I’m Australian, I was married to a Scot for 40 years until death parted us. His accent came and went, he was 15 when his parents brought him to Australia and after 40+ years here you could still tell he was from Glasgow even though his accent wasn’t as broad and he used a lot of Aussie slang….but if his family rang or he was talking to another Scot he instantly sounded as though he had just stepped off the plane. He scattered Scot words through his everyday speech and even more so amongst his family. He told me I had a special “wee beastie voice” for when I saw a spider or some other nasty little creature. Our “weans” picked it up and my daughter called her little brother “wee man”. As a result I know a great many words in the Scots language and can often pick up which part of Scotland a person comes from by their accent even though I have never been fortunate enough to travel there. I found this video very interesting.

When I was young I would get admonished for speaking Scots, both at home and at school. It was seen as lazy, slang or common. I was always told to speak "properly". There was a definite attempt to suppress the language.

Same but i completly ignored those people and it seemed to irritate them but being Glaswegian east ender i couldn't give a shite if they didn't like it. They stopped trying to get me to speak 'properly'.

Same. I remember one of my teachers giving us lessons in Scots, but he had to ask us not to tell the school because he would get in trouble for it, and that was only in the early 2000s!

To give you a kind of general idea. When I was a kid in the '80's and '90's you got told to speak and write "proper" English in school. Your phone voice is in "proper" English. When you go into a job you have be able to switch to "proper" English or you won't go far. You only speak normally with friends and family or in your local town. I did a few years in technical support over the phone. Even using my "proper" English voice, I've had people say my accent is "common" and "hard to understand" and I had customers from England who would ask to be transferred to someone who speaks English. A lot of our comedy and documentary shows get subtitled in English when played on English TV. There's been a resurgence in languages the last 20 years, along with the Independence movement. However, the way it went in my family was that my Grandad could speak Gaelic, Scots and English as a boy. My dad could speak English and Scots, and he could understand Gaelic, but not really speak it as a boy. I can speak English and Scots, but I can't understand Gaelic or speak it. Yet all of the official signage where I live on the west coast is in both English and Gaelic. (Not Scots.) For centuries they tried to write Scots off as a dialect or accent with slang terms. Spoken by the uneducated. The truth was Scots and English both come from the Germanic old English and then branch off into their own languages. Scots has it own words and grammar and wasn't affected by the great vowel shift in England. English on the other hand took on the great vowel shift and saw the influx of Norman French into the language.

When I was young Scots was spoken by everyone in my life unless I was at school or work when I had to try check myself and speak proper English. Now we speak Scots wherever we want now it's amazing

Proud Glaswegian here who has to applaud your fine self for your love of our country and culture respect to you good man! As for the language aye it was assimilated into the english language so much so one could argue that along with the GBP we also invented the language... as for the words you wondered, Wee= Small Bonnie = Pretty Scunnered = Upset/very disappointed Peely Wally = Pale in desperate need of a suntan lol

My late father (God rest his soul), was an extraordinary, sometimes secretive man, very well travelled and exceptionally knowledgeable. To this day I'm sure he could understand 'Scots'. Sadly I'm as dumb as a rock and haven't got the foggiest about the language. I'm also good at mimicking accents but for the life of me I cannot master the Scottish accent. I get so far and suddenly I'm speaking like I'm an Irishman... 😊

Ironically lots of Scots words are used in the English language and printed in the English dictionary. By the way 'Scots' is just a combination of Scottish words and English words. The Scottish writers wanted to leave out the Scots words so that their books would sell to a wider audience who could understand it. If i was a youtube reactor i would use an English accent purely because if i spoke the way i actually speak only Scottish people would understand me and my subscribers would be limited to the Scots. So i understand the logic behind Scottish writers leaving out the Scots words in there books.

