Thank you for watching me, a humble American, react to another Red Faces segment on Hey Hey it's Saturday! I love this show. Thanks for subscribing for more Aussie reactions!
Red Symonds originally graduated from university with a BSc in pure mathematics and after his music group days went on to TV and radio hosting. He was very witty and generous with his time, supporting good causes.
I went to an event years ago, that had a studio crowd do IQ tests in real time! Red Symonds was there and topped everyone with the highest IQ! During this event gender, education, ethnicity and hair colour were scored against each other as well, and the statistics were shared during the event! I am never surprised by the fact that redheads have the highest overall intelligence any more - and blondes the lowest! Watch out for the brunettes, the quiet achievers! 🤗👍
The character in the blue hat that pops up is called Dickie Knee. It’s called Red Faces after the guy with the curly hair Red. He is known giving nearly everyone low scores and being harsh. Oh, and probably because they all had red faces after doing silly things on tv lol
The name Red Faces was a pun based on the idea of being "red faced" as in embarrassed, like you said but it was also a play on the title of a tv talent show at the time called New Faces.
Red Symonds was in an Australian band named Skyhooks. I thoroughly recommend you review the video clip for the bands song Horror Movie. It was filmed in Melbournes iconic Luna Park
That was fun! I forgot how funny Daryl and Red were, sarcasm rules, Saturday nights at home were cheap and entertaining with these guys! 👍 Thanks for showing this! 😁
For 25yrs this show was a hit, it was a time when you could laugh at yourself and take the mickey out on others without being "cancelled" . We had a ball
Happy Arvo Ryan and Jas! Since you like Hey Hey, you have to check out Pluka Duck. The mascot of the game, Puck A Duck, on the show. Pluka is hilarious and cheeky as hell.
Red Faces was a small but integral part of Hey Hey, and people loved to hate Red because he was mean and gave small scores on purpose. They used to get US stars as guests when they were in the country.
This show was such a religion for Aussies in the day.....Saturday Night must see tv before going out... you need to watch to learn about all the characters in the show... "Red" was in a famous Aussie band called Skyhooks.... check them out...... "Dickie Knee" is the head on the stick at the front of the screen... Ozzie Ostrich, Plucka Duck....the list is endless......
The show was a staple for kids of my generation. Then the whole 'Black Face' with Harry Connick Jr made international headlines when they had an anniversary special. That is a must watch..
That Harry arsehole was a hypocrite. He had done black face years ago and he totally missed the fact that those guys taking off Michael Jackson, were huge fans and one of them was a very dark skinned Indian guy.
Best 'Red Faces' performances on youtube - 'Hyde Park Boys' - 'The Music Men' - 'Old MacDonnel Hakia' - '12 Days of Christmas' - 'Bobsled Team' - 'The Amazing Nigel and Harry' - 'Red Symon's Song' ... Australian culture at its finest 🙈
After playing footy on a Saturday night eating fish and chips, watching hey hey, waiting for the rugby league to start. The 80s and 90s were happy time for me.
Oh damn, I remember this episode!! 21 jump st was one of my favourite at the time with Hey Hey also high on the list and this ep obviously stuck with me!! Crazy flashbacks
I'm not sure if you know this or not ?but (the bloke on the end) Red Symons was a guitarist in the band called Skyhooks, from the 70s /80s and were great , check them out
Hey hey it’s Saturday started out as a saturday morning cartoon show, but it slipped into some adult themes from time to time - mostly going over the kids heads. Over time, more adults were watching it, so they moved to a Saturday night time slot and the rest is history. Others have given you some of the history of the segments, but I think it is fair to say that for a while it was one of the most popular shows on Australian tv….. and yes, red faces was supposed to be a comical segment, not serious…. How is the bubba going? 👍👍👍👍
Dickie knee was literally a hat and a wig on a stick. He pops up in front of the camera and cracks jokes. There is a great compilation on YT you should react to
You are so lovely to be Aussie engaged. We really only had 4 channels in those days and Hey Hey was the only thing to watch on Saturday nights if you didn't go out. It was all very irreverent and spoke loads about what we were really like. I loved it. Laughed lots. Poor visitors to Aus did not know what to think of us. Such colonials. Overseas artists did not really have anywhere else to showcase themselves before a show either so that is how they were introduced to us. Not all were happy either. John Blackman was the voice of Ozzie Ostrich and all the voices that you hear come in and give little remarks. We were just as we really are but are trying so hard not be nowadays. Red Symons was lead guitar for an old band Skyhooks who were well loved. He always played the nasty crank one. I do believe he has a Master's in Mathematics, so, no idiot. Innocent days they were. I also just loved Darryl Summers. He was so happy and funny. You should visit Aus Ryan. The whole show is actually hilarious not just Red Faces. Ah but I am actually laughing at you with the "Happy arvo". Cracks me up. Such a sweet little thing to say :) We would use the word arvo in a context more like this. " I will be there in the arvo or it will be done by the arvo or this arvo when I get home. So cute.
