The reason why the letters to Santa come to Canada is not because they are addressed to 'The North Pole', it is because of our postal code system (zip code for the US viewers). We use a Letter, Number, Letter ... Number, Letter, Number system (ie A1B 2C3) and the letters to Santa are H0H 0H0 (H zero H zero H zero) ... HO HO HO. I used to know where exactly they went to, but can't remember it right now, or if it had changed.

@@camilledextraze7104 Nope. All letters to Santa Claus are sent to the main post office in the closest major municipality in each province and, yes, volunteer workers reply to them. I am retired, and that is standard all across Canada. I myself used to volunteer to answer Santa letters. We'd all take a bundle home and personally read and reply to them. Years back we used to formulate each response personally but It's a standard form letter now ( in English and French) with a little personal add-on (sometimes) by the volunteer. This is still being done. They're not all sent to Montreal -- they'd be swamped, as we get thousands.

In the program I was doing we had three students from Germany and Netherlands, no matter how much we tried we could not get them to speak a word in their native language nor in any other language that they had learned - "I am in an English speaking location so I will only speak English to improve my English language skills". As for Canada being peaceful: it has never started a war in its history. However, it has never lost a war it has been invited to. Where I live our tap water is so good it exceeds the requirements for bottled water. We had a small restaurant bottling tap water to sell to tourists. They actually put the information on the bottle with a suggestion that if they kept the bottle the tourist could re-fill it each day (either from the tap or at the restaurant) and the restaurant would refund them in full if they returned the empty bottle. (Tourists tend to throw bottles away instead of recycling.) We are very good at passive aggressive.

Canadian here. Our bank notes/bills do have raised bumps for people with vision impairment or who are blind but those bumps aren’t actually Braille. (I just checked this on the website of the Bank of Canada.). Many sight-impaired people do not read Braille so it was decided to, instead, add a different number of squares of bumps to each denomination. Also, each value of bill is a different colour to help the visually impaired differentiate the bills. The large, dark numbers on the bills also help people will limited vision. Impressive, huh? I think the raised bumps have been on our bills for several decades.

It is surprising that Canada is considered the most educated considering that higher education isn't free like in some European countries. I think the reason is that education is still reasonably affordable and students don't have to get too far in debt. I think it is important to say that public education is taken seriously by most Canadians and is quite well funded. This funding begins with primary and secondary education, even before students go to college or university.

For someone who says he grew up in Ottawa, our national capital, I was shocked that he said Canada's "Confederation began in the 1880s." Canada's Confederation, the birth of our nation, was on July 1st, 1867. One other egregious error was his claim that Canadian actor James Doohan (Scotty on the original Star Trek) fought at Vimy Ridge, Canada's most famous World War I battle. However, Doohan hadn't been born when the Vimy Ridge battle took place. Doohan did serve in the Canadian Army during World War II and was involved in the "D-Day" invasion landing at Juno Beach, among other combat actions.

