At the 11 minute mark when you said that was wrong. Those two player's that were involved are actually brothers.

What you are seeing in that video are what are called Hip and Shoulder hits. As you noticed, you use the hip and shoulder to take out the player. These shouldn't be confused with tackles, a tackle and a hip and shoulder are two different things in AFL.

Absolute credit to whoever made this video because they picked mostly the clean hip and shoulders of our great game haha because this is not even close to the crazy stuff haha. Best game in the world.

One contact you said was not warranted where a player in Blue hit a player in white and blue hoops were actually brothers playing for different teams. The one that was hit pushed his brother but was given a weeks suspension for that action. Both later played in the same team and are legend's of our game.

You have to be able to run between 10 -15 km per game . There are 18 players per team on the field ( plus 4 on the bench) so at any one time there are 36 players on the field.

The rules in the older clips didn’t protect the head as much. Now if make any contact with the head (even if it’s incidental) usually means they get suspended for at least a match or 2

Each team has 18 players on the field, at one time; and have 4 interchange players on the bench. The game is played over 4 quarters, each quarter generally going to around 30 minutes; individual players can travel anywhere between 10 and 15 km per game.

AFL teams have 24 players in a game the NFL have 46 the AFL players are trained in every skill needed in the game as opposed to the NFL where people are far more singular focused in the part of the game they play. Also the playing area for AFL is twice that of the NFL. I would recommend you search for (What is AFL? Aussie Rules Explained) and (AFL biggest hits- Here comes the boom)

Soft tissue injuries to areas like hamstrings and achilles are common, a lot of ankle, foot and knee injuries. Things like ACL tears, osteoitis pubis, plantar fasciitis, and every now and again, someone might be hospitalised or suffer a compound fracture... a lot of shoulder reconstructions and AC joint issues... just to let you know a few of the more common injuries players tend to have.

Skill and great technique allows hard play without injuries. Alot of contact sports are predominately brut strength and not enough emphasis on perfect technique throughout. These guys are perfect athletes having to do it all and be just about perfect at it. Sprint, long distance running, high jumping, aggression, ball handeling(including dribbling the ball), heavy bodily contact, team work, they are super fit given they are on the field for 90mins involved in a very fast paced game.

Because NFL is covered in plastic and padding, you have no idea how big these guys are. The average height of an AFL player is 6ft and about 100kg+ they also run an average of 15km per game over a game, only lasting 80mins on a field three times the size of an NFL field.

oh! hahaha! That was me previously. The game is trying to be 'cleaned up' due to concussion, etc. Nothing on the big hits I grew up with in the 70s & 80s.

There’s still plenty of injuries in AFL but because kids learn the game with no padding they learn to hit and be hit more safely rather than leading with their head like NFL players tend to

NFL hits are typically more "explosive" in nature. But the only real similarity with rugby is that it's intended to be a continuous game, rather than stop-start like NFL. Just all go from hooter to hooter. No defensive line, no offensive line, no special positions. So with exception of interchange and periods of play there's no real rest time.

There is no off side rule in Aussie rules so you can be hit from any angle. We call European football soccer too. Good reaction video.

Australian rules football (definitely NOT rugby), is played at 360 degrees so the hits can come from anywhere.. makes it a very fast sport. Incidentally, it is this sport where the Australian punters in the NFL come from (not rugby).

As other people have noted the game has been cleaned up a lot in the last twenty years. If you want to see the bad old days search for something like afl enforcers a line in the sand.

At 1.20 the player gets up and is ready to play on.

Now this is a real mans game......

Those players do not let the lack of padding hold them back, they go at the ball 100%. When you live in a country where everything wants to kill you.... you don't need padding to play sport. Also the players are not small, most are over 6 foot.

NFL players lead with their head a lot more because they have helmets. By playing your entire jnr football without helmets you learn to tackle and attack in a different way and there for less concussions but it is always going to happen in a physical sport that is as quick as this

You notice in the old ones them guys are using there elbows to the head

Player size is anywhere fro 5 foot 8 to over 7 foot. They are fast, strong and run over 10 miles in a match 2 hours long.

The helmet is to stop skull fracture, the problem is it probably makes concussion worse, which is a greater, long-term health-threat.

SPEED KILLS, those players may look smaller but they only appear that way because of the bigger players most of these players are well over 100kg and all are fast and strong.

Aussie rules players use no padding at all, need to have insane endurance and mids/wings will routinely run (at pace) 15 kms (9 miles) a game.

It's called a "hospital pass" when you kick it to someone and open them up to being laid out. It's part of the game, but generally it's considered poor form to go for the man instead of the ball.

The game has changed a lot in the last 20 years or so has become a much more athletic game for lack of a better term used to be 18 on the field with 1 reserve, now with many more interchange s and 4 reserve s makes it much less a battle of attrition like it used to be. Pretty much used to be as long as ya didn't kill anyone just about anything goes. Much faster game now generally to. Things like the play with the rucks and rovers has changed a lot too. The positional play has changed a whole lot.

The hits come from all angles. You know you're gonna get hit you just don't know when.

Aussie Rules doesn't have an offside rule, and you can pass in any direction. Also, you can dropping the ball doesn't matter. You can't do that in rugby.

I don't think they have too many more or less injuries than any other sport but it does happen. We call soccer soccer like the US does its europe that calls it football.

saying the hips are not as big as NFL is slightly true, especially in the modern era. But remember these guys dont where padding or helmets like the NFL players. So it still hurts way more.

No disrespect to NFL players, but they wouldn't last 5 minutes playing Australian football, because they don't have the fitness or the ability to handle the hits that can come from any direction on the field.

NFL you know where the hits are coming from. You can brace for it with armour. In AFL you get hit from 360 degrees, when your not ready for it, with no padding or helmets. Hurts way more when you can’t brace. Like to see an nfl player run 12+ kms a game, take big hits, lay tackles, be able to kick accurately. It’s a far more skilful game. I like nfl but it’s essentially red rover with a ball where you get a break every ten seconds.

AFL is not rugby ,it has no touch downs or trys. Australian football started in the 1850s .Some AFL clubs are some of the oldest football clubs in the world of any code of football still operating.

Its more like full field, full contact basket ball with kicking. The guys are basketball sized but need to be able to run 20km a game. No NFL/power athletes could compete in this game, its a different type of sport.

I was at the game @10:26 and it was blatantly a case of playing the man instead of the ball. Steven May copped sooooo much lip while leaving for the sheds at half time. He should have been embarrassed with such a cheap shot. Especially on one of the nicest blokes in the sport.

Aussie rules football isn't like any other sport in the World, it's not comparable to anything and it's the best game in the World and does require the best endurance Athletes of any World team sport.

He average pro afl player can cover 10 to 13 mile a game so can’t be the 300 pound nfl linesmen are.

ABSOLUTELY NOT rugby. Aussie rules was codified and competition began on 1858 and in doing so pre-dates soccer, both rugby codes, American Football, basketball and baseball.

From about 3:00 these are the good old days of football when the head wasn’t protected as much.
