The infancy of EU, the Steel and Coal union was a way to prevent future wars between France and Germany, but more imortantly a way to help the economy of the countries. It had nothing to do with fear of the Soviet Union

The reconciliation effort after WW2 had nothing to do with being afraid of the Soviet Union and everything to do with the quite realistic fear that the next war between France and Germany would be the end of both. And the realisation that the only way to prevent it was to break the deadly spiral of rivalry and hatred between them. The USSR didn't enter into it.

Schuman's offer had NOTHING to do with "fearing the Soviet Union". Schuman was born German and a member of the German Imperial administration. You have to remember that WWII was more a war against the Nazis and Italian Fascists more than against Germany (and Italy), albeit controlled by the Nazis. The Allies were more interested in rebuilding the European mainland than perpetuating animosity against the German and Italian people (popular sentiment aside). Germany received more assistance than the UK despite being on the victorious side. Simplistically, rationing after WWII ended in West Germany in 1950, which didn't end in the UK til 1954, and the UK didn't fully repay USA for war loans until 2006.

1:35 No, it's not "just" fear from the Soviet Union. This is a summary, that only someone who doesn't live here can make. It is also a result of the end of a very deadly war and the vision to prevent this in the future. What lead to WW2 and what can we do to prevent this from ever happening again was the main goal here. What made it possible, what structural errors lead to it, what mistakes were made, what chances to prevent or stop it were analyzed and the search for solutions and a better future started. The biggest problem was Frances and Germanys rivalry and their manifested hate for each other echoing from past conflicts.

7:29 The Commission and the Council are representatives from each member. One per member nation. And member nations aren't equally in size, population size and wealth and economical power. This ensures that all members have a say in it, but it doesn't take the quantity of the people into account and it is always only an indirect representative active. The Parliament is the missing direct connection to the population.

While each country nominates a commissioner, the commissioners are each give a department where they are supposed to work for the union as a whole and not as representatives of their countries. In that they resemble cabinet members in national governments. And while in the Council, each head of state or government has one vote, in a number of areas decisions can be taken via a dual majority. Depending on the type of decision, you need either 55% or 72% of all countries agreeing, as well as enough countries to represent 65% of the population of the EU.

It's not so much that the Council and Commission represent the HR and Senate. It's more that the Commission is the executive branch, where the commissioners work for the EU, as "ministers" in the "EU government", and the Council represents the states involved. The Council members still represent their nation states so when there is a bill on agriculture, the commissioner of Agriculture proposes it, the Council meeting for this would be all the national ministers of Agriculture to feedback on how this law would impact them, ask for modifications and so forth. The Parliament was originally just to include the citizens in some way, so that the people would have some say in the process. Over the years, the Parliament's power has grown so that it is now able to give more than just opinions - it has to pass their chamber too for things to actually become real. So instead of two chambers, there are three - two of which represent the nation-states (with the council being like the Senate, each state having the same amount of say, and the parliament like HR, proportional by population). TLDR: If you want to compare it to the US, the Commission is the White House, the Council is the Senate, and the Parliament is HR. (A very rough and simplified explanation but as close as I can make a comparison)

16:50 Just for context surrounding Ireland's initial rejection of both the Nice and Lisbon treaties: it was because of ambiguities in the treaties which may have conflicted with Ireland's strict military neutrality. Ireland maintains a system called "The Triple Lock" for her armed forces. This is a system wherein Irish soldiers can only be deployed to a jurisdiction with approval of i) the Irish parliament, ii) the government of the jurisdiction in question and iii) a successful UN Security Council resolution or UN General Assembly resolution. Both the Nice and Lisbon Treaties were amended to give Ireland exemptions on articles which could potentially conflict with her neutrality. Once amended the treaties passed.

While it's of course not 1:1, the closest you can get is probably to think of the commission as "the government" (they are the political leadership, the president of it is seen as the "head" of the EU), the EU council consisting of the heads of states of the member states as "the senate", the EU parliament (nowadays) has the status of the house of representatives, it is elected by the European people, they would be the equivalent to "the parliament" in many countries, or the House of Commons in the UK. And the EU court of justice obviously being the equivalent to the US supreme court.