@@sarahsnowewith respect the burning of Washington DC, if there were any militias present, they would have come from Lower Canada -but most historians agree that the invasion and occupation of the US Capitol was by British marines. Remember, Napoleon had been beaten, freeing up a lot of British military power which was redeployed to the American theatre. In fact, British preoccupation with Napoleon was one of the reasons -along with the presumption that US expats would welcome the invasion of Upper Canada-Madison thought declaring war on British North America would be successful. Fort York, now Toronto, was destroyed in an American raid. This was the supposed reason for Britain to burn down Washington DC. But by far the worst property damage and loss of life happened on the Niagara Peninsula-Newmarket, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St Catherines, Lindy’s lane, &c. Many of the defenders were expat Americans. Colonists in Upper Canada -especially in the Niagara and southwest regions-saw the most action in the war of 1812. This region was heavily settled by American expats, originally by United Empire Loyalists (like my ancestors) who crossed the Niagara river in 1780 when rebels appeared to be winning the American Rebellion (which lasted until 1783 when Britain finally departed New York City, in good order, which it had occupied for the entire war) or, starting just a few years after the Treaty of Paris recognized the Thirteen Colonies as the independent USA, by expat Americans seeking cheap land. President Madison imagined that these expat Americans (not the UELs) homesteading in British North America (that is, Upper Canada) were so numerous that they would welcome US invaders. In fact, expats as well as British settlers defended their farms vigorously. A scant few tried to proselytize rebellion among the settlers but were either driven off, deported to Australia, or hung for treason. American invasions of Lower Canada in 1775 and 1813 were both repulsed in two quick battles. By far the heaviest fighting in the War of 1812 was on the Niagara Peninsula in Upper Canada, spilling over into New York State from time to time-mostly for retaliatory raids to burn down towns like US soldiers did to Canadian farms. Britain captured Michilimackinac Island between Lakes Huron and Michigan from the US on July 12, 1812; British captured Fort Detroit in August 1812 but after the US navy took control of Lake Erie British troops with their Indian allies retreated in advance of US invasion up the Thames Valley in 1813 where, in Moraviantown, a Delaware Indian Reserve (The Delaware were also refugees from the American Rebellion and escaped from Ohio Territory into Upper Canada in 1782) . Here, in 1813, the Great Shawnee Chief Tecumseh, fighting on the British side, was killed. The Americans were victorious because the Indian contingent collapsed when they learned about Tecumseh’s death. US troops immediately returned to Fort Detroit. In 1814, British marines captured Washington DC and ransacked the Capitol for a few days, burning the White House, the Library of Congress and the Capitol building among other buildings before departing. British marines attacked New Orleans but were repulsed; in fact the Treaty of Paris had already been signed but neither of the combatants had not been appraised of it yet. Nevertheless, Americans realized they were about to be whipped from every direction and sued for peace.

Yonge Street in Toronto, Canada is often referred to as the "longest street in the world" because of its historical and geographical significance. While it is not technically the longest continuous street globally, it holds the title due to its considerable length and the fact that it runs through a significant portion of Ontario. Yonge Street was named after Sir George Yonge, a British Secretary of War. The street was first surveyed in 1793 and became a vital route for early settlers and traders in the region. It extends from the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto and stretches northward for approximately 86 kilometers (53 miles) to the town of Innisfil. Beyond Innisfil, the road continues under different names. The significance of Yonge Street is not solely based on its length but also its historical importance. It played a crucial role in the development and expansion of Ontario, serving as a primary transportation route for goods, people, and communication during the early settlement of the province. Over time, it has grown to become a vibrant urban corridor with diverse neighborhoods, commercial areas, and cultural landmarks. While there are longer roads globally, Yonge Street's distinction as the "longest street in the world" is mainly associated with its influence on the growth and development of Toronto and its surrounding areas.

