Well, two days prior to Beckenbauer's demise, football world lost another huge figure: Zagallo. A Brazilian legend that also won WC as player and as coach- R.I.P. Lobo, R.I.P. Kaiser.
What he touch became gold. WC, EC, all of it. They send the best player in 66 to stop him. Sir Bobby Charlton, winner of the golden Ball 66. 72 and 74 was all deserved. For me the best defender of all time. And then he did it as a Manager again. Rest in Peace Kaiser.
RIP Der Kaiser, greatly respected as one of the greats. I'm quite old so did see most of his world cup and euro games live on TV. He was a magnificent player and bestrode the pitch like a colossus.
The off pitch success is even more impressive considering he didn't want to become a manager or deal with football in general after his players career. He simply could not say no because he was such a nice and respectful person and tried to help. He didn't even have a license for coaching from the german football association until the world cup win.
As a defender who often ventured forward Beckenbauer needed someone to have his back and do the dirty work when a striker slipped through. Georg „Katsche“ Schwarzenbeck was his trusty sidekick. Hardly anybody remembers him. They said that Beckenbauer always left the field with a clean jersey because all the dirt was on Katsche Schwarzenbeck.
Zagallo died just recently, at age 92, he was the only person four times world champion, 58 and 62 as player in Brazil's team, 70 as manager and 94 as coordinator. He was know in Brazil by nickname "o velho lobo" (the old wolf).

I know that I am showing my age, but Beckenbauer was on the the first football players that I followed. This was back when I could only follow the World Cup every four years on television because that was the only way to watch it asides from the 1980' PBS show called "Soccer Made in Germany." This show showed video replay at least six months old. Times have come a long way for football in the states.

Beckenbauer was one of the giants who shaped the modern game. During his NASL days I went to see the Cosmos practice when they were in town and got to meet one of my football heroes. I was a lucky kid as over the years I met also met Cruyff when the Aztecs were in town. Both giants took the time to say a few words about training hard and practicing your weaknesses that stuck with me throughout my time playing a range of sports.
I had a friend in the restaurant I worked at that was from Mexico he obviously spoke not English. We both had a mixed bag of English and Spanish. We got it. Importantly, we both loved Football. Because of him I played as a Libero with the number 5 in the youth teams. I loved that role so much, almost like a defensive quarterback. I always thought that role had died out over the last 20-30 years of tactics development, 4 back line etc. But there definitely are great CBs that Interpret their role a bit like that, when their team plays a high line and build up play needs to come from the back 4. It's really a wonderful role.

He 100% redefined a defenders role, most defenders back then couldnt do 2 dribblings without loosing the ball , HE COULD, on top of that, his vision , and overall football inteligence was amazing
In my opinion the soccer in the 1970 was much slower then todays top teams. Still Beckenbauer was outstanding, also as Trainer and Manager everything He touched was succsess and he was a very gentle person in private life.
If I could make a comparison, I would say that he had a similar impact on the game as Bobby Orr had in hockey. Both players revolutionise the defending position in their sport as they are more than just trying keep the ball out of the goal and join up on the offense.
WHat makes Beckenbauer special here in Germany except of his great football skills and so on is his personality. He was on a weekly football late show as a co host. The lady who was doing the make up in the background said to a german bundesliga coach that Beckenbauer is the most friendly person in the house. Beckenbauers attitude towrds everybody and that he signed everybodys shirt after a game even if the plane had to wait becasue he did it really for the fans was what makes him special here. He never cared about glory. and that naturally. His football skilsl are top notch what makes him a even bigger legend here in Germany is his character. And that is the most precious thing someone can say about you after your passing :) He is a legend on and off the pitch. This video is good, but it really jsut shows him on the pitch. The Libero and sweeper are two different roles. Check out Laurent Blanc who was arguably the last great libero. He won the world cup(98), Euro(2000), and numerous club trophies.,
A modern Libero that many people talk about, is John Stones for Man City, if you're looking for a modern day example of his influence to this day. Btw, DFB Pokal is basically the German equivalent to the FA Cup.
There is a documentary from Balon that goes into hefty detail of Bayern's resurgence after the departures of Maier, Beckenbauer, and Muller as players, but the former two building the backbone of the front office and trying to rebuild Bayern Munich. For the 1980s, Bayern were actually struggling as the rising popularity and income of Serie A poached a good majority of players not just from Bayern but from all of the Bundesliga to join Serie A clubs. Some of Bayern's losses included Lothar Matthaus and Karl Heinz Rummenigge (and yes, the last name is exactly how it sounds) to join clubs such as Inter Milan to combat the Dutch trio of Van Basten, Gullit, and Rikjard.

beckenbauer got hit in the face by an older player at 1860 munich. ANd form that point forward he lost the will to play for them. He said so in his interview.
May I point out his best known move: The pass or shot with the outside of the foot. That obviously gives the ball the opposite spin, than with the inside and is considered much more difficult. Beckenbauer used this very often and with great success. He also drove the play from the back with easy and elegance while producing practically no turn overs. He does not have those flashy highlights, but his impact on the game was at his time immense!
Agree. As a rule the truly great players, such as Beckenbauer, don't look flashy. They make the game look easy and cruise through matches without appearing to break much sweat. I am English and this news upset me. Another boyhood hero gone.

For all their talk of "we're the cradle of football", and "ours is the best league in the world" (never mind, the league is 69.2% foreign players, 80% foreign owned, and the top five clubs are all managed by foreigners), England are arguably the weakest of the blue blooded footballing nations. Of the true giants of the game (England, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Argentina, and Brazil), only England and Spain have *not* won multiple World Cups. However, Spain have won multiple European Championships (England's best finish is second/runner up). Spanish clubs have won 6 of the last ten UEFA Cups, versus two English clubs over that same span. On the subject of Beckenbauer; he finished his career with NY Cosmos. That squad was an international darling. I don't believe the American public truly understood what they had. I have heard estimates of the club's aggregate transfer value in today's money, given natural inflation and the explosion of transfer fees. The Cosmos of the late 1970s would be, by some estimates, the second most valuable football club in the world. That club, which obviously included Beckenbauer, made a lifelong football fan out of me. I'm forever grateful.
