The issue is your watching them out of order, so that is why you are not quite getting things. It really is worth watching from the start. its an excellent series :)
The hologram character is called Rimmer, played by Chris Barrie. The counsellor in the scene is a different person (but you're right the do look similar). It's one of my favourite shows and you should check it out properly. The Kryton character doesn't join the show until the third series tho, just fyi.
Yeah Red Dwarf is super goofy, and very very funny in parts. There are some clever sci-fi concepts in the storylines too! Great show that starts off a bit odd but becomes really really good. It is definitely a show where you need the backstory though, it just makes everything so much funnier when you understand the characters properly.
🤣🤣my favourite episode, when I first saw Kryten trying to remove Listers rapidly shrinking boxer shorts whilst still wearing the vacuum cleaner groin attachment I was in tears🤣
@@misterprecocious2491 It is a great episode but if you don't know the characters beforehand etc it might fall flat a bit more...you need to get invested - hope he can get it done eventually from the start :D
You struck gold with Father Ted and this show is the same. From a small show tucked away on BBC2 in the late 80's, it quickly rose to cult status and became compulsive viewing. Its a show with a history and so it would be good to start at the beginning. It's a deliciously funny science fiction comedy that often spoofs the genre and plays with SF concepts in a clever and funny way.
I think the fact they can still sell out live cast meets proves that's not true. It should be bigger but it's a niche comedy. It almost never got made.
For this series, series VIII, context is everything. Red dwarf and all of the original deceased crew members have been recreated by nanobots. The "ship's counsellor" is one of the recreated crew.
Robert Llewellyn who plays Kryton hosted a show called "scrapheap challenge" after this show finished and hearing him with the same voice but with an English accent was funny as hell in the same way that hearing Tony Robinson (Baldrick from Blackadder) when he started hosting "Time Team" took some getting used to. The budget for this show started off very low, but even after it became a big hit with a bigger budget they didn't want to use the latest visual tech because they felt that the Red Dwarf space ship made from washing-up liquid bottles and egg cartons was part of the charm and the whole joke. Great show. ✌️❤️🇬🇧
All of your output is greatly appreciated. ♥ A full Red Dwarf episode that would be hugely entertaining for you is 'Quarantine'. Check out a clip of it.
The story of Patrick Stewart (Sir Pat of Star Trek) is interesting in how he became a fan. He was on the verge of suing Red Dwarf for plagiarism/copyright stuff until he continued to watch...then never bothered with the suing and kept on laughing 😄
not to mention Red Dwarf beat ST TNG to the screen by about a year and Sir Pat didn't know it at first. [inocorrect, see comments below, next I'll be remembering that The Hoff was Face in the A-Team! lol] my favs are the books, the shared names into 1 new name as author, sadly one left the project but still!
Whaaaat? Why would Patrick Stuart sue the writers of red dwarf ? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Surely it would be CBS It sounds like utter bollocks
@@grindelston5968 I think because this episode "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" almost entirely replicates themes from The Next Generation's holodeck. He saw other things too but eventually he saw the funny side also.
Had dinner on the other side of the glass to Kryton (Robert Llewelyn) at the Thai Cafe in Richmond, Surrey. He was eating inside and we were eating outside. My friend was a massive fan and she was freaking out😄
Maybe someone already explained but: the H means he’s a hologram and the Cat is the result of the ship’s cat evolving into a human over the thousands of years that they were in hibernation when the ship was adrift. (Hence the Cat’s preoccupation with fashion, preening and personal appearance).
If I were to recommend just one episode, it would be the first one. Not because it's anywhere near the best, but because it establishes the premise and usually makes people want to see where it goes.
You could do Red Dwarf episodes solo and save Idiot Abroad and Friday Night Dinner for reacting when the Queen is available to film. There is a LOT of content to watch from Red Dwarf. You have the 8 original series which ran 11 year from 1988, then there's the "Back To Earth" mini-series from 2009, then the latest 3 series 10, 11 and 12 which ran between 2012-2017 and finally a feature length movie "The Promised Land" which aired in 2020. Probably my fave sit com of all time with the most memorable characters.
