Bernd Das Brot is running in a permanent circle on the Kinder Kanal (KiKa) (childrens' channel) late at night while there is no actual show on. It is not so much for kids but actually meant for anyone who is still awake at 3 am for ... whatever reason. Just imagine watching this half-drunk after a party ... or stoned, or even just very tired ... Bernd has reached quite the cult status in Germany. The story about how Bernd was invented, told by one of the two guys who did, is almost as fun as Bernd himself.
Bernd das Brot was created for another show where he was a secondary caracter to the main characters chilli das Schaaf (a sheep) and Brigel der Bush (a walking schrubbery). Those two would allways created situations in wich Bernd was draged into against his will. Later on they needed a short for the time where the kids programm would not run and Bernd became the main character of that. This one is one of those filler episodes for the night when children schould be sleeoing. Those night shows mostly make fun of different topics, like call in, casting shows, chillout lounges and more. But sometimes there is a bit of a message in them like in this epsisode. And yes as you can guess the creater of Bernd also are a bit nerdy and loved to visit games con and some larp events. Strangly enough this extras with Bernd himself became much more famous than the kids show he was from. Also you are correct on him he is somewhat depressed.
It's always the same basic concept: Bernd das Brot is dragged into the white hell of loneliness. Where, no matter which direction he passes from the screen he will always return into the screen from the opposite direction. Not that Bernd doesn't love boredom. He really does. He would happily watch paint dry. He just wants to be left alone and not be dragged into these shows against his will. He KNOWS from many many personal experiences that he only gets a chance to escape if he somehow complies with the totally dumb and ridiculous demands of the amorphous, disembodied voice of the show's host. And Bernd absolutely HATES being forced into it. That Bernd constantly breaks the 4th wall, way more than Deadpool, to accomplish those goals while simultaneously admonishing the viewers that IF they weren't watching this stupid crap he wouldn't be forced into those situations... You know, it's the meta aspects and his otherwise flawless reasoning that makes it so hilarious. I love that sarcastic, cynical bastard .. 😂😂😂
I always remembered 'Bernd' as hangover time since they looped these clips over the night. Coming home from partying, Bernd was the way to go when you needed time to think if you actually still do something, go to bed or throw up 😉
The funny thing about it is not so much the show by itself, but the fact that it runs as a late night loop creates a strong WTF moment for everyone who sees it the first time. I still remember exactly the moment when i saw it the first time at 3am after a party. So i watched the whole loop twice and it was damn funny at the time due to the absurd situation.
This episode definitely has a message. Bernd thinks nerds are cringe, but then he realizes that his fascination for ingrain wallpaper is no different. So he finally admits he is a nerd, and that nothing's wrong with that. These episodes often criticize popular TV formats (like casting shows, or call in shows), or things like social media. Bernd is grumpy and sarcastic, but that makes the criticism more funny. As others have already said, they loop these episodes the whole night on a children's channel called KiKa. I think it was originally supposed to bore kids, so they go to sleep (which is why Bernd even tells them to switch the TV off in other episodes). But then it kinda became iconic, and they made it more funny. I remember being bored as a kid at a family reunion, and my parents stayed there very long, so I turned on the TV and kept watching this, even if it was the same episode all over again every time. But I was entertained.
You can´t do it. Bernd has to be enjoyed/endured 3 o´clock in the morning, while you just start to sober up a little bit and just not tired enough to sleep. Than you lie in front of the TV and switch channels until you reach the strange shit (Pocker, Curling, Darts, etc.). 20 Minutes later you see Bernd... To make it crystal clear we were all drunk, stoned, high or worse as we saw this show, that is the typical Bernd experience! Bernds Fanbase were more in the 15 to 25 years range... students build drinking games around this show. P.S.: Belive me education wasn´t on our mind as we watched Bernd.
The main reason it got so popular was because it ran late at night when no regular kids show ran. It was something completely different and, at least for me, it ran in the background while playing a game or while on my phone. The "stories" are so simple that you don't really need to pay much attention but still know what's going on. Also, the entire style with the puppet, sound effects and it running late at night made for some kind of surreal feeling.
This clip is (or was) aired in an endless loop during the night on the public german children's TV channel KIKA. It's not really meant for kids, more for adults who come back drunk from a party, etc. Bernd das Brot is a character from a children show, but this is outside his usual role. And yes, he is depressed and cynical, especially because the channel (represented by the ominous off screen voice) basically forces him to do this night time program over and over again. In other versions he tries to escape but never manages it, so he is trapped in an endless loop in this "white hell".
During my time at university I used to wake up drunk and confused in the middle of the night with Bernd on a white background telling me to switch the TV off. Also Bernd is best consumed on weed.
I think you are correct that Bernd gives some life lessons. In this it is that everyone could be considered a Nerd if they speak about their favorite thing to do (hobby). Bernd loves Wallpaper and so he is a Nerd in that area. And it doesn`t matter if your hobby is kinda lame or funny if you enjoy it. And as so many things in Germany it is brought to people by satire/sarcasm. The other themes of Bernd night program are Call In Shows (and how stupid those are), Chill Out Lounge, Someone got Talent Shows, Social Media or even History.
Oh my god, I remember the inventor of Bernd tell the story of his invention at a convention in Germany 😂 that man is brillant and absolutely hilarious. And fun fact about that special episode: It actually happend to be made after he visited that convention more than once and came into contact with a lot of fans with great costumes who he said they could have never made that well... so he asked around if anyone was interested to be in a night episode that would be shown in a loop till morning on the childrens Channel. Just for the fun of it and seeing how it goes behind the scenes... 😅 Imagine seeing this thing as a world premiere, sitting at a convetion with lots of Geeks and Nerds and knowing at least half the people showing up in that episode. We had sooo much fun watching that. And it's still one of my favourites out of all the Nachtschleife Shows. 😁
yep, Tommy Krappweis is a great guy! He writes funny books and he made a good film in which he also included reenactment groups for some scenes. These days he even does some scientific work on Viking history.

