Hopefully this will help to give me a better understanding of the Welsh culture as well as a glimpse into some of the awesome things going on in Cardiff. Being Cardiff born & bred I appreciate you reacting to Cardiff. Unfortunately on their trip to Cardiff they missed one of the best attractions, St Fagans Welsh Folk Museum, Its a bus ride from the City Centre but It's free to enter and a full day can be spent there with so much to see.

Fun fact welsh is one of the oldest living languages in Europe. It can be traced all the way back to the pre roman period and its amazing that it hasn't changed much, a fluent welsh speaker can read a piece of welsh text written in the 8th century and can pretty much understand what has been said. It's amazing how a language can be around 2000 years old and has stood the test of all the conquerings and even people trying to physically beat the language out of the people ( not offense English) and it has still continued to this day. If you ever go to Cardiff I recommend a visit to St Fagans National Museum of History, commonly referred to as St Fagans after the village where it is located, it is an open-air museum close to Cardiff chronicling the historical lifestyle, culture, and architecture of the Welsh people. Many traditional buildings have been moved there and reconstructed.

Cardiff has been my home all my life and yes you cannot go far without tripping over a castle or cathedral or 3. Most cities in the UK are on the coast because, like, it's an island. That aside, Cardiff used to have the largest docks in the world in the 19th century mostly due to the coal industry. Coal was mined north of Cardiff and transported via canals to the docks to be shipped around the world.

Wales is really underrated as it’s got so many beautiful places and landscapes, castles etc. I live in Bristol and it takes me about 20-30 mins over a bridge to get to wales and I can honestly say I can’t understand why the Welsh are always forgotten or not known. You’ll always here football chants about welsh sha**ing sheep it’s because they have so many sheep and the Welsh are always picked on by the English. I’m English but I do not have an animosity towards the welsh. If you do come to the UK visit Wales even though I must admit trying to pronounce their area names is difficult lol. I would recommend the Brecon Beacons especially if your into riding horses as you get to see more of the beauty scenery.

Taffy is actually a variant on the common Welsh name David/Davy ("Dafydd" in Welsh). An early 18th century dictionary says: "Welch-men are called Taffies from the Corruption of the word David", and St David's Day was sometimes referred to as "St Taffy's Day" many centuries ago.

The term Arcade is used throughout Europe to mean a covered street with shops. The word originated three centuries ago in Italy and strictly means a place with a vaulted roof. Effectively, arcades might be seen as the original shopping malls. You'll find them all over Europe. Cardiff, the city known in Welsh as Caerdydd, is actually one of the youngest capitals in Europe, as it became capital only in 1955. The ceremonial royal town of Caernarfon in the far North had been the capital of Gwynedd and is still where Princes of Wales are sometimes crowned, as Charles was in 1969. The town has the largest 13th century castle in Europe.
@WalesTheTrueBritons
@WalesTheTrueBritons Год назад
It isn’t. Cardiff was used by the Welsh as it’s capital as far back the 1st century CE. It only gained recognition as such from the outside world in 1955.
@t.a.k.palfrey3882
@t.a.k.palfrey3882 Год назад
@@WalesTheTrueBritons I don't want to debate, as this isn't the proper forum. But Tamion (today's Caerdydd) was a Roman fort of lesser import than Isca (today's Caerleon) which was a legionary fort. The Silures had Isca, or Venta Silurum, as their capital. Of course Wales wasn't a unified principality back then. The biggest unit was Gwynedd from the time of Cadwaladr in the 6th century. The kings of Gwynedd moved their capital about, from Caer (Chester) to Deganwy, Llanfaes, Aberfraw, Rhuddlan, and ending up at Abergwyngregyn in the 13th century. They were then conquered by the Norman king Edward and he set up his centre of occupying government at Caernarfon (Roman name Segontium) because of the legend that Elen (an early Christian saint) had been born there, and was the mother of Macsen Wledig (Magnus Maximus) who was the Britano-Roman Emperor of Britain, Gaul (France), and Spain in the 4th century. It was this imperial mythology which led Edward to have his architects design Caernarfon's massive walls in the same way,(using alternate coloured stone) as were the walls of Constantinople (Istanbul). Constantinus the Emperor, after whom Cair Segeint (Segontium) was named was said to be the father of Constantine the Great. Edward wanted to placate the locals by seeming to legitimate their double claim to being the home of emperors. In 1955, the principal reason given by the UK government for choosing Caerdydd over Caernarfon as capital wasn't history, but that the former was much larger (then 260,000 compared to 10,000), was in the centre of by far the most populous region of Wales, and had been the London government's chief administrative centre in Wales for almost 200 years. QED. Thanks for making me think.

