I worked in a polling station one federal election. Yes, people come in to vote very casually dressed. The most memorable for me was a young lady who presented at my desk for a ballot, wearing a grass skirt, and a top consisting of some straps, and two half coconut shells. I was temporarily lost for words.

4:58 from my many decades of experience with native Australian plants , I can confidently say that from the colour of the leaf it is in fact new growth of around 2 - 3 weeks old. New growth on many Australian plants starts off red before transitioning to the colour of the leaf held by the quokka. It then darkens until it reaches mature colour. IMHO the most beautiful thing to see is the Australian bush in the height of Spring. Trees and bushes highlighted with red and light greens. Fluffy White, Red and Yellow flowers everywhere . It hard to put into words without writing a 5000 page essay the sights sounds and smells of the springtime bush.

Cig prices are entirely designed to drive people off cigarettes. Apart from revenue of course. Cig packs are also covered in warnings and gruesome imagery of cancers and can't use branding - they are brown with text and cancer pics. Last survey found a smoking rate of 11%. In the 1970s about half of Australians smoke - three-quarters of Australian men and one quarter of women.

At least if you feed the Magpie it remembers you and won’t swoop you. The Plover has its nest on the ground and anyone who comes within about 25 metres will get attacked. He shot the mother and her 4yr old daughter then chased the little 6 yr old girl around and around a big trunk of a tall tree like he was a big brother laughing and teasing her as she screamed,. Then he just shot her dead and ran off to kill more people.

Context about the guns. The government offered $600 per gun in a buy back scheme. Most of the guns turned in were old and/or unregistered. Many gun owners saw it as an opportunity to deal with that problem old gun. Maybe in the shed left by Pop, or simply old, in need of maintenance and untrustworthy. They then used that money to replace the old unregistered guns with new ones and hold them as legally registered. It didn't end gun ownership in Australia. In fact, it is now estimated that there are more guns in Australia than there were then. The crims and gangs didn't turn in their unregistered guns. So, the gun buy back didn't do much to disarm the Australian public, but it did clear out a lot of the old problem guns that people were clinging on to. All on the taxpayer coin.

🇦🇺💙💛✌ 🇺🇦 Yeah, nah, spread out, the spider on the wall would not cover an average adult hand. I just had one such large huntsman trying to come in through the sliding glass back door which was closed as summer has decided to finally kick in in autumn in my neck of the woods in Victoria and it is hot. I was debating whether or not to let him into the relative cool of 26degC indoors when the geriatric cat-from-hell who had taken off before dawn, also turned up at the door. She immediately spotted the spider, did the "cat spooked" thing bouncing four paws in the air backwards and into pounce mode. I really like these big guys. They don't build webs, they don't make much of a mess on your walls but I just don't like one hanging on the wall right above where I lay my head to rest at night. I wasn't going to let cat kill spider, so I caught him easily enough and returned him to the backyard.

A FoGo bin - names vary from Council - County - to Council - is a local government initiative to help reduce waste and landfill. All green material that can be composted, goes into a provided kitchen small plastic bin with matching provided compostable, bio degradable, organic liners. These are then emptied into large green bins for kerbside collection. They go to farms and other areas to be used as compost etc. They come with stickers that tell you what can and cannot go in. So basically three large/small bins in Australia. Red for landfill. Yellow for recycling and Green for organics. Red bins can be smaller.

And as a kid used to ride my bike in the streets with a gum tree branch in my hand just to try to keep the magpies from swooping me!! GREAT VID!

But the thing to remember about magpies, is they remember faces, so if they don't like you, they will pick you out of a crowd. If they do like you, they might introduce you to their offspring.

In Australia we don’t have a hunting for sport thing going on unless you mean rabbits. We don’t have large animals to hunt even kangaroos ( the biggest) you need a license to cull. Even crocodiles are usually caught live not hunted. So no need for guns for hunting. Many farmers use guns to shoot injured cattle and sheep but the average person does not usually have access to guns. Road trains are spectacular to see but to get past one takes forever. The magpies are a real problem because they swoop without notice, ( hence the sign) they go for your eyes and head very scary and persistent , can go on for 100 metres with no escape from them. Good on the people who feed them etc… and make friends with them but the sign is for people who don’t live in their area and are unaware that they can be violent.
@35manning
@35manning 3 месяца назад
Yep, camel shooting totally isn't a thing in Australia... Or wait, it is. Along with scrub bull, boar, a range of deer, goat, fox, rabbit and duck. Also wild dogs (not dingos) and cats. There is commercial shooting of course, but the vast majority of gun licences are "recreational hunting" and a good number of those do it for sport. As an "average person", I only have access to the dozen firearms in my safe, unless I go buy more of course. And it's not that hard to get your licence. Do a couple hour safety course, have a "genuine reason", a police check and some paperwork. Oh, and a genuine reason is easy to obtain, the Victorian government even sells "expression of interest to hunt pest species on crown land". A piece of paper that ONLY exists to prove that you intend to hunt so that you can get a gun licence. Oh, before I injured my elbow, I also used to compete in handgun shooting. Unfortunately the hard and fast reloading of my pistol magazines causes too much pain and I had to give that up.

@@35manning People not involved in shooting don't know how the licensing system works - but will feel free to "inform" you about how they think it does. What you said is broadly speaking accurate, but there are a few caveats... it is not a federal system - it is state based - but you can move imported guns between borders. I think a lot of the gun discussion for Australia needs to be better informed as to the nature of the licenses and how states and the federal government interact.

The trouble is when the Government introduces seriously high taxes on still legal products like cigarettes the other major problem it causes is high end crime ( remember the prohibition on alcohol in the USA early last century) because at the moment as we speak there is the criminal underworld here in Melbourne in Victoria state breaking into and setting on fire tobacco and vape shops by crime gangs just about every night it seems as they want to control the illegal out of control black market on cigarettes as the retail price is so high that it spawns the sale of smuggling in to Australia literally millions upon millions of cigarettes for the black market and the Victoria and Federal Police are like a dogs chasing their tails, they don’t know where to start as the crime syndicates use under age youths to do a lot of their initial dirty work also as they generally are too young to be charged or they get off on bail multiple times with just a slap on the wrist with a wet tram ticket, so unfortunately raiding the taxes to try and stop people smoking really just doesn’t work like a lot of other things in this world, if people stupidly want to slowly kill themselves smoking I reckon let them do it as the massive crime at the moment both in Melbourne and rural towns to businesses at the moment is the byproduct of these governmental decisions which clearly is not working, obviously there is big money to be made by the underworld to diversify into tobacco as well as their drugs

I figured that I already paid my share of taxes without the addition of the cigarette excise duty, plus so many locations became smoke free, making smokers virtual anti social. For what its worth, even as a smoker, taxing smokes is not a bad thing, a huge burden on our medical system. what is not reasonable is technology has given us a viable alternative in vapes. after a trip to NZ, where I bought a good quality vape and a stack of juice. didnt buy tobacco for 4 years. a bottle of juice would last me at least a month, I stopped taking smoke breaks, and felt considerably healthier. I had to replace the glass a few times, but thats about all I needed to throw out. then the Gov decided to ban vape imports. so your options are now either tobacco, absolutely terrible and overpriced prescribed nicotine ($30 high quality from NZ or $90 rubbish from the gov), or shitty disposable chinse under the counter from the deli quite happy to sell to 12yo's. its a terrible policy. sure, we dont know the health risks, but we know tobacco is awful for you in so many ways. and the vape doesn't make me cough up a lung in the morning with brown gunk. Its a risk im willing to take. only country in the world who does not think its a fair trade off and good idea.
