In the Original production of The Sound of Music in London it had Constance Shacklock in the role of the Mother Superior. When her husband died she never hit that high note at the end of the song ever again. I should know, I was one of those Von Trapp kids in the London production.

That singer reaching that high note is almost as impressive as a cute handsome young American man reaching the very low notes with his deep voice :) Anyway, now you need to watch the whole of the film "Sound of Music" (1965) which is a classic traditional favourite film. It is compulsory for everybody in the UK to watch "The Sound of Music" at least once a year, every year at Christmas time, otherwise the universe will explode.
The Promenade concerts are in the Albert Hall in London every summer culminating in the Last Night which is a special occasion. It is the biggest classical concert in the world.

It is so great that you see to love the UK so much. I think we are lucky to live here too, I was watching a programme about the most intricate lifesaving operations that take place here. Some are over two days and involve huge amounts of surgeons and nurses, followed by weeks in intensive care, all on our wonderful NHS. In the sixties I worked at the Gaumont Manchester when the sound of music was showing…I presented a bouquet to the young lady who played Lisa .unfortunately she is no longer with us……those were the days folks I still have all the photographs ..I loved every minute of it.Happy New Year to all.x

The Proms are a general Summer Music Festival and the Last Night is always dominated by a great soloist with huge orchestral accompaniment. The second half of the programme is the patriotic anthems, usually 'Jerusalem', 'Rule Britannia', 'Land of Hope and Glory', 'Songs of the Fleet', 'Pomp and Circumstance Marches' etc.
I just love that a young lad is so taken by the Proms. So genuinely affected by them and so appreciative of them. That's an Oscar winning song from The Sound of Music. Love that film! It used to come on every Christmas (that and Star Wars). Oh, those were the days! Take care, wee man!

This song was sung in the hit musical film sound of music. Its based on vontrap family who are a real family but some of the film is not all really they did put there own story parts in it. Julie Andrews played a nun to be a nanny to the vontrap children. As there mother had passed away . You should watch it . The singing is fabulous by Julie Andrews.
20 years ago I went on a trip to Salzburg, on our trip from the airport to the hotel we talked to the taxi driver about “The Sound of Music”, he replied that this is a banned film in Austria as for what ever reason why we never found out. We had a half day coach tour from Salzburg enjoying where excerpts from the SOM was filmed. We also visited the cathedral where the wedding took place. The tour finished in the Mirabel gardens where the famous scene of the children on the steps and also the chase scene through the rose arches. It was an incredible experience.
It might surprise you to know that many of the people who are singing along are in tears - and this has a great deal of emotion at this event every year
It's a beautiful US song composed by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II in the late 50s. IMO, the best vocal performance was in 1961 by Welsh singer Shirley Bassey. It went to #1 in the UK chart!

Classic musicals such as 'Carousel' and 'The Sound of Music' are one of the great achievements of 20C American culture. In the UK we have Sing-A-Long-A Sound of Music film shows in certain cinemas. As well as Rocky Horror Show ones. Where the audiences dress up and sing a long with the movie.

By coincidence they are playing the Last Night of the Prom.now as a New Years Eve rerun.it has started very seriously but the mood lightens as the evening wears on. This was last September and one of the highlights for me was Floemce Price a 30s US composer with her orchestral Juba Dane ans also the song Australia will always be home to me by the male singer who iIS Australoan . I'm sure others have made these points, but Ill add mine in case anything has been missed. Both the songs you have featured are from musical shows, You'll never walk alone is from Carousel and Climb every Mountain from The Sound of Music. The Proms are mainly about classical music but do feature other genres. They often feature a night of Broadway either with a range of songs from shows or sometimes a choral version of a particular show. Such as Kiss me Kate I recall was one they did. If you search Proms Broadway then a lot of these features come up. The proms take place in the Royal Albert Hall and the Last Night is a special concert that has a whole range of songs that always feature, mostly patriotic songs. It is a real prize to get a ticket for the floor area of the Royal Albert Hall for the last night. That's when you see all the flags etc. Nowadays they hold simultaneous concerts in a number of big centres, like Manchester Belfast etc., that include some local input but also relay the main patriotic part live to these venues on huge TV's, that's what you are seeing when you see the large crowds outdoors.
Hi Joel; The Proms Season consists of about 75+ concerts betweem July and September each year - mostly in the Albert Hall. You'll find everything in genre terms: all of it - symphonic, choral, ensemble, modern, classic, early, baroque, jazz, light entertainment, films music night, ..you name t - it's there usually. The 'Last Night' is a traditional evening - first half varies - second half all the same each year. Basically it's about music. Been going since the Twenties. Biggie is the availability of the standing room for near zero prices - students love it. And queue.! BY THE WAY. I watch this because of you. You have a special joy, curiousity, humility and humour. Keep hold of it. It's precious. The great gifts of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control etc ( check your Bible..) are the life givers. Just ask for them - and you live .

