The Springhill Bump (bump is a mining term) was the first live from location TV broadcast in Canada, courtesy of the CBC. And it was American racism that disallowed Mr. Ruddick from going with the others. And Tyler, there was a whole rescue operation going on on the surface. When he yelled up -- not down -- the pipe, some Draegermen (mine rescue specialists) happened to hear them as they were moving toward the mine head. 75 men did die in the 1958 bump, and 81 survived. The depth of the mine was a little over 14,000 ft; deepest in the world at the time. This was national news. Oh, and Springhill is where the singer, world famous, Anne Murray is from.

238 men were killed in the Springhill coal mines in 3 separate bumps, 1891, 1956, and the one in 1958. There's a male vocal ensemble made up of former coal miners called "Men of the Deeps". A line from one of their songs goes: "There's blood on the coal and the miners die, on the roads that never see the Sun nor sky"

Canada has Old Age Security (OAS) and Canada Pension Program (CPP). OAS is open to all seniors 65 and over, with a net income maximum to be eligible. CPP is more comparable to American Social Security, in that Canadians pay into it over their working lifetime, and receive monthly payments in retirement.
@MelioraCogito
@MelioraCogito 4 месяца назад
There is also the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) which tops-up OAS for low income seniors, with net annual income below 21'600$. In 2012, the Conservative government passed a bill that would have made the eligibility age for OAS/GIS (Guaranteed Income Supplement) move upwards from 65 to 70 starting in 2023-those born in 1959 would have to wait until age 66 (2025) to apply for OAS/GIS; those born in 1960 would have to wait until age 67 (2027); and so on, until those born in 1962 (or later) would have to wait until age 70 (2032+) to apply for OAS/GIS. After the Liberals formed the government in 2015, the changes made by the Conservatives to OAS/GIS age eligibility were restored to age 65, regardless of year of birth.

Canadian citizens enjoy the most personal freedom of any country from my perspective. Add in universal healthcare, sensible firearms regulations, mandatory maternity leave, child care benefits, cannabis legalization and many other positive benefits that Canadian citizens have a right to that citizens of some other countries do not have a right to, it's no wonder why Canada ranks so high amongst all the countries in the world. The Old age pension is still provided to all Canadians over the age of 65, it is a residency benefit. You must be a resident of Canada, and if you earn less than $72,000. annually you get a full $600. per month, it will be clawed back for those earning greater than the 72K. This pension increases with the cost of living, it has an additional guaranteed income annual supplement to bring low income people who have lived at lease 40 years of their adult (after age 18) life in Canada up to $25,000. per person or $30,000. per couple. Canada also provides a Canada Pension Plan, similar to Social Security for people who have worked in Canada, and contributed to it. CPP is paid for with employer and employee payments of 5% each of your annual income to be paid at age 60 for early appliers. The pension increases if you continue to contribute and if you wait until you reach up to age 70, it increases monthly by a percentage for a total increase of about 36% if you wait and contribute as long as you can. It is meant at age 65 to replace about 25% of your average pre pension income.

The Canadian government pension plan is called CPP and is based on your contribution from employment income and is mandatory to contribute to by both employees and employers on the employees behalf. Old Age Security (OAS) is a government pension /social program Canadians receive that is based on the number of years you've lived in Canada and not on income. The third government pension /social program Canadians can receive is Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) and is a top up program for seniors with particularly low incomes, that they can receive as long as they are eligible and collecting OAS. With all 3 pensions together, the maximum collectable is around $3100 per month, if you retire at age 65. If you also have a private pension from an employer, the GIS will be clawed back by the government over a certain level of total income (saving it for needy seniors only). Like our healthcare, it's actually a decent social program. Most of the decent social programs that have been developed over the years in Canada originated with the rise of the the CCP (Canadian Communist Party that later became the NDP) in Manitoba in the years after WWII. The programs aren't perfect but they genuinely help most retirees.

It WASN'T the CCP Party that did this (or the other help to Canadian social programs.) It was the CCF Party - (Co-operative Commonwealth Federation Party or FCC in French.) In the 1891 accident, 125 died; in 1956, 39 were killed; and in 1958, 75 miners were killed.

