The history of cursing with disease is a tradition that dates back to the Protestant Reformation (and the independence of the Netherlands). Instead of cursing someone/thing with something after life, like damnation, as the Catholics do, the local Dutch flavour of Protestantism believed that God would show His disfavor in this worldly life with for example dissease, hence a rich vocabulary of health afflicting expletives

That story about that one little refugee boy from Iran crying when he realized he was the only kid who didn't "get a visit" from Sinterklaas or get any presents was so sad! It was kind of weird to see them laugh about it and pretty hard to stomach.

Dutch immegrant to Germany (and back) here. I've lived through the German Saint Nicklaus at a young age, 2 decades ago. The black Pete was so so much worse than in NL. In Germany, they don't wear colourful clothes, most colour are the bright red lips and bright gold earrings, absolute caricature of slaves, and they don't have this gleeful happy vibe like Santa's Elves and Dutch Petes, but are to be grumpy, stern and are the ones to "deal punishment" to the bad kids. (Where in NL it is the Saint and his bag that comes with the threath of punishment to bad kids)

@jezusbloodie

@@Seyone030 @Seyone030 😂😂🤪 fucker thinks I'm a desert tribe religion follower. My runic display name contains the Germanic postfix "-thryth", meaning Daughter of Thor while my original RU-vid name drives the spot with Jezus. most Dutch aren't religious, just like Christmas these "holi"days (or as transliterated from Dutch "party-days") aren't celibrated in a religious context by most. The time from traditional North European Christmas up to the New Year's are simply known as "De Feestdagen", Thé Party Days. These days serve as a time of get together and to celebrate life and being together. The epitome of the Dutch cultural core phenomenon known as "gezellig" Sinterklaas is just a partyday slightly before those specifically for childeren to celibrate. The fertility practices (which you have given?the name of a suspected Germanic Goddess, not a holy day), like masive bonfires, painting eggs and whatnotgot subsumed into Eastern holiday. Halloween's ball only got rolling her in northern Europe after much and long exposure to hollywood. But seeing as you find all that somehow paradoxical lemme have you know: Christianity is only as successful as it is because early on it (as if it were a singular group lol but for this point I'm making, kind of is) was so succeful in adapting local deities as saints and angles while keeping local traditions by putting them in a Christian suit.

Funny thing about the urinal is that there are only a few, in Amsterdam (only?) and they are merely a feature (not 'a thing') because they are somewhat weird. I wanna look up how many there are actually, but that's besides the point, which is they are probably the most photographed of filmed urinals, in the world. edit: chatgpt reluctantly gives me around 35 in total in Amsterdam, but that would be a number from a feww years ago and btw, France has 'pissoirs'. They stem from a time when they were fighting diseases roaming around in big cities.

I got 3 bikes. Because of reasons. The reasons being that I thought one frame was irreparably damaged, so I got another one, then I found a workaround for the first bike. Then I got more demanding for some technical characteristics for my main bike, so I got another bike with more appropriate specs. However the first bike is customized so much for my taste, I still end up using it a lot. I do not currently own a bar bike, or a railway station bike. Give it time.

some context for 11:35 onward, they just used to be black until about 2018 because of the smut from chimneys at least that was the story for children so people could disguise themselves, but now people realized it basically looks like thousands of people are doing blackface and it looks like Sinterklaas just commands a lot of black people (even though they were never meant to be black just dirty from going through the chimney). It did allow people to basically disguise themselves while giving presents to children, like sometimes you could be given a present by someone from your neighbourhood without realising it but again it was basically doing blackface which I don't need to explain why that's bad.

I'm kinda sure, not overly so, that he's from the eastern Netherlands (from how he pronounced "rookworst") and eating raw herring although not unkown is definitly not as much of a tradition here as in most the rest of the Netherlands. Especially among our generation (as in mine and the guy in the vid) and younger, it is pretty rare to go to a fish truck to buy some raw herring and eat it. Kibbeling would be the go to. On the Enschedese Markt I see elderly, boomers and gen X eating herring, but I think it's primarily sold to German tourists lol

Sinterklaas used to be celebrated in more place now it is mostly in the Netherlands, the Dutch Caribbean A.B.C and S.S.S. islands and Belgium. I get why some people who see a black piet for the first time might find it offensive. But it is a century old holiday in honour of a Saint who helped the poor and slaves!!! Back piet is a representative of those slave who were saved and chose to help their saviour help others. If people looked into the history before they juge wil make a lot more sense!

Alot of people use swear words, im half ashamed that if ik starting ti lose it i do use cancer but the last time i seriously lost it was 17 years ago, i try however to stop doing it because everyone knows someone who has/had cancer, also trying myself to use "god dammit" but use misspelling to say it (instead of "godverdomme" ill say "hotverdomme")

Sure the Black Petes would be ok in the States as well, as its all about the story. They were his helpers, not his slaves . And as they climbed down the chimnees (to bring presents) , its hard to stay clean. It has never been any problem here, untill people started comparing Black Pete to Blackface. Stupid imo, people are way too sensitive nowadays. Some (conservative) areas in the country still have Black Petes as they are stickin to Dutch traditions. Besides that, i think the original Sinterklaas was not Dutch, but Turkish . As long as one comes to the Netherlands with an open mind, he/she (i guess i have to add 'it' nowadays 😉) will have a great time, no doubt 👍.