Small correction: Whilst John Blackman did many of the character voices, such as Dicky Knee, he did not do Ozzie Ostrich. The person responsible for Ozzie was Ernie Carroll, a man of incomparable wit and talent. He was one of the main reasons the show became a hit actually!
But don't forget, between 1986-1989 most families (well, ok, mine!) would actually fight on Saturday nights at 6.30 as to whether we'd watch Hey Hey or Young Talent Time. Usually we'd just tape Hey Hey and watch it Sunday mornings and watch YTT before being sent to bed!
Probably mentioned, but this LIVE TO AIR show had a running sheet and just about everything was ad lib which was why it lasted so long. Red was in the Australian rock band Skyhooks and was not just a talented musician but a well educated, intelligent guy. The host Darryl went on to be the host of Dancing With The Stars in Australia. Danny, a local singer/celebrity was once married to Julian MacMahon (Hollywood Actor) whose late father was a former Prime Minister of Australia. Johnny Depp … well the World know how famous he is. I enjoyed this trip down memory lane when the family religiously got together for a laugh in the early part of the evening on a Saturday.
@@EEmB Wow, cognitive dissonance there for sure. The CIA ran Hollywood until Trump dismantled them as they are cabal. All those that had money and fame sold out on us humans by signing their souls away to the devil and participating in chi**ld sac**rifices. Tell me, did Johnny Depp have money that he got from working in Hollywood? Did he get fame? Then why has he been executed. WAKEY WAKEY
In the UK we got Australian soaps, and some of them went down brilliantly, running for decades... Kyle Minogue started on one of them called "Neighbours" - if you know who she is???
Three things: 1) It's not cringy because it's supposed to be like that and we loved it. 2) The middle finger is not a thing in Australia so she was not giving it. 3) Johnny was trying to join in - he loves wacky comedy - but a little unsure of himself.
The shtick with Red is that he hates all the acts and always gives a bad score. But because he's the last judge to give a score, he gets to dictate who wins.
It makes sense to leave him as the king-maker (so to speak) since he's the regular of the show, and the one who probably knows best the kind of talent they get in. It's actually kinda great how they balanced it out.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eORq1-xAesE.html Skyhooks were famous for the songs “living in the 70’s” “Jukebox in Siberia” “ All my friends are getting married” etc etc, Red Symonds (Red from hey hey it’s Saturday) was in this band…
13:00 One thing you have to know about the segment is that some people used it to promote their thing. It was pretty standard practice for student events at university/college to try to get on in order to get the free publicity for whatever they were doing.
Redmond Symons is an English-born Australian musician, and television and radio personality. He was the lead guitarist in the band Skyhooks, the snide judge of 'Red Faces', and a judge on talent search show Australia's Got Talent.
Hey Ryan I’m Aussie and I just came across your channel. We consider America as our big brother and we have a very Americanised culture. Watching you review old Australian shows and people brings back so many fond memories… it’s so normal for us but I can imagine our 80s culture is so weird and quirky for you…
Dude check out Lano and Woodley’s appearance on Hey Hey it’s Saturday. They are a great Australian comedy duo and their act is hilarious. Highly recommend for your next Hey Hey video
There were 2 or 3 specials they did that were the “Best of” Red Faces. If you search around you may find them. One of the best acts ever was “The Music Men” who earned a perfect score if I remember correctly. They may still be at my parents place on VHS somewhere.
Hay Hay it's Saturday was the one TV show you watched before you went out clubbing. It was so long ago ican't remember exactly, but Hay Hay use to be on Saturday or Sunday mornings when it first started. Then it went to Saturday nights from 7:30 or 8:30 till 10:30.
I remember hearing that Johnny Depp said back in the 90s how much he hated working on Jump Street and never wanted to talk about it again now he became an indie movie star.
Lol hence the Red faces.because they get up there and embarress themselves ha. Red cops it because he got off on being the mean one but in a nice..ish way. Red is Red Symonds , he played guitar in an Australian band called Skyhooks. Yes the blue hat is just that on a stick but pops up and gives the guests and everyone really a hard time, he is hilarious. Danni is the sister of Kylie Minogue.
