I find most English speaking people understand British irony when they think "this person is British" in the same way we all understand American patriotism when we keep in mind that the person is from the US. It's a testament to the bonds between the English speaking countries of the world that we want to understand each other.

This is his "Pub Landlord" character who is an exaggeration of a certain type of British 'Patriot.' He's actually an Oxford educated History graduate. He did a very good series called "Why Does Everybody Hate the English"

I'm torn on if allowing The Pub Landlord access to Al's knowledge of history makes him more funny due to the irony of him knowing all this stuff, or if it weakens the satire because the type of person he's playing is usually quite ignorant. Can't decide.

Al Murray is a interesting Comedian his acts involve a character he created the 'Pub Land Lord' and all his routines are presented from that guy the loud mouth know it all, the thing is... the actual comedian is a really smart guy who has Degrees from Oxford in... history, which of course this routine is perfect for.

He's also aristocracy and comes from a very upper class background. In fact some criticised his act for being a case of punching down on the working class. Whereas Murray has always maintained that the character is a tribute to working class Brits, not a mockery.

A considerable amount of British comedians have an impressive education. Oxford and Cambridge have turned out many many comedians who have formed the gold standard of British comedy. A lot of these people actually met in the comedy clubs in these communities and went on to perform together.

It’s only satire when the audience recognise it as satire. He knows exactly what he’s doing and all sorts of isms have been defended on the basis that it’s only comedy and ‘obviously I don’t mean it!’. I’d have more respect for him if he was just honest about it.

England is the same size of Alabama roughly give or take a few miles . So to say we had an empire covering most of the world is quite an a achievement. But we only did what other countries were trying to do at the same time but we were good at it.

You kind of need to know that Al Murray, when he is doing his stand up, portrays a character who believes Britain is great. It's not racist it's more he plays up stereotypes of other countries. Al Murray is a very learned individual. I've seen him present factual programs about history and his knowledge is immense. He takes it very seriously but presents it to the lay person with a hint of sarcasm and a slight wink and a nod. That keeps you engaged, and is a fantastic way to absorb some of that knowledge...

That two fingered gesture you used at the end - we have a similar gesture in England but it doesn't mean peace. It was a sign to the French after the battle of Agincourt (1415) that our archers still had their draw fingers so could continue fighting (the French would remove those two fingers if ever they captured an archer so he could never fight again). It is considered an insult and remains popular to this day among the more rowdy elements.

My Dad visited the Royal Armoury in Leeds a few years ago and Al Murray basically followed him around the museum. Wherever he went, there was Al!

There is a fantastic, historical accurate and funny book called "All the countries we've invaded and the few we never got round to": I think Al may have got some of his info from that As for France, it is a matter of UK foreign policy that we should sink the French navy at regular intervals - even when they are our allies (yes we sank the French navy in WW2), in fact following Brexit it is probably about time we sank it again

Well, the French did supply the RN with more ships than our own shipyards during the Naploenic wars... They didn't want to, but it kept happening.

Well we gotta stay match fit somehow dont we...and technically we only sunk the ships so the germans didn't get hold of them as at the time they wad the only modern part of the French forces...they where woefully unequipped to deal with the vastly technology advanced germans

Great reaction. A lot of people commenting on Al Murray being an Oxford graduate but it is the case that very many British comedians are well-educated. Worth taking a look at are Stewart Lee and Bill Bailey for very different yet erudite ways of making people laugh. Bill's humour is easily accessible, Stewart Lee's less so.

@@milesalpha1 Wow! Thank you for the list of folks to check out. Yeah, I don't care for a good many of the American comedians. I like Chris Rock and Chapelle, but past them two, it seems to be comedy has dropped off here in the past few years. Loved Hedburg and Carlin, the others as well but the 2 mentioned especially. I'll have to check out the American ones you mentioned as well. Thank you.

It should be remembered that we were also colonized by the British, our population was 95% British, the same British citizens who wanted their Army, the British army to protect them from the French but didn’t want to pay a Penny towards it, so they sneakily went to the same French and asked them to help stab Britain in the back, not for principle but for greed. The Colonists were not downtrodden as claimed, each of the so called founding fathers were multi millionaires at today’s values, Washington who called himself an English Gentleman swore allegiance to the King, until he though he would have to pay tax on his income, that’s when he broke his pledge and turned traitor. Washington owned over 100 slaves at the time of the war he owned 200 by the time he became the President. An American Hero or a dishonorable turncoat. Ouch, the truth hurts when actually told as it was.

Indeed, Trever - the so-called 'revolution' was not some spontaneous act of rebellion by the 'oppressed' People as a whole, but rather one by the Colonial ELITES (who had also suffered the indignity of several insurrections in the decades before 1776) against the Crown. Various reasons, of course - but the fact that the latter had signed a treaty with the Native Americans, promising no further expansion west of the Appallachians may also have had something to do with it !

To be fair Britain gave most of its empire back. In the last 30 years we have had several nations ask to rejoin the Commonwealth (which is what the Empire was renamed to) Anyone can leave of course, but it’s rare any nation does.

I was lucky enough to see Greg Giraldo live at the Toomler English language comedy night (in Amsterdam) years ago when on holiday. I had never heard of him but he had me in stiches. An excellent comic and much missed. Rest In Peace, Greg.