If you are referring to the professions, the real reason is that the governing bodies of provincially constituted professional organizations, such as those of lawyers and doctors, severely restrict the number of foreign-trained individuals who are allowed to practise, presumably to protect their own in the marketplace (Doug Ford promises to deal with this.). As a lawyer of 41 years, I am well aware of this reality. The requirements include a period of clerkship, usually after writing board examinations, which are prohibitively expensive for most immigrants. Should a physician candidate jump these hurdles, he/she/they must then secure a residency. The number of vacancies available to foreign-trained doctors is small and further limited by specialization. All of these requirements are not only expensive, but time-consuming, preventing would-be candidates from even applying, since they have to work to support themselves and their families. I knew a brilliant Russian cardiologist who ran the concession in a bowling alley - he could not afford to requalify. Ironically, he had to regularly revive members of senior bowling leagues who suffered heart attacks during tournaments! It is ridiculous that this discrimination is allowed to continue in the face of our severe doctor shortage. Compare this to the fact that universities rely on the academic fees paid by international medical students, and set aside a significant number of spots for them in their programmes, thereby denying entry to qualified Canadian students. As far as lawyers are concerned, a South African-trained lawyer had to take the (then) Law Society of Upper Canada (Ontario) to court for a declaration that its restriction on admitting foreign-trained lawyers to the provincial bar was unconstitutional. As a result, admission is available to all, but, again, after writing a series of examinations, and articling. Those who are successful usually go on to work with members of their ethnic/cultural/linguistic communities who would otherwise lack legal representation. The medical profession could learn something from this.
@denisegreene8441
@denisegreene8441 Год назад
Hmmm. He was such a brilliant cardiologist he couldn't come on a transfer? Again... the training is different. Our neighbour's was a general surgeon in India. He had to write a couple of exams on arriving in Canada and was allowed to practice as a pathologist ( dead people) . He went back to school for nursing and said he learnt more in his first year in NURSING in Canada then in all his training in India. So ask yourself. Do you want the Dr fully trained or 1/ 4 trained. He loves being a nurse. Makes good money and is proud of his choices. Just because someone has a degree does not mean they are fully trained. If we don't keep the standards high then we deserve to become a 3rd world country. I know plenty of vets from India who are better trained than MD from the same country. Why you might ask? Because gender doesn't come into play in the training.

I heard something on a science program about the 'missing gravity' and from what I remember, it had to do with a decrease in the density of the mantle in that area. The effect is not noticeable as far as we would feel it, but it is measurable and falls outside of any normal fluctuation. It is something like: the average gravity measured anywhere is something like +- .1% (guessing here for demonstration purposes) and in that area of Hudson Bay it is -.8% (again guessing, I don't know the exact numbers). So it is no where near 'life changing' or even usable. If you stepped on a scale anywhere else in the world and weighed yourself to be 220lbs (100kg) and then weighed yourself in Hudson Bay, you would be something like 219lbs .. maybe (it is too early to do the math, and I haven't had my morning coffee yet).

Remember that movie, Ice Age? Well, then you’ll remember that the world once went through a phase where the entire planet was covered in ice. During the ice age, the entire country of Canada was covered by a huge glacier known as the Laurentide Ice Sheet. This particular glacier was so heavy that it squeezed down on the rocks of the earth and held it there. When the ice finally started melting, the earth bounced back (or at least it tried to). But it took its own sweet time which led to the area in Hudson Bay getting a teeny bit messed up. Since the mass of rock decreased, so did gravity. And voila! That’s how we got such an irregularity.

#1 - Residents of Churchill leave their cars doors open in case of polar bears. Actually, that's true in many northern communities, and it's not just for protection against polar bears. Sometimes it gets so cold, people will step into a neighbour's house just to warm up for a couple of minutes on their way home. They'll have a short visit, maybe have a warm drink, then say "thank you" and move on.

Most places in Canada do have nice water. There are a few places where it might taste a bit funny. It used to be a running gag that Regina, Saskatchewan's water is bad because it's bog water, or something. I haven't been there in over a decade, so I don't know if that's been fixed. BUT there are some towns and communities up north that don't have safe drinking water. Part of it is because it's difficult to get up there, and even in parts the only way in is via plane. But another reason is that the government doesn't care enough to put the money towards getting there, and building up the infrastructure there. It'll cost a pretty penny.

I really enjoyed your videos and comments plus learning more about the world. Yes the water is a bit different in each province and area you live in. The education are very important and true information is checked and allowed for sharing with the world. You should learn about the history of the Canadian military and how we changed over years. I did get several tickets for being a good driver and citizen.

We are the most educated country in the world because we do not charge outrageous amounts of money to go to university as is the practice in the U.S. Even universities are money-makers there. The U.S. is totally transactional. It is the "What's in it for me." country. Lighten up and educate your children.

Gezz man, even if it’s true, was it necessary to be so rude 😠. Sorry guys, even in Canada there is the odd one out.
