The final ten minutes of the final season of Blackadder...where the comedy slowly seeps away to be replaced by the horrific reality of war, is one of the most moving pieces of television ever recorded. It deserves to have a much wider audience than just us in the UK.

People rightly give Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson a lot of credit for their performances, but the way Hugh Laurie earnestly and enthusiastically delivers his lines as George is just so perfect. He plays the foppish English boy so so well.

And to make it onto American TV he had to swing his balls low, then swallow a frog washed down with gravel. If your voice doesnt sound like its been rubbed with 40 grit wet n dry, youll never make it. Cant the yanks accept peoples voices for what they are? Everyone knows Harrison Ford in real life sounds like Kermit! If you aint got tits, buy some. If you have a high voice, get a voice coach. Its all false. Thats why British is best. No cover ups and faking. Just pure, brilliant scripts and good acting!

@@Igotknobblies You should read the story about that casting. Bryan Singer was absolutely adamant that a British actor not be cast as House because they couldn't do the accent right, and Laurie's audition (recorded in a hotel bathroom) completely fooled him.

The way Atkinson describes the two opposing sides as 'blocks' and how it was supposed act as a deterrent, with a tiny flaw, so much echos, more or less how Professor Margaret MacMillian lays the whole situation out in her book The War That Ended Peace. It's interesting watching the Host of the channel react to British humour. As a Anglo-Canadian and having been influenced by humour from both the UK and America, while he does find certain obvious bits funny, there is alot of the subtly that clearly escapes him. While I get a fair amount of the subtly I didn't grow up in the culture so there are things I can't fully appreciate either.

Like Dad's Army, it's part of our national psyche to laugh at ourselves. In many countries, the idea of laughing at servicemen that risked and lost their lives in one the world's worst events is unthinkable. But, we fully embrace the farce in all things without taking away that meaning. Our best comedies have a lot of depth. They make you full on belly laugh and then suddenly hit you with a sledgehammer of devastation. Just like the end of this series does. Comedy and tradgedy exist together. The worse the situation is, the more we need to find ways to find humour in it.

this particular era of Blackadder was aimed at the the lunacy of the establishment and the futility of war itself. It was not disrespectful but it was a poignant message delivered through a humourous medium. The final scene was gut wrenching when you consider how accurate it was ! Only the money grabbing establishment see war as a profit opportunity whilst scarificing millions of human beings to achieve it. That is one of the reasons the world is being " MADE" to wake up as we speak ???

Steven Fry does a great piece on explaining the difference between British comedy and American comedy. Along the lines of saying that American comedy tends to be based around the cool kid, the winner, the good looking ladies man. Like The Fonz. And that British comedy tends to be based around a wise guy, a chancer, the underdog. Like Delboy. It’s a good speech he makes.

I personally would drop fools, grave and peep show from that list (heretical, I know...). Only fools was a long drawn out story with a few memorable peaks but the peaks just raised the average laughter, rather then being an indication of the whole thing. I found peep show an uncomfortable watch, the taller of the two being acidic, the other one being a far funnier man. Grave was a tale of excessive extreme bad luck and looking back on it I find it hard to see why I found it funny when I was young. However. Porridge, morecambe and wise, open all hours, dads army... these represent the finest uk comedy (on top of blackadder and 2 ronnies) which sadly we will never see the likes of again because someone somewhere will take offence at it, and any attempt to match these comedy gods will ultimately fall flat. Remember these men and women. This is the foundation for all we see now.

Each season of Blackadder is set in a different era of history. The first season is set in more medieval times, the second is set around the court of Elizabeth the First, the third set in the late 18th century at the same time as the French revolution, and the fourth season (the one you are watching here) is set during the first world war. Personally, I think that it would be good for you to watch the different seasons because the position of the Blackadder is different in each one and this makes for a very interesting difference in the way he interacts with the other characters in the different seasons

One of my favourite 'play on words' was the Monty Python team playing the sketch of when Hitler was on holiday in England, in disguise. He only changed his name to 'Hilter' and kept his uniform on with his henchmen doing the same. They stayed at a bed and breakfast establishment in Weston-super-Mare and discussed the annexation of Sunderland. (for Americans, this is a town in the NE of England). Absolutely hilarious.

It might be of interest to know that this, the final episode of Blackadder Goes Forth, is often shown in British High Schools as part of the WW1 History syllabus. The end (where they all die bravely in a useless military push) is done very well, and is even quite profound.

@@No1sonuk I think it's made clear. As I recall, in the very last scene, we see them climbing out of the trench, running into enemy fire, and then it fades into a shot of fields of poppies, a flower that grew in the battlegrounds of Flanders after the war, and is the symbol for deceased soldiers used at remembrance events in Britain.

When we were kids we had a Polish ww2 spitfire pilot come to our school to give a talk on his involvement in the 'Battle of Britain ' . He said that on his first mission he and his friend were attacked by two German fighters and both took evading action by splitting off and diving for one while the other gained height. He said " this action enabled my friend and I to shoot down the fockers " . Our teacher interjected by explaining to us kids that fockers where a type of German fighter plane. The Polish pilot replied with " Yes , that is correct but, these fockers were Messerschmidts " ! : )

I would watch all the black adder box sets it’s some of the best comedy ever in the uk. The 1st season is a bit difficult at times but from season 2 it’s just the best. A previous person stated that the final episode for blackadder goes forth being the best finale to a series. I highly recommend you watch at least the whole season 4. There is a particular episode about baldrick explaining about a ‘bullet with his name on it’ classic and amazing. Even though baldrick is considered stupid some of his statements are so profound and clever in alternate way to look at things.

Rowan Atkinson is a British comedy treasure and I'm greatful to him for providing me with memories of my dad laughing as a child before I lost him at 15. We used to sit and watch all of Blackadder's series and Only Fools and horses. In fact I only really watch TV when there's repeats of this or Motorsport. Great wit and humour, oh and he said mad as a button not bycicle 😂👍

What a great, generous compliment, "You guys have some awesome comedy over there..." I think so, (still some rubbish too), but Rowan Atkinson and crew in the many Blackadder incarnations are some of our finest. This first world war scenario juggled the respect for the sad sacrifice with the opportunity to laugh at the madness of it all...and the stupidness of the upper classes as well as the ordinary soldier, and with extraordinary balance, had a tragic finale' that brought tears to the eyes of the audience.
