He was a troubled genius! People forget how hilarious he was but he was unpredictable and that affected his career, especially in later years...he had an I incredible voice and his impersonation of Elvis was amazing...rip Freddie 🇬🇧💖

It was the unpredictability that made him so famous. And that voice he puts on when he’s pretending to be serious, prim and proper, everyone knew there was something funny coming. So the anticipation was as funny as the jokes. He’s one of my all time favourites. RIP Freddie.

Squirrel, I’m so glad you’ve found Freddie. He was an absolute legend here in the UK. You talked about his timing. This wasn’t timing - I believe he was actually doing the speed changes himself. The guy was incredible. My dad was a huge fan of him. He loved his comedy and loved his singing voice even more, and always said he did the best impression of Elvis too. I have to agree after watching him sing with the Jordanaires, Elvis’ backing group. The guy was so bloody talented it’s unreal, and he’s sorely missed. But, I’m glad he’s getting a resurrection of sorts now through reactors.

I think it is more the timing of where and when to put the speed singing in, and that the band had to know where and how to play / stop ( reminds me of Spike Jones where every crazy instrument and interuption was meticiously scored yet sounded like ad hoc chaos).

It was event television whenever he was on. Freddie, Billy Connolly and Spike Milligan were the three comedians I was introduced to at a young age, and whenever they were on I was watching. I'm so glad you enjoyed Freddie. His "An audience with Freddie Starr" show was legendary. They basically gave him a stage and an audience filled with famous UK TV celebrities at the time. It was chaos.

The goofy sign language was part of the gag when after he yells VINCENT! This video always leaves me gasping for air and picking pieces of floor boards out of my teeth! A perpetual source of a good laugh, to send the blues packing!

The reason that everybody was laughing before he even started was because nobody knew what he was going to do next. He had a tendency to randomly attack talk show hosts, other guests or audience members. Most shows were too scared to have him on, but a couple loved him all the more for it. My favourite comedian growing up.

Though you know something these days purely cause of involving Hitler they would put a stupid trigger warning on screen even if they did show it. I mean, if even Allo Allo which most common sense people realise it was always WW2 slapstick and farce type comedy taking the rise out of the Germans (making it classic show in itself and huge ratings for BBC in its day)...can be hit with it whichever station or platform it was - then that particular routine you mentioned probably would also.

Freddy Was hilarious back in the day. The stuff he did on The Des O Conner show was pretty funny too. He was on there often and you never knew what he was going to do next. I remember one where Des is singing whilst Freddy comes out dressed as Hitler and starts goosestepping, fighting a giant inflatable octopus in the fountain and all sorts of crazy stuff in the background while Des still keeps singing. Amazing how Des managed to keep singing lol

First time I've actually seen you wiping away tears of laughter, and it's no wonder. Freddie was hilarious in his prime. Got to see him live too. Only he could get away with dressing like Hitler in white shorts and Wellington boots.

The speeded up and slowing voices he did, was not "good timing" to a playback, it was his actual live voice doing this! People get confused by this! He was THAT good! You should watch him singing "unchained melody", he does the same thing!

Freddie was a total one off We saw him a few times in the 70's at end of the pier shows and he was brilliant, kids could watch (and get that side of the joke) and my parents and grandma loved his adult side I remember he'd bound on to the stage and disappear down a hole😂😂 One of the other acts would be someone singing a slow ballad and he'd walk across the back of the stage in a thong They couldn't control him, which was why there is not much TV Brilliant comedian, entertainer and singer

Seen Freddie at the pier shows during the summer in the 1970's and 80's. His best show was 1977 at the Britannia Pier when he dedicated half his show to Elvis and he played it straight down the line. He broke down in tears during his performance.

It's called his 'Vincent' routine not because of any alter-ego, but because he's doing the song 'Vincent' by Don McLean, which is about Vincent Van Gogh.

There are two or three different performance versions of this as Freddie Honed it and did it for different audiences. So Frustrating as Freddie was a great singer doing things straight but the comedy brought in more paying punters. The headline from the newspapers of the 1970s "Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster" brought the fame.

This reminds of when Owen Paul and his band were supposed to be miming “My Favourite Waste of Time” on TV show Pebble Mill. The couldn’t hear the tape, missed their cue and stood still live on air for the duration of the song. Love Freddie by the way.

Freddie was the epitome of an era from genius and dedicated craft put into a routine using like you said multi level talents that made countless laugh. Now its all about cheap soulless jokes that, are mostly not even that funny. And unlike Freddie's decades of making people laugh and routines like this, certainly won't be remembered as long after.

Extremely unpredictable, but also hated crowds of people, very shy out of work, I helped him set up his restaurant and he knew a couple of my friends from his business, chain smoking outside before heading into the restaurant and bar, he was on TV quite a bit with his own An Audience With I think he did a couple of those and he would appear with his friend Des O'connor

Evening Squirrel……how you doing buddy…..please check out “ Freddie Starr Sings” uploaded by a chap called “GRAHAM WHITE” …..he does 4 songs with the Jordanaires….Elvis backing group, they actually backed him twice, and he’s one of only 3 singers they ever backed after Elvis died , he was a massive fan, and knew all the songs…..👍🇮🇲👌. You will be amazed 👌

He comes from Liverpool as I do he's a legend. Check out an audience with Freddy Starr. he will have you crying and your ribs aching with laughter. When you have seen it i highly recommend you check out another Liverpool legend called Ken Dodd you have to trust me when I tell you that he's even more hilarious it's also called an audience with Ken Dodd🤣😂👍

h was as mad as a box of spanners, but popular. I never watched a lot of his stuff as it was often OTT ( over the top ) . He was often in the press for indiscretions too. But his comedic talent was undeniable. The mad gestures were meant to be sign language for THE HARD OF HEARING. The ear chopping being a feed to that condition. Anyway, like you it provoked a laugh. Micro phone tricks seem to be a staple from that era. Norman Collier built a whole career on a dodgy microphone. You could look him up too.