As Many have pointed out this song has a rich history from the film Sound of Music. We sang it in elementary school in the rural south USA. It is a part of cultural literacy that might not be well taught these days. I'm glad you discovered it, but sad that you didn't already know it well. Last Night Of The Proms enables us to show the patriotism and pride that still exists in our country. It's by Freddie Mercury of Queen duetting with the brilliant Montserrat Caballe. She really did have the voice of an angel and she will blow you away. I'm so glad you had that reaction to "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" -- it's a truly wonderful song, and a perfect climax to Act One of "The Sound of Music". Having said that, my all-time favourite rendition of it was by the English singer-actress Patricia Routledge, who had a very long career, and is currently enjoying her retirement (the Queen made her a Dame of the British Empire). Now I happen to think that she was the best singer of this song, even though she doesn't go for the very high note at the end. I don't think the Mother Superior of a convent would go quite so far... Dame Patricia is best known for her character Hyacinth Bucket ("...the name is BOO-KAY!"). You might like to react to that series, it's called Keeping Up Appearances. I think the singer is Susan Bullock - She's great! But if you want your toes to really curl Joel, try some Montserrat Caballé -she's one of my personal favourites. And for a male tenor voice, Luciano Pavarotti is a must listen. Have a Happy New Year son, and stay safe. :)

Have you ever heard of HINGE & BRACKET entertainers from the UK, they sing a beautiful song called 'This is my lovely Day' from Bless the Bride'', it's here on 'You Tube' 'Hinge & Bracket This is my lovely day' , they were a UK double act that lasted 30 years!
I heard Constance Shatlock sing that song in the show in London , many years ago, and the hairs stood on the back of my neck. Her voice was so moving and utterly beautiful. She too was a singer who appeared at the proms. I will never forget that night. So Plsd U enjoy watching the proms. Land of Hope and Glory always 'gets to me'
After "You'll Never Walk Alone' was featured in The Sound of Music, Jerry Marsden made a wonderful recording of it, which was subsequently adopted by Liverpool FC as their "Anthem"

You should listen to Lucia Popp performing "Fruhling" (Spring) from R.Strauss's "Vier Letzte Lieder" -- Four Last Songs. What the audience didn't know was that they were Lucia's four last songs. She was dying.
You really need to watch all the Rogers and Hammerstein Musicals - They were American lol You'll never walk alone and Climb every mountain both are from the musicals! The Proms is the worlds largest Classical Music festival held over I think 40 nights in London every year! The last night is a mixture of popular classical, Opera and Patriotic music! it has an amazing atmosphere live! I went one year and HM Queen was there! The Last night I believe is broadcast live worldwide you should be able to watch it?!

Hi Joel, the Proms are a series of concerts televised by the BBC, they feature Classical and Operatic concerts mainly, but in recent years they also have included Jazz and sometimes TV series music such as Doctor Who, one that I particularly enjoyed! Hi Joel, The term Proms comes from promenade. It was coined in 1875 when the idea was to bring the best music to as many people as possible. Now it is an eight week music festival. The last night of the Proms is a celebration of some of the best Btitish patriotic songs like Land of Hope and glory and Jerusalem. You must save up and come to the U.K. I would love to be your tour guide lol

Joel, you are such a romantic! No, this is not typical of the Proms. The music covers most genres of classical music from Bach to Beethoven etc with a few popular ‘bits’ added.
And sometimes very modern stuff too. I took my then very new partner to a Harrison Birtwhistle concert 20 years ago. He has not forgiven me to this day
