You can definitely ask questions if you need help. It's a legitimate reason to talk to people. Skip "hi, my name is" and go directly to the question "excuse me, can you help me...". If it seems like a person who is nice and chatty, you can possibly tell them that you are from the US later. Keep the conversation volume low if you are talking to people on the subway train. If you just want to chat, my best tip is to visit places that serve alcohol. Swedes are more open to talking to strangers when drinking alcohol.

Please take the advice to come in the Summer seriously. I give this same advice also to everybody I talk to about coming here. Yes, there are musums, but some of them are outdoors (e.g. Skansen). And life is so much nicer with everybody being out and events are happening all the time. In the winter there is the ice scating at Kungsträdgården. That might be a cool experience. But the summer is so much better. And I am sure you want to go to the islends and see the parks as well.

Swede here, no we don't care if your from the US, just keep to yourself. We don't care if you're from somewhere else, thats nothing special for us. Gosh Americans... darkness and winter is so scary,... etc. December is cozy with snow, twinkling lights and Christmas vibes. We also have fall and spring, lets not forget. And yes, I've been to all of those places in Stockholm, so? Most people have here. Skansen is great, Nordiska museet too, Hallwylska, Livrustkammaren etc, there are so many museums you have to stay a week at least. Forget the islands, that might take you a year. I mean, go there, just forget about visiting all of them. The Stockholm archipelago is beautiful.

Don't get too full of yourself there Swede the Germans if they wanted to could take over your pathetic country in like 2 days as they did in most of the countries in WWII . Please don't try to flex any position you think that you have against others like the Americans because others can easily do that to you and your country . Have some respect for others like a decent person would . Don't easily forget what happened in the past !

A little tip. I come from southern Sweden and visit Stockholm from time to time. Something I like is to have a beer or coffee in a small pub during high summer. Preferably near a marina. People from all over the world and easy to talk to. As far as safety is concerned, there is no major danger. It is almost exclusively criminals who fight with other criminals. When it comes to assimilation, the problem is that the volumes of immigrants have been far too high for a long time. It is no longer possible to integrate them. They create their own spheres and it becomes “us and them”.

One suggestion, please go off the beaten path sure many of those are a "must see" as a tourist the first time if you only have a few days, but Stockholm has so much more to offer! Many of those places i avoid like the plague although living in the middle of the city, since it's just tourists there which also means for example restaurants are not so great in those areas since they don't rely on people coming back :-) lol in rush hour there is no personal space :-p but for sure if there are 10 empty seats yeah don't sit next to someone! People won't notice you if you speak english since it's almost as common as swedish. But if you ask people for advice, direction etc. people are in general very friendly and will help out! I honestly love not having a server hanging over my shoulder and just wave if I want another beer and not having to tip 20% and actually seeing the final price when I see the menu! Sure it's a nice courtesy to tip a little bit 5-10% or just round it up a bit if you got EXCELLENT service but not mandatory at all! Finally have fun trying to visit + 24 000 islands in just Stockholm :-p

The signs on the hardware store say (top to bottom): Cement (swedish for concrete but might also be the name of products): Fireproof tiles & clay. Husquvarna gjutgods: cast iron/castings. Jagt & Fiskeredskap: Hunting and fishing gear. Jagt is spelled jakt today, meaning hunt or hunting. Krut & dynamit: Gunpowder and dynamite. Anthracit(es) & Cokes, basically different types of coal for heating etc.

I used to work at Gröna Lund theme park during Halloween, I lived in Södertälje with my girlfriend but I'm originally from a small town just north of Örebro and I knew jack shit about the city. One day a guy had jumped infront of the train by Stockholm södra and I had to continue the rest of the journey by subway. I, being an ignorant decided to hop off at Slussen as I thought that was the closest stop... It was not and I had to run for several kilometers through the city to get to work. Everyone had a good laugh.

I would pick a cheap hotel on Södermalm. Start your days with long walks around the city islands. Don't forget all the lookout points on Söder. And no more than one museum per day, okay! Use the public transportation system also, look at all the art in the Metro. Or do what I do several times per week since a few years, ride around Stockholm on a bike with at least two cameras. I will ride in to the city later today, although it will be a bit chaotic as Greta will be out on the streets protesting this afternoon.