We tend to pronounce Scottish Gaelic similar to the word garlic just without the r makes it easy to differentiate from Irish Gaelic

wee - small; scunner - a strong dislike/aversion to something (e.g. I took a scunner to that); bonny (or bonnie) - beautiful; peedie - little; peely-wally - pale, ill (e.g. he was looking awfy peely-wally). Scots Gaelic is pronouced gallic, while Irish Gaelic is pronounced how it's written, though it's just generally called Irish. I did an entire play in Auld Scots when I was a kid and I loved it. I learned a lot about the language through that. Yes, Mary Queen of Scots' first cousin was Elizabeth I of England. I doubt there would be any good videos (at least not any that aren't atrociously biased), but it might be worth googling Scottish Cringe which arguably had a huge impact on the Scots language. I was at the opening of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and remember Freedom Come-All-Ye being performed. I highly recommend watching Still Game, it's so funny and I think it's still on Netflix. I wasn't technically taught any Scots at school, in fact teachers could get in trouble for teaching it to us - though a couple did so anyway by going over Robert Burns' poems in class and asking us not to tell anyone. Some of my favourite Scots words are gallus, glaikit, bowfin, bahookie, coorie, stramash, shoogle, sleekit... there's so many!

As both the Magna Carta and the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scots and English Charters were both written in Latin as the origin of the language, thereafter added to by invasions. Scots is only a different pronunciation, with some added words as happens in different parts. The English like to own everything, from the Bank of England, formed by a Scotsman to even bacon and eggs as an English breakfast so, the issue is not the language, it's the English need to posses anything they can and possession of the British language is no different to the English need to posses.

There are two types of gaelic, "Irish gaeliic" (pronounced as gay-lick) and "Scots gaelic (pronounced gallick).

Wis fair chuffed wi yon blethers .try reading a Broons annual .or Oor Willie annual .I was given six strokes of the leather belt on my hands at school because a male teacher heard me say the word AYE instead of YES we were forbidden to speak Scots i was seven years old ( I didn't cry ) I have spoken Scots every day of my life since then . I am in my seventies now . UP YOURS teacher ..

Wee means Small. Bony means Beautiful. Scunner means to have a strong Dislike. Peedie means Small or Little. Peely-Wally means Pale and Sticky.

Cpl wrong m8, scunner means gutted, heavily disappointed. If someone say something or someone has scunnered them, it means it's really let them down to the point of being almost sickening. And peely-wally means looking ill, basically when you hit a whitey, you become peely-wally. Another way of saying 'you look a bit under the weather.' e.g Are you feeling ok, you look a bit peely-wally?

As well as its close relationship to Old English, Scots contains words related to/adopted from French, e.g. "bonny" from the French "bon/bonne" meaning good or beautiful; "peedie" from the French "petit/petite" meaning little/small. The Scots and French had a close relationship (in joint opposition to the English) several centuries ago. (Check out the history of Bonny Prince Charlie...)

I was taught Scots descends separately from Old English. For English: Old English (Anglo-Saxon) ➡️ Middle English ➡️ Early Modern English ➡️ Modern English For Scots Old English (Anglo-Saxon) ➡️ Scots (over time but separately from English) Welsh is a separate Celtic language. It is in the same overall grouping as Scottish Gallic and Irish Gallic, but slightly removed from them. Note that England used to have its own regional languages. Cumbric from Cumbria is now extinct. Cornish just survives and Manx never quite died out on the Isle of Mann. (The Isle of Mann is not part of England.) Many parts of England do have their own dialect words but remain mutually intelligible.

Today, around 40% of Irish people can speak some Irish, and 3% speak it as their first language. This video is about John Henry (1915-1998), a fisherman and traditional storyteller, who was the last known person who spoke ONLY Irish.

If you watch Disney's Brave there are a couple of characters with broad Scots particularly the doric speaking prince. Unfortunately I was raised to be clear spoken so my grasp of doric is mediocre at best.

I’m baffled. They tried to strip away the Scotts language, but they never tried to get rid of the Welsh language? No offence to the Welsh, but the Welsh language is a bit messed up.

They absolutely did try to get rid of the Welsh language and the whole of Welsh culture! Starting from when Henry VIII united Wales with England, Welsh was outright banned and as recently as 19th century, children were punished in school for using it.

@@scottishemmaa2457 we had known each other for forty years. They came from Derbyshire. Every time they came up some nasty little dig would be said. This time I wasn't the nineteen-year-old they had last seen. They told the police it had been a joke but with the ever-growing diaspora of English coming to live here or have a holiday home here - it is very beautiful, the incidence of racial comments was growing exponentially. Local kids gave what they got until one kid made a remark that seemingly offended an English. That ended up with the Scottish kid being charged with some racial charges being made but I have no idea what those charges are.