This was never really for children, its more for teens and stoners since it ran on a loop over night after the normal kids tv was done. It was basically this channels version of the testscreen when they didnt broadcast anything. It became really popular and still is to this day. So yeah, most young adults at least know Bern das Brot nowadays. Also, yes Bernd is very depressed. They also mistranslated the dungeons and dragons roleplay group as cosplay friends or whatever in the subtitles, thats not what was said in the video.
I would also recommend from Bernd das Brot: "The History of germany" (Die Geschichte von Deutschland) - dunno if there is a subtitled version, but its funny, weird and educative :)
This is not a show... That channel only has actual stuff until a certain point in the night. Bernd das Brot is their version of static noise :) That's why at the beginning he asks if other channels don't have anything fun.

he has been invented over 20 years ago as a side character, but gor famous when the childrens program got it's own channel in 2003 and needed a night show (9pm till 6am I think) they they could run on repeat. They have a bunch of different clips all between 5 and 20 minutes long, and each night only one runs on repeat. It's still running unchanged after all those time. The clips are intended for older people and are actualy to discurage children from watching TV at night. Some of them are not really child appropriate. And most children won't get the sarcasm and ironc the depressed bread spouts. It represents the adult that is done with the world at the end of a long day.
Bernd das Brot used to be an independent programme for children. (Together with a talking bush and a sheep) But later these clips were used as a continuous loop after the end of the broadcast. So Bernd was broadcast as filler all night long. Go to bed kids, its only Bernd now.
Bernd is a legend. A sarcastic, depressed, nerdy loaf of bread that likes looking at woodchip wallpaper and collects particularly boring stones. The fun thing about this is that it appeals to both kids and adults. Kids see a funny bread that gets into all sorts of unfortunate situations while there are cultural references galore (often to Star Wars, Star Trek etc.) that make adults smile but fly right over the kids' heads. That video is just the filler that runs in a loop when the normal programming of Kika (Kinderkanal = Children's Channel) ends. But there have been lots of Bernd programmes over the years. Parodies of Robin Hood, Star Trek, Star Wars, Dinner for One (definitely check that out if you haven't already) and more. There was also a daily show called Tolle Sachen in which Bernd had to test the inventions of Briegel (a bush) and inevitably got hurt in the process. Bernd even won a special Adolf-Grimme-Preis which is kinda equivalent to an Emmy award for representing "the right to bad mood" and resisting "the reign of good mood that endlessly drones out of the television" (the jury's rationale).
There are 2 variants of Bernd das Brot. one more like Sesame Street and this variant for adults. It is broadcasted on the children's channel KiKa from 9pm to 6am when not broadcasting regular content. Many people have spent many hours watching him in lack of good TV, especially when stoned 😁
The night loops aren't meant for kids, it's a staple for drunk or otherwise intoxicated adults, returning home and getting a few minutes of good humored chillout before falling asleep. 😁 And during the regular broadcast Bernd is the straight man, the foil to two other characters. There's Chili the Sheep, stuntwoman and adrenaline junkie, and Briegel the Bush, mad scientist, inventor, and subscriber to get-rich-quick-schemes. Even if Bernd does not like to admit it, he would do anything for his friends and gets roped into lots of misadventures. And he sings the Blues, they produced an album on cd about twenty years ago. As a companion piece they even filmed a little story with the different tracks, I bet it's still around on the net somewhere.
