Europe used to have its own continental plate, and used to be a continent in its own right like Africa and South America, until about 250 million years ago, when the European plate smashed into the Asian plate, and the Ural mountain range was formed. Since then, the two plates have been fused together. So at least the eastern geographical border of Europe is not an artificial construct; the border around the Caucasus gets a little more fuzzy though

In France we just have 5 continents since Australia and Antarctica are just considered to be island. However, the idea of Oceania (including Australia and New Zealand) is sometimes considered to be a "water" continent.

One of those interesting bits of history Denmark invaded and then colonised england but also set colonies on icland and greenland through their relationship with the norsemen, some of them also braved the sea down to the Americas. The Japanese anime “vinland saga” accounts some of this

Great reaction, i learn 5 continents in my south american country, later in life i discover people in the US and Canada separate North and South America, and Europeans separate Europe and Asia. But now my opinion is there should be 4 continents based on big landmasses separated by oceans like the first definition (or even 3 if we consider Australia to be just a big island instead of a continent).

Slightly random, but sice the Straits of Bosphorus were mentioned. The battle there between the Sultanate of the Ottoman's and the Christians, with the chains across the straight, is an incredibly interesting one.

Kardashian is a traditional Armenian surname. PS, geologically speaking there's yet another continent, it's just that it - Zealandia - is 90% underwater! It's an area of continental crust which includes New Zealand, New Caledonia, various smaller island groups, and a lot of ocean. FWIW, even here in New Zealand we consider Oceania as a "continent" politically.

Where you don't learn about Antarctica?? I'm from latin america, and have a ton of friends in other parts of the region, and we always learn about Antarctica as a continent. The only discrepancy i found with friends is about Europe/Asia or Eurasia; some countries teach the combined form, others a separation in the Urals.

It is complicated because the physical reality of 4 continents (by surrounded by oceans definition) is not useful for most things. The tectonic plates definition is useful for geology but little else. And none of them are as useful in a human reality as arbitrary borders based on ethnicity and history. Of course no continental definition can survive the irrational thought process. Example, Canadians and US citizens seem to not think of Mexico (which is part of NORTH America) as anything other than part of Central America or even South America (which it is definitely not.) Mexico is as North American as it gets, but try telling that to most US citizens. The term 'Latin America' is their clever way of suggesting that the bottom part of North America is located along the Mexico border.

What is an example of conurbation?, careful how you say it. One example of a conurbation is the expansive concept of the New York metropolitan area (the Tri-state region) centered on New York City, including 30 counties spread among New York State, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, with an estimated population of 21,961,994 in 2007. google. What is another word for conurbation? municipality metropolis city urban area urban sprawl built-up area megalopolis cosmopolis megacity burg plus 44 more on google.

The problem is that there is no internationally agreed definition of "continent". I've seen loads of memes on the internet relating to continents that people endlessly argue about in the comments as people from different countries were taught different continental models. Same with South Americans getting annoyed when US citizens are referred to as "American" as in their languages / education systems, the term "American" stands for people from the continent "America". But in the view of the English-speaking world there is no continent called "America" as there are 2, so the word "American" wasn't taken and therefore can be used for US citizens. There is no right or wrong in this, it's just what you have been taught.

@lmoelleb
@lmoelleb 7 месяцев назад
You can travel from Greenland to Chile without having to cross an ocean. The current plan is for Canada and Greenland to share a land border (awaiting ratification as far as I know).
@Denis-Maldonado
@Denis-Maldonado 5 месяцев назад
Big emphasis in "vast" landamasses separated by oceans. And that's why the debate about Australia being an island or a cointinent arise. Australia has more landmasses in the form of Indonesia between them and Asia, than Iceland and Europe.

Were you aware that "Caucasian" technically means "white Asian"? At least that's what I was told 20 years ago...
@robertstallard7836
@robertstallard7836 7 месяцев назад
Unfortunately not. The clue is in the "Caucas" bit. As in "Caucasus" (Latin) or "Kaukasis" (Greek) Referring to the Caucasus Mountains in Eastern Europe. It originated in the 1700s when scholars such as Voltaire thought Europeans came from the Caucasus Mountains, where people supposed Noah's Ark landed after the deluge. In other words, not Cauc-Asian But Caucas-ian (Like Canad-ian, or Paris-ian, or Venus-ian, or any of the many other "-ians" you might think of). There is a grain of truth to your claim, though, in that the word "Caucasus" itself is from a Scythian word "kroy-khasis", literally “(the mountain) ice-shining, white with snow.”
