Hallo my friend. I do not know how old are you. But I am a child of the 80s. And with this reaction you bring me back to my youth. I knew every song. And it is pity that every song is only seconds to hear. If you want to feel the great musical time of the 80s you must hear all this music much longer. Ok.... than your Video would be hours long...😆 But thank you for the reaction that brings all the sweet mamorys back to me. Many greatings from Duisburg in

3:55 That confused face is priceless. "Da Da Da", by the band "Trio", was one the songs from the movement called "Neue Deutsche Welle" - "New German Wave". This didn't designate a single consistent style, but would encompass all sorts of genres, with the main common denominator that they were all "modern" music performed in German. As you saw in this and other videos of this kind, Germany is a very international market when it comes to modern popular music, and a lot of German artists did and still do create English songs. But during the NDW, there was a huge influx of new artists who wanted to make German music _German_ again. A lot of that stuff was highly experimental, and a lot of these artists had only a bright moment of fame. "Da Da Da" was one of these "experimental" songs. Very minimalistic, weird... the reference to Dadaism isn't accidental. Frank Zander on the other hand was a well established musician, presenter and actor from the more comedic field. Because "da da da" is reminding of baby talk, he made a parody song in that line. Think of Weird Al Jankovich.

EAV = Erste Allgemene Verunsicherung was or is a austrian Band. They processed serious topics, sometimes humorously, in their songs and they were able to do it fantastically.

A blast from my past. Synthesizers were big things in the eighties, they became affordable for normal people. Pioneers are the german band Kraftwerk. You can also see the influence of MTV from aroun the middle of the eighties onward.

It was a great mix of music styles. Going into House and Techno at the end of the decade. Love the 80s !

Fascinating. The majority of these was a hit in the UK too, and many in the USA (though not necessarily at the same time, as back then there was often a delay of weeks or sometimes even months between a song being a hit in one country and then in another, as a comparison of the UK and US charts of this time will show too). The video age of the '80s meant English began to dominate popular music in many non-English countries, as is clearly seen with this chart. Most of these acts originated from the UK in particular, due to the close proximity to the European market: Jona Lewie, Shakin' Stevens, David Bowie, New Order, Boy George, Queen, Nik Kershaw, Talk Talk, Depeche Mode, Limahl, Princess, Midge Ure, Pet Shop Boys, Bananarama, Erasure, The Housemartins, S'Express, Billy Idol, M/A/R/R/S, Black, T'Pau, Fine Young Cannibals, Holly Johnson and Lisa Stansfield! Some of those acts were of course big in the USA too, but others were much less known across the Atlantic despite being huge in the UK (and often Europe and/or Australasia too). And yes, as you noted, the 1980s was the era of the synth/keyboard - it brought a great explosion in creativity and variety of sounds, and for me, was one of the reasons the decade was full of such great music, especially up until about 1987. After then the quality and variety in the mainstream charts dipped IMO as the Euro-dance sound took over, as represented in that list by tracks like "Pump Up The Jam", and was later followed by house, acid, techno and other club sounds.

These lists are always based on some sort of ranked charts - sales mostly, though it might be radio coverage. Thus the No.1 songs are something special... these are the songs that managed to reached the utmost top. But for the No.2 tracks... this is just telling us that this was their hightest postion in the charts, and that they never managed to reach the top. They still could have been top 10 hits for months though.

Love your Reactions, you're a very pleasant Guy. EAV's Songs are very funny, they don't do Blackfacing there either, as you might have guessed, it's a Penguin. Please forgive me for my poor English, which I taught myself for the most part.😅

It's funny that I knew EVERY song from this and the previous #1s compilation but probably wouldn't recognize at least 90% of songs in any similar 2000s or 2010s compilation.

8:30 Going out on a limb there, but the different looks of the videos (USA / Europe) MIGHT have something to do with the difference in video signal / display norms. In the USA the NTSC standard was used, whereas West Germany, the UK and France had PAL (or PAL-SECAM)-based tv video standards. PAL has a „crisper“ signal. Also, you can spot a difference between studio lighting, usually combined with taped video vs open air with (mostly) natural light and recorded on film.

The Difference: At This time Germany has had only on official Chart List (Selling of Singles /Single CDs) - The US had the R&B Charts, the Pop Charts the Rock and Roll Charts, the Black Music Charts, the Country Music charts etc. Therefore sometimes in Germany sometimes a pop song wins, sometimes a Schlager (Easy listening Granny Musik) wins, sometimes Dance music etc. Thats why the Charts where so diverse.

Funny thing, that some of the songs are the best known songs of the artists, but they never managed to hit the number 1 spot in germany. But i remember, that many of these that only managed to get to number 2 in all of germany, were many weeks number 1 in my homestate of bavaria.

5:05 I think that's usually referred to as a keytar or sth like that. Yeah, the invention of the analog synth pretty much kickstarted the 80s, musically. Or at least I'm pretty sure I heard Hans Zimmer say something along those lines. Or was it the guy who composed the Stranger Things soundtrack? Sth along those lines. Also interesting to see which ones you know and which ones you don't. E.g. I thought everyone in the world knew who Enya was. Probably one of the best selling New Age artists of all time. Not that I'd be into it but it felt to me like everyone's dad had a record of hers around the year 2000.

Just like America Germany has their own version of the Billboard. Probably should have gotten a heads up that some german songs can be quite - interesting - to say the least. Goldener Reiter by Joachim Witt is an excellent song. I recommend checking it out. The video "representates" the state of going into a Bezirkskrankenhaus, or Insane Asylum. #1: That is a Synthesizer, the predecessor of the Keyboard #2: You mean the Keytar (Keyboard + Guitar) Americas list had enough love songs of its own.

"Nervenklinik" (lit: nerves clinic) instead of "Bezirkskrankenhaus". Which is just a county hospital. But, yes, it is an excellent song!

I'm sure, there are clips with strictly Songs from German artists (not necessarily lyrics) from all decades around. Would be interesting to see you react to that. **Be warned** though: A great deal of it will be Schlager, and that can be horrible. And yes, many Germans will know at least the classics, whether they wanted to or not😉

The music [text] from America ware and is still more Political Corrected than Europe, yes the clips ware newer and smoother from America but the text ware much softer, Yes, the last time you said “a lot of love songs”. You said it by a song of Phil Collins called “another day in paradise “, you must see the music clip, that is definitely not a love song, that let us see what we don’t look at as we say we live in paradise.

11:43 Given your academic background with regard to music, you might find the full version of the track „O.K.“ by Okay interesting. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-juT__vlc07g.html It was indeed a bit of a gumbo of soundbites, with a rather simplistic music track in the background and just two or three lines of new text serving as the refrain.