This is part of their night rotation. Some clips are made for kids but a lot of them are not. But totally great when you come home from party and not able to sleep for a short while.
Good call. In german, the voice-from-offscreen actually calls the RPG troupe 'Bernd's roleplaying group'. So it's an error in the subtitles. Most likely related to the followup scene.
the concept is of course out of date. It was famous because at the times when you watched german TV at night there just wasnt really anything on... So Bernd took you out of this misery. Now, kids and adults just watch what ever they want at night times on the internet.
I still remember that when I had a fever as a child I mostly wouldn't be able to fall asleep, so my mom just made me watch Bernd. I loved those times XD

There is nothing more German than a depressed loaf of bread low key roasting everyone and everything! 😂 Bernd is more of a teen and adult thing. In his main series so to speak he is the extra to a hyperactiv sheep and a know-it-all bush. They do all kinds of things funny while Bernd just wants to stay out of it and hate it all. He is the voice of reason in the group too, calling out the other two for beeing childish, careless and doing dangerous things without thinking about concequences. 😊

I also watched this on Ryan Was' Channel and he found it confusing but also hilarious. There is something very special about a depressed, sarcastic and ironic white loaf of bread being captured in a screen of infinite white. While I think this isn't the best episode, it still is extremely funny. Tbh, the pronounciation of Bernd das Brot was pretty decent, Ryan did way worse xD.

A few days later and at the request of thousands of children who had written letters and emails, Bernd's bread was searched for by the police and found. He was in a cellar in Weimar. intact. Best Bernd das Brot Clip is the Vincent Raven Mockup where there gets a dead bird carried into the studio and Bernd is like "This raven is dead" but the voice from the off tells "No, it just sleeps" *pushes it with the robot arm* "See it moved" and Bernd has to play alike
These clips running at night on that TV channel named KiKa we’re conceived as random encounters that Bernd das Brot had to endure. There was 1 encounter that was looped endlessly the whole night and it was (is?) switched for another encounter over the years. The running gag of this is, that Bernd didn’t want to get involved with any of it but was forced into it. This works so well, because Bernd das Brot stays true to his character that has been conceived for an actual TV show, that - in itself was somewhat nonsensical.
Imagine coming home from a party, drunk. You partied hard and don't want to go to sleep. So you turn your TV on to watch Bernd das Brot, until you fall as sleep at some time. Kika is a kid's channel, but this show is aired from 10 pm to 6 am and that's definitely not the time of the day when kids watch TV (or at least it shouldn't be the time). ;)

As others have said though, I wonder if this is aimed and people who have consumed alcohol and other substances and switch on the TV at 3 o'clock in the morning. Definitely gives that kind of vibe! Bernd was a last call character, invented close to the meeting for apporval. Originally they created a cactus with parody of Hitler in mind but thought it would be inappropriate for children's television with audience younger than 10 years old. They designed him hours before the presentation. They produced a few clips to broadcast it after shutdown in an infinite loop (nightloop between 9 pm and 6 am). The first clip had a duration of seven minutes that were looped these nine hours. This "nerd" episode was first aired in 2013. But there are some contents that aren't funny at all and could harm children. There is a big controversy about that puppet.