Watching Red Dwarf is a lifelong commitment, your Majesty. It is SO British. It is complex and, just like all great works, needs to be studied. Be prepared to lose a lot of time.
Its slightly confusing without seeing the full episode... My favourite is Backwards World; when you get a chance to see whole episodes, you need to see that one; you need to watch it to the end! I'm practising Muppetry, my Mrs hasn't noticed anything different! Loving what you're doing on the channel 👍👍
Red Dwarf is brilliant. I really hope you find a way to watch it from the start. I don't care if you watch it off camera. Just knowing a thing you love has been seen means more than I ever thought it would. Maybe a facet of getting old? I'm not truely old. But I'm aware of my mortality, and knowing the things I loved have been shared helps. Pathetic really.
I'm not a lover of Scottish comedy, but there is one clip worth watching called 'Scottish Elevator - Voice Recognition' about two Scotsman trying to make a lifts (elevator in American) voice recognition try to understand them. The clip is pretty easy to find. For me Red Dwarf really came into its own when Kryten became one of the 'boys from the Dwarf' although I do miss the original Holly. Also look for the Rimmer Munchkin song, from the episode 'the Rimmer experience'.
Your reaction to Kryton slamming his first on the psychiatrist makes me wonder if you'd like the show 'Bottom' with Adrian Edmondson and the late Rik Mayall. Maybe you have already reacted to some and I missed it, but if you haven't and you like physical comedy, you would love Bottom.
I hope you react to more Red Dwarf. I really like Father Ted, but I LOVE Red Dwarf. It is superb. It started in 1988 and had a special tv movie in 2020, it's got to be one of the longest running scifis and comedies in history.
Cat isn't really Cat unless you fully understand the evolution of Cat. Then Cat really is a Cat. Same thing applies to most of the show. Best to start from the beginning. Plus, the overall quality of the show improves over time, it gets better and better.
Easy fix: stop watching Friday night dinner, Bo selecta, Man down. Keep watching Peep show, Red Dwarf, Al Murray, Fred Dibnah. And watch Inbetweeners again - You haven't even watched it 400 times yet like the rest of us. Keep up.
If you fancy doing full episodes of Red Dwarf, then I'll certainly be tuning in for them. I'd recommend watching them in order if you do, as the plot does develop through the series'. I hope you do - this reaction has put me right in the mood for watching through Red Dwarf again!
I could sit here giving episode after episode for you to watch. Season 10,11,12. Are among the best. There again, Season 1 to 12. Are fabulous. Can't wait for your next reaction to red dwarf.
Kryten is played by Robert Llewellyn who apart from his comedy acting roles has run a EV and renewable energy RU-vid channel and shows worldwide called Fully Charged Show with nearly 1M subs but his rants are a joy to behold on his podcast
When Red Dwarf first came out I wasn't that keen on it, but when Kryten (Robert Llewellyn, not the original Kryten) joined, for me, it improved. I now appreciate the first couple of series more on re-watching them.
I tried practicing the dark arts of muppetry.... but my mrs told me to pack it and not to be silly! Roll on your viewing of Red Dwarf, but with the countless shows you ALWAYS have quality stuff and great reactions. More best wishes to Queen Bee for recovery!
This is the premier episode of Series 8 (Season 8). The robots Kryten reference are tiny little nanobots that rebuilt the mining ship, Red Dwarf (hence the series' title), that they lost and were tailing in Series 6 and 7. In the process, the crew were also brought back to life. It's here where the remaining creator of the series started poking fun at the bizarre, convoluted nature of the Red Dwarf lore with the psychiatrist representing a newcomer and Kryten the series itself.