Furthermore, this had the same meaning in America It then was strictly referred to as Penny arcades (such as in Atlantic City) where people would walk up and down looking for various amusements. It wasn't until the 1970's-1980's that it applied to video arcades but for most Americans, this is now the only meaning they're familiar with.

Talking about castles. Any place in Wales that has a castle normally starts with the Welsh word 'Caer' so there's Cardiff(Caerdydd in Welsh), Caerphilly, Caernarfon, Caerleon, Caergybi(Holyhead in English), Caerwent and many more. There is another word in Welsh for castle that is Castell. Just north of Cardiff is a small castle built as a Gothic revival project in the 19th century called 'Castell Coch'. It has been used in many movies. A fun fact: Wales has more castles per square mile than any other country in Europe.

I would suggest you watch other videos which give you a better perspective of Wales historically and geographically. I am sure you would find it very interesting. And although we were the first country to get united with England we were able to preserve our language and identity far more than Scotland or Ireland , mainly due to the fact that the Bible was translated into Welsh by William Morgan during the reign of Elizabeth I. This enabled the survival of tge Welsh language and encouraged people to read and educate themselves in their native tongue.

I've lived in Cardiff for over 20yrs, and that was one of the better videos about Cardiff I've seen 👌. The city is young for Europe. The castle being the centre point, and why we do have a proper "city centre" containing all our shops, bus/train station hubs, our University and even one our oldest hospitals being there. The centre is now mostly pedestrianised, with roads circling the main area (including the castle itself). The cities docks were a huge reason for its quick development, with the coal bring transported from the numerous valley coal mines (Wenglish being a language developed around the mining areas) being shipped around the world supporting the, then British empire and its steam trains/boats. The first million pound deal being struck in the Cardiff Coal Exchange building. The docks have been redeveloped into Cardiff bay (yet there're are still industrial areas and docks nearby. We try to keep our history, but use it for future enjoyment...... regardless of the reason things like the castles were built in the first place. If we forget our history, how can we learn from it. Alas some people take history as a slight on their own lives today. It can be difficult/uncomfortable. Yet let's not ignore it.
@tonys1636
@tonys1636 Год назад
Learning from history seems to be something seldom done, certainly over the mistakes made in the past, often repeated now but that's looking back with hindsight as they weren't seen as mistakes at the time. It's repeating the same experiment and expecting a different result.

Usually, the castle comes first - built on a strategic or vantage point - and then the town / city builds up around it. Arcade as a term is much older than video games. The Romans had archways filled with little shops = arcade. What you’re talking about is an amusement arcade re video games.

If you visit the UK, Wales is probably the best place to see a lot of castles in a short amount of time, especially north Wales.

I love the way he has never heard of Salmon and Cream Cheese in a bagel hehehe… it’s literally one of the most traditional fillings of a bagel. A bagel (traditionally from Jewish cuisine) is fairly well known for being filled with Lox und Schmear (Yiddish for Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese)

I had the afternoon cream tea in one of the tea rooms in the Arcade and it was wonderful. I had an unsual tea blend called Russian Caravan which was very dark and has a slightly bitter yet pleasent aftertaste. the scones were lovely and light and the cakes to die for. Further along i found a shop devoted to teas and was able to buy some loose Russian Caravan. Cardiff does feel quite cosy for a major city. And yes the castle is smack banfg in the centre

I live in Cardiff. I didn't know about the Pontcanna farmers market - I'll have to give it a look. The ruins are due to the dissolution of the monasteries, where Catholic churches were torn down during the reign of Henry VIII. Almost all cities in Europe are built on the water. It's because of early travelling by water.

