Watch “What is AFL” it’s kind of an Americans guide to AFL released by the AFL. It gives a fairly good overview of the game to someone who is new to it. Once you get more interested there are more in depth videos about it to dive into.

You have to bounce the ball when running every 16 metres.its difficult when running because you have to bounce it slightly ahead of yourself.if you are running with the ball and you get caught by opposition player its a penalty called holding the ball so the player that caught you gets a free kick

They bounce the ball for the same reason basketball does. It creates turn over opportunities and adds a level of difficulty. AFL is nothing like Rugby, but NFL was a direct evolution from Rugby. Aussie Rules Football is the oldest Codified Football in the world. It has been around since the 1850's.

Yes every 15 steps you have too bounce the ball. If you kick the ball through the middle post it’s 6 points and the 2 outside post is worth 1 point

for those searching comments 18 players per side = 3 reserves (36 on the field at a time) 4x20min quarters + injury time they have to bounce the ball every 15m (16yards) or less if running with it (like dribbling in basketball) can kick or handpass only (no throwing) the field is 150m long on an oval field (~170yards) and roughly 100m across at the narrow part there are components from lots of sports you can shepherd your teammates like NFL as long as its on the ball though historically fighting in backplay was only frowned on not illegal) any stopped of play without advantage is restarted by the umpire with a jump ball simialar to a B-ball game there are 4 goal posts; between the centre 2 is 6pts (known as a goal), hitting the post or in the outter goal posts is 1pt (known as a behind) a score card might be 10goals 6 behinds and written as follows 10.6.66 kicking the ball and someone catching it is called mark; the player can play on or take a moment to set up a new play (similar to a down in nfl) contact can only be between knees and shoulders

Nothing like Rugby whatsoever.....Lacrosse is closer to Aussie Rules Footy. 2Hrs on the field each week....full 360 degree motion,,non-stop 30min quarters. With 200 to 250 pound guys running 10miles per games whilst getting bumped, tackled, scragged all game. They kick the ball like a QB throwing it...and they sometimes catch the ball by standing on the shoulders of others (teammates & opponents) jumping for the same catch. Teams score around 80-120pts per games..so lots of scoring (goals)...and it's been around for over 150 years (before NFL, NBA etc)...Best sport on the Planet

AFL players are the single greatest athletes in the world. They have greater stamina then Soccer player, equal or better vertical then Basketball players, better hand and foot skills then an NFL wide receiver. The pure brutality of Rugby players and the speed of track and field competitors. AFL players are seriously unrivalled. Just look up the training routine of Travis Boak of Port Adelaide Football Club.

Head hits are NOT ON. Some of these top players will run 21 Kms in a game. Your question about bouncing the ball - must be bounced every 15 metres, or get rid of ny legal means.(Handball, or Kick) Free kick to opposition if you don't. Tackling can only be legal if it is between the shoulders and waist.
@adrienneeast1013
@adrienneeast1013 Год назад
it's actually an oval shape. yes you can tackle so long as between shoulders and knee's, no pads only mouth guard. the game used to be a lot rougher, AFL is NOT rugby the rules are different, look up AFL rules posted by the AFL. You must bounce or pass or kick every 16 yards. Kick between the 2 large posts are 6 points hitting one of the 2 large posts (called a goal) or through the small post is 1 point (called a behind). when they jump and grab the ball it's called a mark. The shortest player is about 5 foot 8 the tallest is well over 6 foot (basketball size). 18 players on the field and 4 on the interchange bench. 4 quarters of 20min and the field is almost twice the size of an NFL field with a fooball stadium able to hold and does hold over 100,000 supporters.
@scottymorrice5416
@scottymorrice5416 11 месяцев назад
You have to bounce the ball every 15 meters (otherwise you get penalised for carrying the ball) it's legal to tackle or side bump an opponent from the shoulders to the hip area when they are in possession of the ball! It's legal to jump on somebody's back when you are catching (speccy or marking) the ball! In rugby you can only pass the ball backwards where as in Aussie Rules it can go anywhere! We have a few names for it here & that Footy, Football or Aerial Ping Pong! If you get the ball (by kicking it) through the center posts you get 6 points & if you kick it between 1 of the center posts & the smaller outer posts it's only 1 point!

@seanelijah3419
@seanelijah3419 Год назад
every kick is strategic if they mark it it's a free kick from where they marked it and who ever had the ball must go forward without losing possession with kicking and hand balling with a closed fist if you lose possession it goes into free play and anyone with the ball can be tackled ifthe take a big mark on the shoulders and don't mark it correctly then it's a free kick to the opposition most likely for push in the back which you can't do there are basically 3 main positions The back line ( defence) The Mid Field (centre) The Forward Line (offense) that's only the basics it's a really hard game and extremely complex it's so hard to win a PREMIERSHIP

You have to bounce the ball ever 10 yards when you run with it. The point of the game is to kick it between the two big stick ( goal posts ). This is worth 6 point's if the ball goes between the big post and little post it's worth 1 point ,called a behind.

In rugby and American football, attacking players are faced with a wall of defenders they have to get the ball past. AFL doesn't have that. There are defenders of course, but the ground is huge and defenders could be spread out all over the place. There's a lot more space to run, so it would be too easy for the fastest player to tuck the ball under his arm and bolt up the length of the ground. Making them bounce the ball every 15 metres (which is an approximation, as its impossible to accurately measure during play) simply adds that level of difficulty and probably slows them down a little, too. It'd be hard to maintain control of a bouncing ball while sprinting as fast as you can.

These are the best legal tackles and bumps, there are a lot of videos showing the... less legal ones which may interest you lmao. Modern AFL has a big emphasis on protecting the head (and rightly so), the AFL doesn't want to promote the hits that knock people out on their channel but you can find them out there. Check out the What is AFL video from the same channel as this video for a good quick rundown of the rules. Also if you're a fan of NFL check out Top 50 Marks All-time for some people getting Mossed Something that's not mentioned in the rules video however is that Aussie Rules football, although very free flowing, is a game of free kicks and stoppages (ball ups and throw ins). Every catch from a kick and every foul is a free kick. If you tackle someone who's holding the ball and they've had prior opportunity to get rid of it it's a free kick to the tackler. That's why a lot of these chase down tackles are in this video. Although not being as brutal, if you pull someone down to the ground who's trying to run away from you it's a free kick for "holding the ball" so they're important. If you're looking for individual player highlights the guy you said looks like you with the dreads was a great player before injury. Look up Nic Natinui and keep and eye on the scoreboard because he kicks some game winners I feel like although NFL has pads, it just leads to the tackler throwing the heads into people's jaws which is hella dangerous so they got some tough mfs over there. Great reaction, looking forward to watching you learn about one of the greatest sports in the world :)