I grew up on Hey Hey since the beginning. Saturday mornings to Saturday nights. It was way better when Ozzie Ostrich was in it. Quick-witted bird. Such a hilarious and chaotic show. John Blackman was the voiceover guy who did many characters and Murray Tregonning was the brilliant sound effects guy. So many years and so much fun. A true original. It wasn’t trying to emulate any overseas format. Try to seek out some earlier shows. I love what you’re doing and you have a wonderfully expressive face. 😊
Loved Red Faces. Hey Hey was just a bit of stupidity for a couple of hours a week. Red Simmons was a member of Ozzie band Skyhooks. You are right, JD should have seen into the future, and told himself, don't go near anyone whose last name rhymes with turd 🤣🤦🏼♀️
There is a Hey Hey it's Saturday channel/website if you want to watch more comedy gold! Oh and the blue hat is Dickie Knee. As HHS was a night time show by this stage, Dickie was a lot ruder than Agro with his one liners.
Hello Ryan the guy who gave the score 3 , he’s a red face he always hit the gong. 👍I hope to hear from you soon.🌺🦋🌈💖❤️😘😊🙏🏻from Edith in cairns Queensland Australia 🇦🇺
Fun fact. One day when Hey Hey it's Saturday was a Kids cartoon show on Saturday mornings, Daryl was late for work and so Ozzie and John Blackman,(up in the voice over booth) filled in with jokes, impersonations and introduced characters like Dickie Knee that changed Hey Hey into the crazy success it was famous for. The cartoons were eventually phased out because they ran out of time to show them due to all the fun. Adults suffering Hangovers woke up on couches to Hey Hey when the kids came in to watch the show early in the mornings and they loved it. Word spread causing it to be moved to 6.30pm and a major success.
Yayyy!!! I love it that you love it. They do it all off the cuff. They have one foolscap sheet written on both sides for the whole program. Red Faces is a take on New Faces, a much loved show, but without the hot flush of acute embarrassment. Schools put on Red Faces concerts just for fun.
Red was the resident nasty judge. He was in the band 'Skyhooks'. If you've never heard of Skyhooks, may I suggest you search fro songs such as, 'Ego is Not A Dirty Word', 'Living in The Seventies', 'Smut', 'Straight in A Gay Gay World', and especially, 'You Just Like me 'Cause I'm Good In Bed'. That song was banned on Australian Radio, so when JJ played their first song many years ago, it was that song. January, 1975.
@@cherylemaybury9967 Oh, don't get me started. I was a Skyhooks fanboy before fanboys were a thing. Women in Uniform, Lygon Street Limbo, Saturday Night, Ballwyn Calling, All My Friends Are Getting Married, Million Dollar Riff, This Is My City...I'll stop now. I had all their albums and a bunch of posters. I was lucky, in those days my aunty and my mother owned record shops in Brisbane. I had access to all the good shop posters and early releases of albums. It was fun times. I didn't realise how lucky I was.
Hi Ryan, glad your getting a laugh out of the old funnies. Well it’s time to kick it up a gear. Two guys called “Clarke and Dawe”, who cracked up Sydney Siders for ages. The skit that should start the ball rolling is “ the Front Fell Off”, or Quantative Easing
'I like the boy'---as the host of the satired talent show, New Faces, of the same era use to say. This was the ever-popular,, Bert Newton, who passed away this year. His son, Matthew Newton, a brilliant actor, has been living in the States for about 20 years.
The one who the hat on the stick is Dickie Knee voiced by hey hey it’s Saturday Announcer John Blackman I had a dickie knee cartoon book but I lost it hey hey it’s Saturday was a must watch every Saturday night here in Australia it was a great show they even mention it in the castle a great Australian movie
Great advice Ryan she was a disaster and a nut case! Red is booed because he usually has a snide comment and low score for all the contestants. The blue hat on a stick is called Dicky Knee and you should watch he whole show its a blast and all ad lib
Ryan, you might like listening to Click Go The Shears and Waltzing Matilda. Your interpretation of these classic Australian folk songs could be very interesting.
Dannii Minogue is Kylie's younger sister. "He's really game" means he's willing to try anything. The puppet at the beginning is called Dicky Knee and all you ever see of him is the back of his head.
The name Red Faces was a spoof on a serious talent show, New Faces, which aired about ten years earlier. Paul Hogan did a send-up of it once on his TV comedy show.