0:37 "The West looks to the US for reconstruction aid." Some mistakes there... They coloured Portugal the same as the rest of the West, so, the quoted sentence is wrong, because Portugal did not "look to the US for reconstruction aid". It's true Portugal was *offered* reconstruction aid under the Marshal Plan (because although Portugal was not a belligerent country, its economy had been affected by the war), but our *dictator* actually *refused* such aid, because he feared it would open up Portugal to Western-style democracies. So, the colouring on the map at best depicts the countries that were offered help, not the ones that requested/received it. And in fact, not even that, because the US also offered to include Soviet-occupied countries in the Marshal Plan (and the Soviets force them to refuse, of course).

The Commission is the equivalent of the Civil Service with the Commissioners being Secretaries of Departments; the Commission is not part of the parliamentary system but it recommends, investigates and suggests. What you have to remember is that this is a group of countries with different politics, priorities and attitudes, not just languages. For example, the southern European states tax cigarettes much more than the northern states while the northern ones tax wine far more than those in the south.

History has shown that De Gaulle was right to veto the UK. Also, it is important to point out that he didn't do it just because he thought the UK was close to the USA... the major reason was because the UK has always viewed the European Project as a simple commercial block (instead of the political project that France and Germany were trying to build). Unlike other eurosceptic countries, the UK had the numbers to shape the political agenda and disturb the evolution of the EU (as they did in numerous occasions). They didn't join the Euro, they didn't join Schengen, they payed less... and all for what? They should have never joined the EU.

Kind of “European government”, with the right of initiative. European Council: Made up by European leaders, it leads in foreign policy ("collective Head of State"), formal ratification of important documents and involvement in the negotiation of the treaty changes European Parliament: can amend and reject legislation proposed by the Commission. To make a proposal for legislation, it needs the Commission to draft a bill before anything can become law Council of the EU: Made up by national ministers in the matter. Together with the Parliament, it serves to amend, approve or disapprove the proposals of the European Commission, holds the budgetary power of the Union and has greater control than the Parliament over the more intergovernmental areas of the EU, such as foreign policy and macroeconomic co-ordination

The commission is more like the President and his cabinet; the council is similar to the senate; and the parliament is like the house. The main difference to the US/UK is that the power to introduce bills lies with the commission. This is pretty typical of functional democracies in my opinion, as it removes the silly bullshit where bills keep being introduced by grandstanders in the house both in UK and US. Instead the people that have the expertise in the different areas, with large staffs that can draft laws, are the ones actually drafting laws. As in technical experts in law and the areas of the law are the ones drafting them. This is major in my opinion and is a very common thing to hear when americans comment on laws in the EU. Projecting upon the EU their own broken system and complaining that "old people that know nothing about technology making laws that they know nothing about". Which is completely incorrect in the EU, but is completely correct for the US. The parliament, council and the people can request of the commission to introduce laws for the review and approval of the council and parliament, and the council and parliament can propose amendments.

Nations that in the past wasted centuries and millions lives fighting each other, almost to the point of destroying each other, are now friendly neighbors to the point that war between them has simply become unconceivable - it would be like a civil war. The various institutions are still in a development process. The highest body is the European Council, which consists of the heads of government. This is where the fundamental decisions are made. Decisions are usually made unanimously. This has been called into question recently because heads of state have repeatedly extorted advantages for their country. The Council of the European Union is the second chamber, the Senate in the USA. It is made up of the ministers/government representatives of the member states and is not elected. It has more power than the parliament. It proposes the European Commission. The Commission is something like the government. Here, too, each state has a seat. Laws must be initiated by the Commission. The European Parliament is the only one elected by the people and has the fewest rights. Its main purpose is to control. The governments have power in the EU. The EU is still essentially a confederation of states. If a government complains that the EU has decided on nonsense, then usually a member of the same government in Brussels voted for it. The large number of member states makes finding compromises increasingly difficult and calls into question the EU as a union of states. Sooner or later, the EU will have to decide whether to dissolve itself because decisions are no longer possible or to take a step further towards the United States of Europe. Russia and China will play an indirect role in this. The euro came into being because the individual national currencies were too weak against the dollar. When the USA reduced its debts by printing money, the Europeans had to buy up the freshly printed money and thus pay off the USA's debts. European trade was mainly in dollars and the Europeans had to keep it stable, at the expense of their own currencies. The euro prevents this because Europe now buys and sells mainly in euros. In return, the USA is now demanding higher military spending from the Europeans in order to ease the burden on its own budget. This will lead to geostrategic conflicts of interest in the future. In the 1980s, Thatcher demanded: "I want my money back" and pushed through a comprehensive British bonus. When the British left, they were surprised that they did not have more money. When the British government complained about decisions in Brussels, government representatives in the Commission and Council had previously agreed to these decisions. The British feared that freedom of travel would lead to an increase in illegal immigration. After leaving the EU, it is greater today than it was then, because Frontex no longer protects them. The British had many illusions about leaving.

