American Reacts to 1914 | Sainsbury's Ad | Christmas 2014 Reaction Video 

The Christmas truce of 1914 was a real event, absoutely incredible.

What makes it even more special is that this actually happened.

The London Irish still have a ball they used, it's in their regimental museum, it was shown on Q.I. with Stephen Fry.

This was not just an advert this really happened and Sainsbury’s were marking the centenary, all the profits for the chocolate was given to the British Legion. The troops were threatened with a court martial if it happened again.

Powerful. True story and very, very powerful. Gets me every time... lump in the throat and a tear to the eye.

The British Troops that brought the football into no mans land in that famous Christmas truce, was soldiers from the London Irish Regiment and they still have that exact football in there museum at there HQ in London. The sad truth is that ordinary men who joined up on both sides in the first world war, didn't hate each other but as the survivors after the first world war said that they could of been best friends and that there was no animosity between each other. If you look at history between the UK and Germany we have only fought each other twice. WW1 and WW2 but apart from that we fought together and were Allies. Our Royal Family originally came from Germany, so we have close ties to Germany. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪

In the words of Captain Blackadder " more was achieved in one Christmas piss up, than in four years of war"...

I was working for Sainsbury’s at the time his advert was made the bar of chocolate sold out. The advert was made in England in trenches that were built for tv and film use. I’m a regular visitor to the battlefields of WW1 and other battlefields. Money from the sale of the bar of chocolate went to The Royal British Legion to help support British veterans.

Uk Christmas commercials are HUGE over here. Its a battle to be the best

And to think this actually happened aswell, remember doing a play about it when I was like 12 as a lover of history I got real emotional 😂

Pretty tragic that early in both wars this kind of thing happened, e.g. German u-boat picking up sailors from the sea and delivering them back to the UK, but both times it got stamped out by higher command. The general people and common soldiers of Germany and the UK have always had a lot in common, divided mainly by the more rabid political movements. I know that personally I have rarely met a German I didn't like, since I appreciate people who are blunt and honest.

My mum always said 'the devil never sleeps'. Jesus would have been so happy to see these men as friends, even for a short interlude. The High Command of both sides put a stop to this thereafter, can you imagine having to shoot men that you've played football with, realising that none of you want to be there? Mum also used to say: 'Governments make war, and the people have to fight them'. Wise and astute words, this ad always brings a lump to my throat. I like to think that love wins in the end, because its more powerful than any evil satan can throw at us. God bless everyone who reads this, accept Jesus into your hearts, and you will be given eternal life. New testament, book of John chapter 3, verse 16. 'For God loved the world so much, that He sent His Son to die on the cross, so that all who believe in Him, shall not die, but shall have eternal life. Amen ❤

I am nearly 60. When I was a lad. Christmas was much simpler. We had very little. We used to get a little train set. Or a scale electric. God I feel old. Lol.. but we was very thankful, of what we got. It was all about Jesus's birthday. We said grace before we eat. We went to midnight church. Life was uncomplicated simple. But that was back in the day. Now Christmas as gone all commercialised. Bigger the better. Last Christmas I paid £1000. For a ps5 for my grandson. (Private seller) over paid I know. But he really wanted this gismo. So went all out. I didn't like the idea of buying this because it is designed to keep a child indoors. You don't see children playing on the streets like you used to do. Looking at the window what's the children on their brand new Christmas bikes. It is a site sadly gone, I liked the old days.. Where was money was rare. But smiles was plenty.. sorry for the Rant squirrel

I read a book about WW! and it said, one of the main difficulties for the commanders was to keep the troops fighting. Just young guys who had no idea what was going on. The tragedy of shit governments

The WW1 Christmas Truce was between French and Scottish soldiers on one side and German soldiers on the other. Silent Night was played on the bagpipes by the Scots in response to the German soldiers singing. It was a Scot who broke no-man's-land to form the Christmas Truce... England (typically) hi-jacked the TRUTH and the story !.

Fun fact (????).... One of Hitler’s immediate peers during the war, Heinrich Lugauer, is quoted as having said: “When everyone was talking about the Christmas 1914 fraternization with the Englishmen, Hitler revealed himself to be its bitter opponent. He said, ‘Something like this should not even be considered.

The 2005 movie Joyeux Noel, depicts this very poignant encounter beautifully.

My great grandfather was on the front line 1914 Christmas Day. I have seen this advert countless times and I still find it moving. Check out the poppies at the Tower of London.