As with a lot of clips everything is about context.... The "H" stands for hologram. Red Dwarf started as a sitcom with ok one liner jokes, it later transformed into full blown drama. It gets better as it goes a long. By the way they tried to remake this in the States and made two, pilots they were both awful. They are both on RU-vid I think.
Fair enough on the Still Game, but you genuinely don’t know what you’re missing. I recall you being fairly ambivalent on Father Ted, yet you’re glad you stuck with that. Maybe something to revisit in the future.
@@stephenmurray2851 The first few episodes are quite poor but it then takes off. That's why I knew inside he'd give up after 1 or 2 episodes. Loads of American RU-vidrs have reacted to all the seasons, and say they love it.
No, the guy with the 'H' on his head is Rimmer, the guy Kryten is talking to in this clip is just a minor character from series 8. To understand Red Dwarf properly it is best to watch it right from the beginning, it'll make a lot more sense.🙂
i think after they lost red dwarf in one of the series, nanites rebuilt red dwarf, with the crew it had when it was first commissioned(it was a prison ship before it was an industry ship)
Please just do first episode series one so you know everything you are questioning but even then that won't explain the characters that came later, it's a long journey to get through and a very funny one
I would just put it off until you have a time slot. Red Dwarf is a great show. Watching bits of it is like watching spoilers of any other standard show. There is a lot of context that goes into their humor as well which you won't have until watching the story plot unfold.
Red Dwarf can be very confusing...I started watching when series 8 was first released on PBS in the states and when that was done they started over with series 1 which was an entirely different show. For one thing, Rimmer was a hologram and the crew were dead, except for Lister, who wasn't interested in having relations with the Kochanski who was his biological mother. 😂
The word Muppet is not always a term of endearment. Sometimes its used in a derisory way, e.g if someone cuts you up on the road you might shout out "You muppet" meaning idiot or worse.
Hi King Boomer love yr channel & no foul mouth swearing! 👍 A plus for me.Take a look at The Two Ronnie's Four candles sketchl.Hilerious😂 May have already.
Love this show so much, It brings back warm memories of the time when I was in high school. Please king Boomer can you react to " a show called Facejacker" as i've mentioned previously. Good one to start on is "Dufrais At The Baseball Game | Facejacker " ( 8.47 minute clip). Then perhaps " Fake Traffic Warden Pranks Eastenders Star & Other Augustus Pranks (Compilation) | Facejacker. You wont regret checking out this show.
The “Still Game” thing, I wouldn’t worry about it it’s very specialist for me..I’m always reticent to see people react to it when I see lots of Scottish folks recommend it because it’s from a specific time and place and if you don’t know those folks or that culture I think it’s particularly difficult to get to grips with..✌️
This scene requires certain context. At the beginning of the series, the crew of Red Dwarf is wiped out in a radiation leak (save for Lister, who was in suspended animation at the time). Rimmer dies, hence him being a hologram. Kryten joins the cast later in the series. After the accident, the ship's master computer Holly was forced to keep Lister in suspended animation until the radiation decayed, which ended up being about 3 million years. At the time of the accident, Lister had a pet cat that was pregnant. Having also survived the accident, the cats evolved into a humanoid species. The Cat character is a descendant of Lister's pet cat. Later in the series, nanobots inadvertently resurrect the entire crew while attempting to restore the ship itself. Thus from the crew's perspective, the "present day" is just days or weeks after Lister would've gone into stasis, even though it's actually been 3 million+ years. This is why the counselor describes Kryten's creation date as "in the future" -- the counselor is unaware that they he did indeed die in a radiation leak and was later resurrected.
This show started in the late 80s and had a cult fanbase in the UK and US by the mid 90s. There were alot of conventions, unofficial and official. The last official seems to have been a couple of yrs ago. Given it's a parody some fans would dress up as they do at star trek conventions and comic con, usually where they'd sell shirts, collectable official 'toys' with the actual cast invited and signing dvds and other items