Tea comes in thousands of styles and flavours, from black teas, green teas and herbal teas, they come from all over the world. Twining’s is a global brand and a good place to start trying teas because they have sample packs of ten. Tea can rejuvenate you, refresh you, relax you, settle your stomach, delight your senses, help you sleep, etc, depending on the type you choose.

I live around a 40 minute train ride from Cardiff in a small town called Maesteg, if you ever want to experience one of the best nights out, you should go to Cardiff when there's a Rugby match on, you'll be shoulder to shoulder with some of the happiest and friendliest people you've ever met, especially if Wales was playing and won.

Yes we have quite a lot of the self guidance tours going on. You can often pick up headphones etc at the front desk so you can take your time going round the site. Different sites have different ways of doing it. Arcade.. yes we also have gaming/amusement arcades but there are shopping arcades too. Arcade is really a sort of covered walkway so can have various uses. Wales is VERY famous for its leeks, though they are grown all over the UK. Also famous for rugby. Towns (originally fortified castles) were built on the coast as defences against invasions etc. as an island, we had to protect entry into our land as much as possible. Thank you for your continued interest in my country. I love your videos and sometimes I even learn something new about Britain, myself lol :)

As a Welshman i was asked if my nickname of taff was offensive to me. It was once used to meanba thief (amongst the inglish). Personally, having been born within a couple of hundred yards of the river, once a Taff always a Taff. There are also two cathedrals in Cardiff. One Catholic, one not . Live my hone city. Taff and proud.

Video game arcade is a room of games machines (and sometimes a few gambling fruit machines) and shopping arcade is the equivalent of a mall - indoor corridors with shops in the walls (often with a glass roof that lets light in and multiple floors).

Ahh I loved watching this, I live right in the centre of Cardiff and I love it so much because you can walk absolutely everywhere, everything is all in one place like the castle is literally RIGHT next to the city centre and there’s all the shops, restaurants, museums, pubs, clubs, stadiums, hotels, all in one place! Then Cardiff Bay is quite literally a 10 minute walk from the centre and it’s so lovely down there:) One thing I think a lot of people don’t know about Cardiff is that there’s actually canals running through the city, you can walk along some of them but most have actually been built on top of over the years, but they’re now working to uncover them which is exciting!

You can go in most castles, some you pay an entrance fee others you pay a voluntary donation for the upkeep. An arcade in this instance is an semi indoor shopping area.

What they called "Welsh toast" is "Welsh rarebit" often served with bacon too. There are lots of types of cake from Wales, Welsh cakes (pics ar y maen) are only one variety. Teisien lap, bara brith are some other traditional cakes. There is a massive cricket stadium in the centre of Cardiff (Swalec stadium). Bishops' palace was probably destroyed by Henry VIII during the reformation. When Henry turned away from Catholicism and created the Church of England. How did they manage to talk about Cardiff Bay and not mention the Senedd (Welsh Parliament)

The Millennium Stadium, known since 2016 as the Principality Stadium (Welsh: Stadiwm Principality) for sponsorship reasons, is the national stadium of Wales. Located in Cardiff, it is the home of the Wales national rugby union team and has also held Wales national football team games. Initially built to host the 1999 Rugby World Cup, it has gone on to host many other large-scale events, such as the Tsunami Relief Cardiff concert, the Super Special Stage of Wales Rally Great Britain, the Speedway Grand Prix of Great Britain and various concerts. It also hosted FA Cup, League Cup and Football League play-off finals while Wembley Stadium, London, England, was being redeveloped between 2001 and 2006, as well as football matches during the 2012 London, Summer Olympics.