The Canadian Old Age Pensions Act began in 1927 and is now called Old Age Security. In the USA, the Social Security Act was signed by FDR on 8/14/35. Taxes were collected for the first time in January 1937 and the first one-time, lump-sum payments were made that same month. Regular ongoing monthly benefits started in January 1940. Today in Canada we have both the Old Age Security and Canada Pension Plan, the later being the plan employees and employers pay into, then upon retirement, the person receives a monthly payment from the fund based on the amount they paid into the fund. The OAS is a non-contributory pension for all people over 65. The new Federal Budget is raising the monthly payment to $1200. Chimo

The mines in Nova Scotia went out under the ocean. I went to a concert of a choir of coal miners called Men of the Deeps. They are such a wonderful group of men. My mum and I were supposed to go to their concert in 2012 but my mum died that day. A friend of mine and I went to the concert and one of the Miners in the lobby during intermission asked me if I was ok. I started to get a bit teary and the next thing I knew I was being hugged by this grandfatherly man and several others. Four years later I saw them again wanting to thank them for their kindness that day and before the concert I got hit by a car. I still went to the concert and sent a card back stage. They dedicated a song to me that night during their show and the miner from four years earlier who started the hug remembered me asked me how I was doing, I told him about being hit earlier that day and this coal miner tells me “I’m a tough little girl”. I came close to crying again. I hadn’t felt that much love since my mum died. Old age pension is what the US calls social security and it start at 65. This program is still in existence.

Old Age Security (OAS) is money you get at age 65 and depends on how long you have lived in Canada (at least 10 yrs) and goes up in value the longer you live here. We also have Canada Pension Plan (CPP) that you can start collecting (at a discount) at 60. If you wait until 70 you get more than you would at 65 but it’s your choice. It is employment guided. If you are married and your spouse dies you get part of their benefits until you die. I’m not sure how US social security works but it may be more like our CPP that we contribute to through our pay and employer adds to it also. You still have to have a retirement plan to get by.

It's called Old Age Security now, or OAS, and it is not at all like US Social Security. CPP, the Canada Pension Plan is more like your social security. OAS is a different benefit, that has nothing to do with paying into it, to get something out of it... It is available to any senior(65+). You may get either one, or both, depending on your particular situation. So yes, it was/is important, as some folks may not have had enough earnings to have paid enough into CPP to get much, whereas OAS is not based on lifetime earnings, but rather your age and financial situation in your old age.

But just for fun, to prove me wrong try asking 10 people in your life who are either people of colour, women or queer if they think racism, sexism and homophobia are a thing of the past in Canada. If they aretold that they should smile more or be less aggressive at work. If they are yelled at on the street for holding their partner's hand. If they are followed around stores by security.

@@WandaMay22 The subject came up a lot at work. Don't forget, A lot of the immigrants came from places where this was an actual problem. That's where the 'Moses' moniker came from, i.e. The wise man in the corner office that will help you with your problem. Didn't care for it for many years but it stuck. So I've heard all sorts of issues, including racism in there previous country. I don't quite go back to Diefenbaker's time so can't speak to that. I also absolutely do not agree with inherited guilt. From any country. All I can speak to is my observations. Which I gave in the OC.

Tyler, I sincerely do not mean to be rude, but can you let the entire one minute video play. Fairly certain RU-vid will allow that and react after. It’s difficult sometimes as the story is “choppy” and you ask questions or make assumptions. I love the research prior to playing video. Thank you for highlighting there is 100 Heritage Minutes. All, everyone, gets OAS from the country. And there are spousal supplements to your old age security. ( which makes a lot of sense if spouse is a bit younger and not yet eligible, but reliant on household income a as homemaker) It is not the security you pay in - that comes off your pay check, and can claim at after 60 when you choice to - aka CPP Canada Pension Plan. OAS is not much, but is better than nothing for the elders. The elderly poor, ( hate that word as no one wants to be thought of as poor after working so hard , but there is no other word when you can't pay all the inflated bills), well is not good situation here in Canada, but I have no idea what the old do in the us without that small bit of guaranteed security check from the country.
