Hello Dutch friend.. I am Spanish and first of all that song is the most emotional and heartfelt in the world.. I like it a lot.. But I will also tell you that no one has ever defeated us Spaniards, we were the most powerful and feared army in the world. .. Spain already suffered wear and tear as many empires have suffered.. But ours was the largest.. Spain was fighting against half of Europe.. Holland was for Spain a kind of Vietnam

@@felipebeltran2448 Hi, while I understand the well earned pride in your own country there are some things that are simply not true. First of all, the notion that the Spaniards were never defeated is obviously wrong. The Spanish Empire suffered many defeats. Some notable examples are; The Spanish Armada (1588), Battle of Rocroi (1643), the loss of your colonies in the Americas, the Spanish-American war (1898) and many more. Regarding the Dutch; after prolonged resistance by the Dutch Provinces and subsequent military victories by us which culminated into the Treaty of Westphalia, the Spaniards eventually lost all control over our territory which was a huge economic blow for the Spanish Empire. This brings me to the last point that you made where you compared us to Vietnam?? (I dont know why you made this comparison since you never controlled Vietnam). However The Dutch provinces were more economically prosperous per capita than Spain due to our position as a major centre of commerce and trade, our almost unmatched financial innovation, industrialization and agricultural productivity as well as our urbanization and infrastructure which was superior compared to Spain. Thus, its quite disingenuous to compare us to Vietnam, a place which was lacking in quite a bit compared to our lands. Finally, you were never the largest empire, that achievement is held by the British.

The Portuguese defeated our enemy, the Sultanate of Malacca, the Dutch defeated those who escaped our pursuit, the Sultanate of Aceh and the Spaniards built a Catholic wall to prevent stop the process of Islamization of the entire Philippine archipelago

@@HighlyCombustibleReacts Yet, the 80 year war didn't start because of an invasion. It was a civil war, mostly for religious reasons. The fact that far-way Spain was the overlord, was not the problem. The rebels offered the sovereign rights to Elisabeth1 and the the German Emperor, but both were not interested. So they made it a Republic.

As a modern Dutch speaker, I can understand it still. Main difference is spelling.

'Boom en Stroom' (beam and stream) refer to the blockade of Antwerp (beam) and the Scheldt river (stream), in which Bergen op Zoom was key in protecting them. Had the Republic lost Bergen, Spain would have gained free and full access to Antwerp and the war of independence would be almost lost. Same happened during WWII, to open up Antwerp harbor for the allies, both banks of the Scheldt had to be liberated from the occupying forces.

For real, I have seen that series at least 40 times by now. Never noticed that. Another fun fact, some of the real Airborne veterans also participated in those scenes.

He knows the first part of your comment until "for the greater part"...don't know about the last bit though. But he has reacted on a lot of history regarding The Netherlands.

The Founding Fathers didn't sail from the Netherlands, that's a misrepresentation of historical fact. It is however true that the Mayflower did set sail from the Netherlands initially. It is also true that the Founding Fathers were largely inspired by the works of Johan de Witt (the republican leader of the Netherlands during the 2nd Stadhouderloze Tijdperk - Kingless era). Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis, you will recall, did not exactly meet a happy end. It is funny that so many people here who don't want a King, also want the Orange-White-and Blue back as a flag. Also known as the 'Prinsenvlag' whereas the red white and blue was known as the Statenvlag (States' flag) often held up in support of the Dutch republic. The United Republic of the Seven Provinces wasn't exactly a modern democracy though, it was a Patricianship where only the well-to-do (white) males, the Patricians, could exert influence in who would be named for things like city council or parliament. It was however the only republic in a Europe that existed exclusively of Kingdoms (except for the brief period Oliver Cromwell was in charge of Great Britain).

I can read old Dutch, its been taught by mine father, so the old lecture of books can still be read. Otherwise those books cant be read. Its difficult but even if you dont know any you can still read it and recognize words