Greeting random people is fine if you meet someone somewhere outside the cities where you don't expect to run into someone, but doing it to people in the cities you will get weird looks. I live in a small city, and we would never greet strangers in the city park or whatever, but when I hit the jogging track leading out of civilisation and I run into someone, we greet each other and maybe even stop to talk. If you are a social person you can always adopt a dog and use the "dog trick," because then Swedes are forced to interact with each other because then they have something to talk about haha. This culture is best noticed on public transport, where it is like Japan and everyone is silent and not talking to anyone, and if all seats are taken, you never just sit next to someone and you should always respectfully ask if it is okay to sit next to them, and of course you will always get a yes, but just make sure to ask first as common courtesy or you will make it awkward. xD

I think you will have no problem at all connecting and talk with Swedes who are 55 yrs or younger.. but some older Swedes tend to feel a bit unsecure with speaking English although they understand it.. and to understand Us a little better you gotta understand that the older Swedes were brought up in a version of Socialistic Society where you should start with doing your job and always be polite and not "steal" anybody elses time or attention ... IMO, It`s almost like we have a kind of "Do not Disturb"- sign on our backs.. (and as an American, be sure not to mix up Socialism with Communism, these are 2 vastly different systems..) // btw, I laughed out loud when I heard you wrong..I believe you said you wanted to try Herring..??!! ..to me it almost sounded/came out like you said " I want to try Heroine.." :D :D ..but jokes aside, You are doing great mate, I love your vids and it`s awesome to see you dive into History, Geography and all things We all need to learn more about..

We are not completely antisocial... To break the ice and to start communicating with a Swede, be polite... like apologizing and asking for help or asking how things work, etc... after that you can then see if the interest is there to keep communicating… it's always easier with young people, the older generation are always more reserved! Another tip is to keep a low profile (don't talk too loudly and don't take up too much space...) we Swedes are quite quiet in public places!

Saying Malmö->Stockholm isnt that far and *only* should take about 20 hours is super funny and so American. That trip takes 6 hours. Thats also in heavy traffic between two big cities. If you travel from Trelleborg (most southern city) to Kiruna (Most northern city), THAT will take about 21 hours according to google maps, its often quicker due to traffic being lighter. Sweden is a big country, but its not that wide. Its long and thin. Travelling from east to west is relatively fast. South to north obviously is farther, but thats also not too slow either because out highway system is pretty good. Way better than America at least, where youd get stuck in traffic a lot since its so car dependent. We also have amazing train connections spanning the whole country, so personally I prefer just taking a train when Im traveling to another city.

Im Swedish, did my mimlitary service in Stockholm and stayed there 3 years afterwards. Ive seen it all. __________________________________________________ The TL:DR, from my experience, on Stockholm is: Absolutely *_AMAZING_* city to visit. One of the worst places I ever lived in. And Ive lived in 18 cities in 7 countries. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Full read: Sweden over all is a great place to live. As long as you DONT live in Stockholm Crime rate is probably about tripple there than any other place in the county. Everything is at least twice as expensive as anywhere else. Only 10% of what you need are within walking distance unless you live dead in the center (which will most likely be 3-4 times more expensie than anywhere else) And Im not saying ALL Stockholm people are narcissistic a-h0les but the proportion of self centered jack a$$es in Stockholm is also, atleast, three time higher than anywhere else Ive visited. However, you will probably NOT be subject to this if your visiting, because an almost universal trait of swedes is that we generally like tourists, At least on an individual level. On mass they can annoy people but meeting one or two at the time is often very exciting. E.g: Exchage students often becomes the most popular kids in school. We find you fascinating and are mostly very eager to help. The second you open your moth and speak English, 90% of the a$$h0les will immediately drop their attitude and gladly give you directions or whatever you approached them for. But if you live there and become "just another guy" they act alot like the stereitype of New Yorkers. I say Stereotype cuz I dont know if New Yorkers are actually like that or if its just a stereotype. But alot of Stockholm people fit that exact picture.

Living in Stockholm I couldn't agree more about the weather. I feel sorry when I see tourists visiting during the winter knowing the city is a million times better during summer. It literally is like night and day. Like a completely different city. Everyone comes alive. Myself I feel like when it's not summer, you're just waiting for the next summer when you can live a little again. From depressing to a wonderful big European city with friendly people enjoying life Winter depression is a real thing here and common

If you are in Sweden for 1 week, you will have to visit around 38,200 islands every day if you want to visit them all. You don't have to be afraid to talk to a Swede if you want to ask about something, e.g. about the road or where the store is etc., but we usually don't like to chat about random things with random strangers, we don't really know what to talk about - if we have to talk to a random stranger, we usually talk about the weather in the absence of anything else.

It will be a bit hard to go to all the islands in Stockhols Archipelago because there is close to 30.000 or them. In Sweden over all there is about 270 000 islands =D I did the misstake posting before i was done. Don't talk to people on a train unless you need to ask for direction or the like. Outside of that there is nothing more annoying then a person bothering me when i am sitting on a train reading, napping, listening to music or just sit. I think that is where the line goes tbh =D As for the buildings in Stockholm, if you are in Stockholm, using the subway, trams or busses you will pass most of them. It is not hard to navigate around Stockholm city, it is sort of packed. But make research before you go so you don't get lost.

