It amazes me how similar Denmark looks when viewing older videos. I say that, because in my previous video, I showed how dilapidated many of our historical buildings are in my own city. During my visit last year I seen many buildings that were well over a century old. A few that were multiple centuries old. They're like a time capsule to me. It also shows how much of a difference we have building structures and homes.
Thank you so much again for the wonderful hospitality I received from everyone I had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with. I'm especially grateful for the home cooked meal and the crepe thin pancake things that were for dessert 😊
I cannot wait to go back to Denmark . . . . I cannot wait to go back to any of the Scandinavian countries and spend more time in country, versus trying to visit multiple places in a rush. (Typical American 😆🤷‍♂️) But before I go back to either, I'm going to Finland first.
Thanks for watching & have a great day!

About history, I think Danes are very proud of their long, living, continuous history - and should be. In Finland we say that continental Europe starts in Denmark and southwards. The houses with white plaster and visible timber in all directions, we call "kors-virkes-hus" - aka cross-timber houses in verbatim translation. That was a middle/central European way to save and use the minimal amount of timber. Timber was expensive, and often imported from the north, and perhaps they had clay and cobbels in abundance. These old building methods are fascinating. I'm so glad that history is your great interest. One day you'll make a visit to Eastern Europe, where they proudly built up their citycenters, after the WW2 bombing had levelled them to dust - in the west the buildings were made in modern design (glass and concrete), but in the East they often used old methods and materials. Very impressive. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u5KJ4eXV59w.html

We are definently a happy middle ground between the joie de vivre of continental Europe and solitude/nature-loving north Europe. Also it's not plaster, it's chalk washed. The chalk helps to protect the wood and clay from humidity.

growing up in copenhagen i would say bakken is for the working class. the resturants are also a bit more fancy in tivoli, and you will see many famous danish people in grøften fks we almost never went to tivoli when i was a kid, because the adults could not drink in the same. my sister had a hidden casino on top of one of the resturants in bakken when i was a kid.. i have never heard of anything shady in tivoli, my ex used to work there and make very expensive food. i had 2 sisters working on bakken when i was a kid, and when i played in the shops i won all the big teddy bears and so on, in first try.. because my sisters knew the owners and most of it can all be set to win or loose

I was born in 1965. Back then Denmark was like a "village". Everyone shared the same background. Very few rich people - and not many poor people either - the rest, hard working but of modest but adequate means. And of course - everyone was white and christian ;o). People of colour were rarely seen - in fact I was well into my teens before I saw a black person "live". I dont remember any kind of racism. Just curiosity - and probably thoughtless stupid questions.

Specifically the chalk washed half-timbered houses with straw roofs are preserved in many parts of Denmark, i live in a pendler town outside of Copenhagen and even we have a few of them. They are also very common on Lolland-Falster in the southern part of Sjælland. Because of that the job and education to building those roofs also persists 'Stråtækker' is what we call it. Generally though it is in many ways the same, like the outdoors lunch/supper tables is still more or less what we do in summer, we do it because the sun doesn't go down until near 11pm. Life is a bit faster now a days even in Jutland, but overall my childhood in the 90s and 00s on my grandads farm was basically that. He was a horse breeder and trainer by trade and farmer by necessity so there was lots of horse carriage riding, he also in his younger days rode and bred horses for the tuborg horsecarriage which used to deliver beer before vans were invented. The horses he bred are called Jutish brewer horses, which are a mix between an old Danish war horse and a British white sock breed, so basically muscle on four legs. He was one of the first peopole to breed the horses on Sjælland. Long story short, it's the same vibe, which is very nice an assault of nostalgia.

A few things have changed especially on the west coast of Denmark. today there is no fishing industry in Esbjerg (literally 0) - the entire harbor has become a European hotspot for the offshore industry - petrochemical and wind - and most of the harbor has been shut off to the public do the safety risks.

I'm 32 and from Denmark, but deeply fascinated by the history from the 1960's and down. The 50's and 60's probably come out on top as my favorite periods in terms of fashion, design and just the overall impression I have of life back then. The war was over and there seemed to be quite an upswing in wellbeing and a lot of hope for the future among the people in our society. Anybody who actually lived through the periods may wanna correct me here if I'm wrong 😅 Somehow I feel very connected to older periods, even though I wasn't even born back then. I know we tend to romanticize these periods heavily if we watch black and white movies from back then, cause a time like the 1940's wasn't an era of dreams by any means. I guess it's a mental escape for me, longing for simpler times before the modern world went absolutely bonkers 🫠
@itsmebrysonp
@itsmebrysonp Год назад
I'll be 32 this year. Your description of why the 50's & 60's fascinate you are almost exact to how I view it. The stories I heard growing up about post war life. Romanticizing what my life would be life if I lived during that period. My grandparents would take me to a lot of museums and historical places every summer because they lived just outside Washington D.C. and I believe that also has a big influence of my interest. Thank you for watching and commenting 😄 Have a great Sunday!

@@itsmebrysonp Np. I think the oldest houses I've been to in Denmark, are from around the 1500s. There are quite a few of them. Many of them do have a problem though. The ceiling height. I'm 6 feet (182 cm), and have been in houses, where I can't stand up straight. In some houses, it has been fixed, while most houses from that age, are under strict rules, about how much you're allowed to change the house. This can be because of cultural history.

In the 1940's and 1950's modernization of city centers some of the old houses where not just demolished to rubble. There was an active effort to preserve some of those buildings and landmarks. Houses, wind mills for grain, barns, fishing houses, small factories and one man workshops like a cobler or barber..... They simply numbered every stone, board, tool, sign, and item. Moved it to different areas and rebuild it just like it once was. Even today families can spend a summer living like they did in the stoneage or the 1800's interacting with visitors and guests coming to learn about the history. That ferry "Hjejlen" is still operating today. Sailing you from the town of Silkeborg to the famous sky mountain en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himmelbjerget
