire was made while they were still making Red Dwarf.
Red Dwarf is one of the best sit com in T.V. history .Look up on you tube Patrick Stewarts reaction when he first saw it on television . It was shot in front of a live audience and there are some great programmes about its history and bloopers. in space no one can hear you smeg .That was a poster my daughter had on her wall.
To provide background: The H on Rimmer's head is because he's a hologram of Lister's former roommate and senior officer (who is a total Smeg Head) Lister is the last human alive, having been in stasis for over 3 million years following a radiation leak (caused by Rimmer) The Cat is a being who evolved out of the offspring over millennia of Listers pet cat that was sealed the cargo hold during the leak Kryten is a domestic cleaning android/robot who the crew rescued in S2 and became full cast in S3 played by a different actor Patrick Stewart once saw an episode (Gun men of the Apocalypse) in a hotel room, and originally thought it was a rip off of Star Trek (specifically the episode A Fistful Of Data's), was about to call his lawyer only to notice he was finding it funny and subsequently became a fan of the show - even hosting a "Red Dwarf Appreciation Night" on the BBC.
I loved this series growing up and still do,the characters and story lines are so well written and funny and the space elrment made it stand out from other sit coms. Brilliant.True classic❤️❤️🇬🇧👍x
My favourite 4 episodes. 'Quarantine' is worth a watch for Mr. Flibble alone. 'White Hole' for the opening convo between Kryten, Lister and 'Talkie Toaster'. 'Blue', for one of the most disturbing musical numbers of the show's history. 'Polymorph'. Great throughout. But most of all, 'Quarantine'. Mr Flibble will be happy if you do, angry if you don't. 😉 Do not upset Mr Flibble. 😉
The episode "backwards" is my favourite. It is from Red dwarf Series 3 where they land on a planet where everything happens in reverse. the ending will make you fall out of your seat in laughter.
Fun Fact: This show is so beloved in England that a TV station was named in it's honour. DAVE - which is a free to air channel was named after Dave Lister (played by Craig Charles).
H - hologram. Rimmer is dead, the computer decided that Lister needed someone to talk too, keeping him sane as he is the only crew member to survive. Kat is a weird mutation the computer doesn't think is intelligent and they found kryton on a derelict ship And that was some mad foreshadowing for Ace Rimmer at the end there. Also Netflix is dropping this show and nine seasons is a lot to binge.
Hi KB, this is one of the shows I`m glad I decided to give a chance when it was first broadcast. As I went on to watch it regularly from the 1st episode. I`m sure you would enjoy it as well. :)
The clip cutoff before you got the really funny punchline. Rimmer asks to change from Blue Alert to Red Alert as the situation worsens. This is responded to by the mechanoid Kryten saying, "Sir are you quite sure? That would mean changing the bulb."
'H' stands for hologram, he died in the first episode. Lister is the only human survivor, Cat is an evolved descendant of Listers cat and Kryten is a cyborg they found. The episode when they find him he was played by a different actor. Red Dwarf is one of the greatest shows ever made, some absolute classics in there. They do get home in a couple of episodes, reverse world. They also visit Coronation Street, Lister is played by Craig Charles who was in that soap at the time.
One of my favourite comedy series. I highly recommend gathering Queen Boomer and Baby Boomer and doing a weekly reaction series to the lot of it. There are some hilarious moments within Red Dwarf (I also recommend Fawlty Towers)
Story is Lister went on a pub crawl on earth and woke up on a moon of saturn with no means of getting back to earth. SO he formulated a plan Which was to sign up to the crew of deep space mining vessel BUT commit some crime - so instead of doing the 5 year long trip do something that would get him punished by being locked in Stasis chamber without pay. That way he would get back to earth without any of his time passing, though he'd still be broke... On the outward bound journey at the last port of call after working some time onboard he brought a cat on board (he made sure it was disease free) which was taboo - but when caught wouldn't give it up. So he was put in stasis. He released his cat in some deep deep cargo hold or something so it wouldn't be caught and euthenised. Some time later the ships reactor leaks and kills all on board aprt fromthe cats (it was pregnant) in the hold and Lister in the shielded stasis chamber. The ships computer takes action and fires the ship into the deepest uncharted regions of space for thousands / millions of years until radiation levels are safe to release Lister from stasis. Once released Lister has no purpose - all he ship mates the woman he loved etc all dust....He wanders unwashed and uncaring about the ship abject and alone when he hears what's happened. The ships computer sees this and has the ability to generate one hologram of a crew member - so it generates RIMMER (hence the "H" on his head) not because he was a friend of lister's but because they were co-workers in the lowest rank of maintenance & cleaning and Lister couldn't stand him and one of his main sources of inspiration was to jibe Rimmer. Rimmer has a Napoleon complex (due to his upbringing in a hosuehold with massively talented siblings and military parents that were ashamed & disappointed that he was unable to live up to their expectations) Rimmer is unintelligent, untalented , unimaginative, cowardly, selfish but at the same time aspires to be a leader and hero and thinks he really should be in charge and has convinced himself he is intelligent , talented , brave etc. (in fact the opposites of his real character) but fails to prove it at every turn. (Later on his alter ego "Ace" Rimmer turns up and is all the things Rimmer aspires to be and Rimmer obv hates him!).... So Lister now has purpose and the battle of wills / wits commences as they try to somehow pilot the ship back home, they have no idea how to though... nor does the ships computer as it's got silicon alzheimers...! (btw it seems like Rimmer was the cause of the reactor going boom through his incompetence combined with his massively misplaced confidence in his own ability..) During the radiation escape the cats, safe in the shielded hold, have evolved into humanoid cat creatures - eventually leaving the ship going off to found separate societies on different planets etc..after a disagreement about religion... all except "Cat". The creature "cat" retains the selfish, user , cruel , ego centered , sex obsessed and vain characteristics of the feline.... hence Cat's obsession with fashion, food , sex and getting whatever he wants. The Android Kryten (as in "the admirable Crighton") is a later addition found on a crashed space ship - it is basically a servant - But lister tries to break it's programming and make it have free will and become more human.
Lister is the only human left alive, rimmer is a hologram, cat is a descendent of the ships cat and krytan is a mecanoid ,the show doesn't start on starbug but on the mining ship red dwarf. Its one of my favourite shows ever.
