The crash you see James may in the evo was from their recent grand tour episode ‘Scandinavian flick’ and as someone who’s been in a sideways spin crash like that, let me tell you my heart dropped when I saw that it took me completely by surprise. It’s an episode I’d recommend!

The trick to bring mays Evo out the lake was legit, Hammond has a new love of “winching” where you purposely “crash” or place a car into a position it’s stuck just to get it back out again

He had an accident while participating in a rally in Switzerland, the vehicle burned after he crashed it. The watch he had was a swiss one who was later found and send back in a transparent case saying something along the lines of : made in zwitzerland, "perfected" by a british, because it survived the crash.

Axle Tramp mainly used to happen with the old fifties and sixties, leaf (cart) sprung stuff. You'd put your boot down and instead of going forwards the axle would wind backwards with the springs going S shaped. for better traction and to counteract this, things like Anti Tramp bars were fitted under the springs to tame it, holding the axle upright. There's horsepower and there's torque, torque is more usable. Of course, a decent power to weight ratio is important so you find a lot of modern stuff has weight savings everywhere, even plastic (not glass) headlights! They can be a pain as glass is a lot clearer and stays that way. The lacquer used to make the plastic clearer usually yellows after a few years.
@easterdeer
@easterdeer Год назад
He said "axle tramp". Axle tramping is what the car is doing when it's hopping up the steep incline. Something to do with the weight of the car shifting onto and off from the back wheel axle when going up steep slopes. Never heard of it before but very neat :D
@albertjarvis9511
@albertjarvis9511 Год назад
Axle tramp is the axle casing trying to rotate rather than the wheels pulling the vehicle,it happens with leaf springs winding up. Transit vans used to do it alot.

Odd that you say the big car manufacturers are Japanese and German. James May did two seasons of a show (top gear spinoff ) called Cars of the People. He started one episode by claiming “If you want to win at cars, you must first lose at war!”. The episode compared the German and Japanese car industry with that of US and UK, both of which have significantly declined over the years. Detroit was a key focal point as you can imagine.

Hi Connor, in answer to your snorkel question, the engine requires air to mix with fuel so it can be ignited, if you get water in there it will kill the engine, so you can install a snorkel above the car to keep it going even in flood water.

I've heard that Americans are generally more disposable with their cars, replacing them more often. While europeans own their cars for much longer. So we just have different attitudes as consumers, and this affects how manufacturers make cars for us. Regulations are important too, this means more vs less potential cutting corners in production to chase profits.
@jameswilliamson7140
@jameswilliamson7140 Год назад
There are these things called corners in the rest of the worlds roads (the u.s don't have them) which means we have to build cars that can go in circles easier ✌🏻

US cars were only really semi-known in the past, and thats because they were absolutely huge with ridiculously large engines that gave surprisingly little power and were famous for being made with materials made to look durable, but not actually be durable. As soon as petrol started to get expensive and car manufactures were prioritizing fuel saving, easy maintenance and accessibility the US cars pretty much got wiped off the market outside the US (apart from Ford which was already doing that before to an extent). In regards to sport cars, US manufacturers rarely participated in European races, where the vast majority of them occurred or originate from (again, Ford tried). Racing in different countries in Europe made the manufacturers popular and prestigious. There are so many companies that were once at the peak of sports cars / luxury cars thanks to racing but now you barley hear about them at all or have completely changed

While big wheels and high suspension do improve a car's of road handling. The Fiat makes a fantastic cheap little of roader because of its extremely light weight and short wheelbase. In the hands of a skilled driver it'll go almost as far as a real cross country vehicle for a fraction of the price.

The axle tramp is usually caused by leaf springs twisting from the torque of the wheels and causing it to jump like that. I believe Americans call it wheel hop. It can still happen if you get an American car (a common mistake buyers in the US make) without individual wheel suspension (though they have caught up a bit, they prefer money over safety still).

The reason america doesn't make good cars is because they make them as cheaply as possible to maximise profits but at the expense of quality. I think that America is so terrible at creating good cars is because the designers only need to consider fat people driving along straight roads with very few turns and switchbacks - whereas countries like Italy have mountain roads such as The Stelvio and Alpe d' Huez

Regarding US car making, almost all of your engineers and scientists these days are H1B visa holders, it's higher than 80%. But your business is selling the cheapest product at the highest price. The end result is fairly poor quality overpriced crap. Europe realised a LONG time ago that we can't compete with China when it comes to cheap crap so we had to step up on quality and make really high premium quality cars. The Japanese are doing that as well but the US seems to focus on the US market where people will buy it because it was made in China and assembled in America which means it's "made in America".