The European Parliament is an assembly where elected members can ask questions. Unfortunately, no-one is in the room to answer them. Accountability is essential to democracy. This 'parliament' responds to questions via communiques prepared by committees.

Then again EU doesn't hold any power in it self, it can do only things that all the members collectively mandates it to do which then means that the accountability is within everyone's own governments.

Fear from the Soviet Union probably helped to form the EU, but the real reason was the second world war, that was an eye-opener for Europeans that major changes were needed, and the formation of the EU was a big part of that change. Today, the EU is about representing European interest for its members on the global stage whiles reducing barrages to trade among its members. As for how the EU will evolve, I suspect it will depend on other major powers like the US and China, basically, Europeans will likely change and integrate more depending on need, which the main cause of that will probably be the US and China and maybe Russia and India, being that for European countries to compete long term with the likes of the US and China, they are likely going to have to work much closer together, being that the individual members are too small to compete with the big powers, I think that reality in time will push further integration in one form or another.

Ok, as the video doesn't touch this subject anymore: the European Parliament is the full representation of the people of all member nations. The European Council, the Council of the EU and the European Commission are made by each nations leader (presidents, prime ministers, chancelors, etc.), by ministers for a specific area (agricultural, infrastructure, economy, etc.) by each nation and by appointed representatives (commissioners) by each member nation. These people are also elected in each nation, but they usually are representatives of the ruling party (the one who won such an election) and ruling coalitions (an alliance of parties who won such an election) and always ignore the minorities, made up of the parties that lost such an election and who are in opposition. So the opinion of millions of people is not represented by these people. The Parliament, which is elected by all citizens, corrects this issue. So all are represented here in a fair manner.

@@exorbis9880 Maybe I should explain it for you? I'm from Germany; I vote for party A in elections. But party B wins those elections. My party will serve as opposition on national level then, while party A runs the country. That's totally fine - party B will still do the opposition job and keep party A in check. My opinion isn't what is shaping the countries politics, but it is still there as a counter-weight. Better than nothing. But party B will now send their leader to the European Council, where he/she will fully ignore my opinion. And his/her ministers will go to the Council of the EU, where those will also fully ignore people like me. Their actions are not in check anymore. Opposition of my party A has no effect on their actions on the European level. It's only working on national level, because that's how it is designed. But thankfully I can also vote in the European election and vote for party A again for the European Parliament. There they will represent my opinion - either in leading position or in opposition again. Balance restored - I'm represented again.

It wasn't really luck, the US and UK had no choice but to intervene, because if they didn't, there's a fair chance the Nazis could have taking over Russia, if the Nazis established themselves there and with the resources they would have had, it was only a matter of time before the Nazis likely would have taken on the UK and US directly, which I suspect both countries knew that and had to nip it in the bud before the Nazis get too powerful. After all, we would have to be fools to think the Nazis would stop invading other countries, the UK was a prime target and the US likely was once the Nazis took over Russia, so luck had little to do with it and de-escalation likely did. With that said, European countries are thankful for the help from the US, but without that intervention, things could have got a lot worse on a global scale, which likely would have eventually taken the war direct to the US.

