Charles was a real character, brave and loved by his men. A great tactician but perhaps not the best diplomat in the world.

Charles is literally a teenager at the start of the war and is defeating superpowers like Russia and you are not impressed? All the people he is facing are adults. Now Charles is however past 18 years old but this war is going to be long 21 years to be exact.

Charles actually fought with his army on the battlefield quite often and was not afraid of doing so.

@@SafavidAfsharid3197 Not at that time. At this time rules started staying in their palaces, Kings marching with their armies at the forefront was an idea of the medieval era. A noble idea but very outdated. In the middle ages a King would be surrounded by the absolute top tier soldiers, the best knights in the best armour. But this was the musketeer era. A bullet or a well placed cannon ball didn't care about skills or social standing, everything in front of them are "targets" and nothing else. Having your King within the range of a cannon was an insane risk now.

In this episode we also see the results of another ingenious Swedish tactic, which no one else was doing at the time, paying off for them: Swedish soldiers were not "just" trained elites, but swedish soldiers were also trained in *all* forms of combat regardless of their specific role. Which meant that any soldier could be sent to fill any role at any given time depending on the circumstances, and any soldier in the army was able to pick up and use any equipment they found themselves having under the circumstances. For instance, when the Swedes took over the Polish-Lithuanian canons and turned them on the Polish-Lithuanian soldiers, they didn't have to waste any time checking which soldiers knew how to operate and aim them effectively. All the Swedish soldiers knew how to do it, so they simply took them over and the very first soldiers there put them to use immediately.

One thing should be added to this. It wasn't just a brave (if powerhungry) king, but his army was one of the very best in the world at that time. It is said that they struck fear in their enemies just because when they marched forward they didn't flinch when comrades fell around them, they stepped over them as if nothing happened. You telling me that wouldn't freak you out? That was the high morale and trust in their king, because he was led by God - surely as an american you understand that sentiment, right? :)

It wasn't just their will to simply march forward. The force would march within fifty steps of the enemy (standard distance at the time was a lot more), fire a "double volley" (first rank kneeling, second rank standing) and then they would all attack with bayonets, swords and pikes screaming at the top of their lungs at the center of the enemy line. It is also important to know the Carolean Army was an army of protestant fanatics, to catholic and and orthodox men this was an army of heretics, not "infidels" or "enemies on the other side, but still christians", they where heretics. In many simple infantrymens eyes back then (people that could barely write, because that was reserved for the clerics) this was the dark army of Satan himself marching against them. Seeing them march over their fallen reinforced this idea "They aren't men, they are demons..."
