The guy that plays Fran's boyfriend used to play Robin in a great kids show called Maid Marian and her Merry Men alongside Tony Robinson and Danny John Jules.

The Sweeney was a 70s hardnosed cop show set in London where the villains were all cockney geezers and the detectives were only slightly better. "Get yer trousers on, yer nicked" was something of a catchphrase (thought they probably never actually said it). Seeing Manny channeling that attitude is funny!

Yeah, the Sweeney is the kind of show that Life on Mars is harkening back to. (Also the name Carter that Manny gave is the name of one of the two main characters.)

I love Black Books. I hadn’t actually seen it before you started reacting to it but I enjoyed the episodes you did and then went and binge-watched the entire series afterwards. It was very enjoyable and was the perfect length, didn’t feel drawn out or rushed. So, I certainly wouldn’t be opposed if this did become a monthly series.

Black Books is well worth watching, but unlike Father Ted and IT Crowd, there are more OK episodes (as opposed to really good ones), and I feel it hasn't dated all that well. IT Crowd and Black Books would both be great for monthly reactions, but of the two, I would vote for IT Crowd (I'm assuming restarting Father Ted isn't an option...)

Oh yeah, Manny (Bill Bailey) is the real star of this show, hands down. I've watched plenty of his music/standup stuff and he also shows up in Hot Fuzz as well as other movies and tend to pop up in other shows with Simon Pegg and other UK comedians. Bernard Black (Dylan Moran) is really good as a dysphoric sloppy drunk but Manny takes the cake imho.

Yeah the sweeney thing... it was a 70s cop show it was called the sweeney because of Cockney rhyming slang sweeney todd, the flying squad. The flying squad being a team of elite plain clothes police/detectives in London.

The Sweeney was a brit cop show starring John Thaw from the 70's it's like Kojack or Starsky and Hutch sort of gritty with fights and car chases

Black books made me look into bill bailey more and I went to see his ‘part troll’ stand up tour, I couldn’t recommend getting hold of that set to watch more. It’s a little off the cuff, but just brilliant!

Definitely make this a regular! It's got the whacky, off centre humour that Father Ted has. Lots of references in this one to British police dramas - Hot Fuzz of course (in which Bill Baily played 2 characters ;) ) and more subtle references to the Sweeney. It's been such a long time since I watched this that some episodes (like this one) are completely fresh to me - pretty much as if I'm watching them for the first time.

Black Books ended about 3 years before Hot Fuzz was released and the Sweeney references were as subtle as a brick to the face, given that it was namechecked as being the influence right there in Bill's first scene. I absolutely agree this should be one of Noah's regular shows though.