There are many reason US help france: 1. Geopolitical interest: The defeat of France and the victory of Nazi Germany would have had disastrous consequences for American interests in Europe and around the world. A Europe dominated by Nazi Germany would have been a threat to the security of the United States and to its democratic way of life. Helping France resist the German invasion was a way to protect American interests and promote a more stable world order. 2. Economic factors: The United States had significant economic interests in France. They had invested billions of dollars in French companies and the French economy. A German victory would have threatened these investments and could have resulted in a significant loss of money for American companies. Helping France stay in the war was a way to protect American economic interests. 3. Supply of war materials: From the start of the war, the United States supplied France and Great Britain with war materials, such as weapons, ammunition, food, and oil. This aid program, known as “Lend-Lease,” allowed the Allies to continue fighting against Nazi Germany. American aid was essential to the Allied war effort and played an important role in the eventual victory. 4. Opening of a second front: In 1942, the United States landed in North Africa, opening a second front against Nazi Germany. This operation, known as Operation Torch, relieved pressure on the Eastern Front and contributed to the German defeat at Stalingrad. American intervention also played an important role in the liberation of France in 1944. 5. Common ideals and values: The United States and France shared common ideals and values, such as democracy, freedom and human rights. The victory of Nazi Germany would have represented a defeat for these values. Helping France defeat Germany was a way to defend these values and promote a better world. 6.aid and support against Japanese imperialism Indeed, by supporting France, the United States was able to: Opening a Second Front Against Nazi Germany: This helped relieve pressure on the Eastern Front, where the Soviet Union was suffering heavy losses against the Germans. Preventing France from completely falling under the control of Nazi Germany: This would have given Germany access to additional resources and strategic military bases, which would have made the war even more difficult for the Allies. Maintain a military presence in Europe: This allowed the United States to prepare for the opening of a second front in Europe, which took place in June 1944 with the Normandy landings. Additionally, France's victory had a positive effect on Allied morale and helped undermine support for the war among the German population. Don't forget in 1941 japon attack pearl harbor and us search for allies and its how at the beggining us come in the war to help france and his allies. And there's some war between union soviet and japan, soviet win that in 1945 and japan surrounder, so imagine USA didn't help france and europe, an axe europe/union soviet/japan would arrive against USA. However, it is important not to minimize the role of the French in their own liberation. The French Resistance: Thousands of French people fought the German occupation as part of the Resistance, carrying out sabotage, intelligence operations and attacks against German forces. Free French Forces: French soldiers also fought alongside the Allies on other fronts, notably in North Africa and Italy and these element are very often forget when people talk about that. The role of General Leclerc: General Leclerc and his 2nd Armored Division played a crucial role in the liberation of Paris in August 1944 and after the rest of the territory, at the final France deliver herself with arms given by US and UK. So never forget It was the French who fought courageously to free themselves in the end!!! When you think about that, both of them was lucky of found each other and get their owns interests. Now imagine if soviet union win against nazi take the europe or even make ally with them, us would lose all and get a new front against them.

Hi Connor, you do need to delve deeper into the EU, we in the UK believed the joining of the EEC would be a good. There was a national vote and the people decided. The transition to the EU was signed away by the government of the day, no voting was given. Many have resented this, and then the ever encompassing control of the EU has not helped its cause. You are right to question the EU parliament power. So why did the UK leave the EU, well, it was a very closely run result, as the EU wasn’t a bad idea in my humble opinion, but it was becoming apparent that the UK was being drained and the rest of the EU was progressing far better. The best thing we ever did was to keep the UK£ and not join the EU€…… Since leaving…. It’s easy to say life is better or worse…. Sure, its more complicated again, but those of us who remember life before the EU, its no different. My wife was from Germany, so I’m far from anti european! However even she would say how different Germany was becoming, more controlled and isolated, whereas in the UK, we had shunned ID cards…. When we voted out of the EU, it shocked even me, there were some good aspects of being a member, but also a quite dark ever controlling part of it. Overall, a very good idea, wrecked by idiot politicians….as with everything in life….

My hypothesis is that by creating a culture of not sharing your opinion on politics, you in return create a culture of not listening to the opinions of others, which just leads to misconceptions about the opposing side's reasons for believing what they do. I know it's not easy, but it is possible to make your case without daemonising the opposition. I think that's the first step.

The EU is not a union of the people, but a union of the ruling class. It is also a bureaucratic giant with absolutist aspirations. As a democratic citizen of an EU member state, it is very frustrating to see how little the EU cares about the sovereignty and sorrows of its member states.

You just contradicted yourself, if you want an EU that cares for her own citizens (something that does more than a national) you have to vote for EU elections + a stronger more federalized union, a less united Europe have the opposite effect... The EU does not have more civil servants than a very big city. And that, for 400 million people. And the universal suffrage for the European Parliament makes it a union of peoples. The EU is not there to care about the sovereignty of the member states. That is a member state responsibility. And the care for member states, well, ask Ireland and Greece. Yes, the medicin was hard, but it worked. Otherwise those countries would have collapesed, at least economically. Thank the Germans and the Benelux countries to fund that operation.
