The one in the art gallery is even funnier, as Cook gets Dudley going and you can see the glint in his eye as he tries to get him to break down into fits of laughter.

Half passed eleven at night, standard time for getting home after getting kicked out of the pub at closing time in those days. Last orders 10.50 11.00 closing 11.10 kicked out after drinking up time, in my area, in summer half an hour earlier in winter. Sometimes got lockins till o'crack stupid o'clock

Gosh this brings back memories from my childhood. Much loved comedians. What is funny is that they are both from Oxford or Cambridge, Dudley Moore was a brilliant jazz pianist, so they are playing in the most working-class accents. I loved the characters. I saw the other guy, Peter Cook in a cafe in Hampstead about 30 years ago! May they both RIP.
@santajohn9314

Peter was always sometimes on purpose and sometimes not, making Dudley lose it or most often coming very close to totally cracking up. Sometimes Dudley the short one would recover and make Peter the tall one lose it. This was their trademark and all sketches like this one were totally ad-libbed. This was their trademark what they were known for and what we all loved in the UK.

There’s something wholesome about watching a Pete and Dud sketch, because once Dudley starts laughing, Peter just rides it to get him to laugh more and that makes him laugh as well. The art gallery one’s the best for that.

Got in one, Electric...one upmanship...Dudley Moore came from a very working class family, and was raised just a few streets from where I was raised...Dagenham Essex. His "one upmanship" portrayal was typical of that area, AND in that accent!! Miss these two guys, very much! Thank you for playing it...Great to see it again!!!

These old sketches are excellent. Totally ad-libbed and both of them trying to get the other to lose it and laugh. The reference to 11.30 pm is because the pubs would call 'Last orders' at 10pm to 10.30 pm and closed by 11pm. They released an album in the 70's starring two similar characters (Derek and Clive) but they were a lot ruder. A lot. No limits, basically. The album was called 'Derek and Clive Live' and it's worth hunting down.

I know I'm a week behind so probably this won't be seen by anyone, but if you can find the episode of Clive Anderson Talks Back when every guest was Peter Cook it really is worth watching. Clive Anderson Talks Back was a pretty standard weekly talk show but for one week they decided to break from the usual set up and instead had Peter Cook improvise 4 different characters for Clive to interview. Watching them both try to roll with wherever Peter Cook's mind took them was wonderful.

In the bad old days licencing laws meant you could no longer consume alcohol in a bar/pub, so at 11pm ALL the pubs would empty out of mainly blokes that had just downed as much beer as possible bufore the landlord called Time, so 11:30 is approximately when must chaps would arrive home in a very merry state. Ergo 11:30 is an indication they were arriving home extremely drunk. Hence all the strange imaginings

I only know this through my Dad, who was a huge fan of Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan, the Goon Show, and Monty Python... I rememeber having a conversation with my Dad about one of these sketches, and my Dad tried to explain the satirical element... ....here you have two "working class" men, in a pub.. but what we could never expect is the dialogue and intelligence of these two characters... noone expects the working class, with such thick London accents to have such eloquent discussion ! And the lunacy that ensures 😂 I didn't fully understand at the time, but I certainly do now ! 😄👍