Regarding safety, I'd say the city is safe for normal people. If anything, the uprise of the larger scale criminality seem to have made many of the small type gangster go in to hiding. There is a HUGE problem with gang violence and shootings, but those generally target each other. I also believe that would be the case for the rest of the country. Regarding the islands, 260000 islands in Sweden, 30,000 in Stockholm alone. Think you need more than a week!

Unless you enjoy cold and darkness, the only good reason for visiting Sweden outside of summer would be to come here in February or early Mars (whenever Shrove Tuesday is that year) to eat a semla. You can usually get them from Christmas all through spring, but to be sure (and traditionally correct) you only eat them on Shrove Tuesday. Or fettisdag (= fat Tuesday) as we call it. They are the perfect treat to beat the winter depression. And even more perfect for ruining your new years resolution to get a beach bod before summer when outside clothes can be more optional. I would say *most* people don't like being talked to by a random stranger. Some of us are different. I would say a majority would respond out of politeness, but be aware of body language and more to judge if you should keep on talking. They may act friendly, but are actually annoyed by you. But if you explain that you are visiting and want directions or other information, I think most will help you out. Just don't expect a new friend. Me on the other hand looks and sounds like grumpy old man, but are willing to talk to anyone if you have something to say. It's kind of fun to have a deep talk with some stranger and then probably never seeing them again. But if you say "hello!" to people you meet on the street, they are just going to be confused thinking "How does he know me? Who *was* that? Did we work together? Did he go to my school?"

If you want to talk to someone and have a reason to talk to someone, sure go ahead and speak up. Say you are tourist and want advice or just talk to someone is good reason enough, if that person have time, but greeting and talk to random people you just passing by is big no. Big cities are the same everywhere. why would you go around and nod and say hello to 1000's of random people?? In smaller villages/towns, yes nod or say hello is more accepted/normal thing to do. Sweden's gun violence is a bit over reacted by media. Not saying it is not happening. but almost everything is between gangs, gang members shoot/bomb other gang members, you must be very unlucky if anything happen around you or you get involved as a tourist. You should not be worried about it. Even Malmö is safe city compared to most other cities in the world.

Find out yourself a bit about the country you want to visit... such as knowledge and ethics, some facts about customs and culture and everything you yourself want to know about the places you want to visit... then your stay will be more fun, safer and above all, it will be easier for you to be accepted and it will be easier to blend in with the population! However, I haven't heard anyone talk about the biggest problem we have during the winter, all the ice that forms when the snow has melted a little or a lot and it freezes back to ice. If you're lucky, you'll see that there's ice everywhere, but if you're unlucky, you won't see the ice at all. People often injure themselves these days and it becomes a heavy burden on the healthcare system.

If you make eye contact and nod your head to a stranger in Stockholm, they will most likely think you are weird but won't react more than possibly an arched eyebrow or a frown... most will just continue on their way without any reaction.

You don't drive unless you're doing a scenic route, you do public transportation like the train.

A nod and a smile is perfectly fine, at least if you're just passing. Maybe don't stare down any girls on the subway though

The reason some places stopped using cash is because they got robbed to many times. If you don't have cash in the store thieves have less of an incentive to cause trouble and then it just spread.

This chap always comes as negative, finding ‘don’ts’, rather than indicating positive things you can do when you visit somewhere. You sometimes feel that he would be happier staying at home.

He usually does the DOs as well, and his don'ts are often "don't miss out on". Besides, it's never good to just listen to the positives. It's good if people have heard what other people consider the negatives to get their own expactations in order.

I worked with immigrants coming from all sort of countries like Pakistan and what not, they come to Europe with the mindset of staying a couple of years, making a lot of money and going back to their original country (and rarely actually happens btw) and that's the big difference with the US, immigrants come in your country to stay, make a business, make a family. Even if Europe *maybe* need these immigrants workers they arrive with this sort of looter mindset which is the fartest from willing to integrate. Also nowadays they watch their country's TV, books and communicate with their countrymen on socials so integration is a bigger challenge than in the past but I've heard it's real problem in the US too now with Hispanic people not integrating at all like in the past let alone assimilating hence all the political turmoil

Yes, the red brick building by the water with the tower and the three golden crowns at the top, is Stockholm's City Hall. And the bridge is one of three bridges that are next to each other. This is called the Vasa Bridge. This is a central area close to the Sheraton Hotel, Central Station, the Government Office, the Opera House, the Royal Castle and the Riksdag House. On the left in the picture you come to Gamla Stan, on the right in the picture is Norrmalm.
