We never learned about this in school, as a Swede this is very interesting - wish I had learned about this long time ago...

I mean it doesn't really matter how professional you are. Beating an enemy force of 3x your own size over and over and over again is crazy af. If I singlehandedly won a boxing match against 4 dudes at once I'd be proud. Doesn't matter if I have trained more than them, it's a crazy achievement. Much thanks to the swedish kings fighting alongside the troops like brave men to inspire and not just sit back throwing thousands of your men to their deaths while you sit back and take a drink. And even if they were better trained.. that just means you're smart. Why would you not do anything to win? Being well trained doesn't take away from the feat, it just cements that it was a deserved win and not a lucky one.

Sweden had no other choice than to be overachievers. We never had the population or economy to really compete on equal terms with bigger countries. All we could rely on was loyality and very brave warriors, and tactical generals.

Charles XII was the latest king that was fighting in the frontline of an empire, that's why he's the latest true warrior king
@dahlizz99
@dahlizz99 2 года назад
Yeah they did the line shooting back and fourth but the swedes didn't have the men for that so we went for "gå på" basically attack. So as the enemy shot at the swedes the swedes just charged them and killed them by hand and the enemies fled

Here are some diary excerpts from Joachim Lyth, a lieutenant in the Swedish army As the Swedish dragoons were crossing the frozen lake near Jägersdorf, they were forced to dismount and lead their horses over the slippery ice. "... they laughed loudly and said so that we could hear it clearly: wir wollen die Mäusen lebendig fangen [we will catch the mice alive]. It was through God's help another game and dance for them, as soon as the Swedish dragons came on horseback again. " And regarding the massacre: "...they threw down their arms, removed their hats and begged for mercy [...] but His excellency and Herr General Renschiöld let form a circle of dragoons, cavalry and infantry into which all remaining russians, about 500 men, were forced into and, without mercy, they were shot and stabbed so that they fell over eachother like slaughtered sheep."

with all rights. The Russians had slaughtered Swedes a few years earlier.
@tntfreddan3138

@@1891726 The entire massacre as an act of revenge. Though, Russia will be Russia, so Peter I turned this into propaganda. Had he only stayed like a real leader at Narva, and fought with his men, there would have been a good chance that Sweden wouldh ave been the only country in history to defeat Russia. Would probably have been a time record, as well. A real speedrun, if you will.

At Gettysberg on the third day, the largest cannonade of that war happened, the Confederates had more cannon but less ammunition, and expended all of their ammunition, the Union withheld part of their counter-battery fire, so they had plenty grapeshot to send into the Confederate infantry. So yes, you can have a kind of ... continuous fire, but only if you have a lot of appropriate ammunition, which the Union did have. This is less of a problem with archers, than with muskets for example, because reload of a bow is so quick.

But also, with artillery space isn't limiting, most often, I believe?

Cannon used to riffle fire on ships to avoid putting all of the force of the volley on the bearings in one go. Since the cannon are attached to the side of the hull, firing too many at once, at the resulting recoil could potentially tear the side of the ship open, so they riffle fired. As for land battle, depends what you've got. Some cannon on the flanks of the battery tend to be held in reserve to fire at approaching attacks so that the main body doesnt fire and then get charged by cavalry while it relaods. I'd recommend watching a video by brandon f on fire by rank. Its about the infantry tactics you mentioned but will give you an idea of how the infantry used to fire and why, with an idea of how difficult these drills can be for infantry, you can extrapolate how hard it might be to organise for artillery, where distances between batteries concentrating on a target are often much greater when it comes to command and control.

The Russians still have the same strategy in war, just throw more people in to the fight. They’re not known to be good at military tactics!

They fight the same way today as back then. With overwhelming numbers is what is in their doctrine and it works as well today as it did back then.

Well, that is not always true. And besides, it's not enough just to outnumber the enemy. How many times have the Turks lost to the Austrians, having numerical superiority? How many times have British colonial troops defeated numerically superior forces? Russia may not always boast of competent tactics, but to say that Russia does not know how to use tactics at all is complete nonsense.
