The 2 Ronnies was always a must watch. Sketch comedy needs good writing to fit the jokes into a short time whereas sitcom can have a slow build. It helped greatly that Ronnie B came from a background in repertory theatre where they did a different play a week. Much missed & no one comes close to replacing him.

Thanks I enjoyed this. I never realised how much actress Josephine Tewson was in Ronnie's sit coms or sketches until now. A good actress and comedian in her own right, but was good in sit coms such as Clarence, Last of The Summer Wine and Keeping Up Appearances. She was 91 when she passed away in 2022.

There was a series called Heroes Of Comedy which fits the format you describe, Squirrel ol' mate. One was dedicated to Ronnie Barker and another to Ronnie Corbett.

Growing up with him in my childhood, you took it for granted that you were going to be dealt laughs. Part of that, it has to be said, was because he had one of the top British sit-down comedians as his partner. When it all came to an end in the latter part of the 1980s, it really felt like an end of an era. And there was a crossover, where a younger generation were gaining traction at that time. But I think a lot of Brits (certainly in middle age and above) will agree he's one of the giants of British comedy.

From the thumbnail/title image of Ronnie, I thought this was gonna be something about Porridge? Best "sit com" that he was ever involved with. One of the best British sit comes ever in fact?

Memories of Stanley Unwin spring to mind with his mispronunciation, or possibly Hilda Baker, although I was a bit too young to appreciate them at the time.

A similar, behind the scenes video is "Open All Hours A Celebration" really interesting. The only drawback is that it is a BBC production so you may have problems.

Upon further investigation on the BBC website, this is the second part of a 2 part series. "A Man of Character" - 1 of 2 and "Wiley by Name" - 2 of 2. Some of the sketches have been removed to get by the RU-vid "Content ID" system. Which probably made the first episode impossible to upload. As the first episode was about his characters, and the second episode about his writing.

Saw the look on your face when he mentioned his first sitcom. Who else immediately looked up “His Lordship Entertains”? The BBC may have lost it all, but good old RU-vid has found it somewhere. Well one episode at least. I know what I’m watching next😂

the dinner ladies / washer ups sketch in full - has that been lost to the world or are the BBC blocking copyright on it on YT anywhere - one of the cleverest song ones ever
@highpath4776

noting the ladies choir tune is based on ? (sand dance - Wilson , Keppel and Betty = worth a look at their routines - one retro introduced by Ray Allen - only three variations on YT as much they did wasnt filmed)

Porridge is still prime time on the BBC even after 40 years. Try the movie if you want to react, that was pretty good if you can find it and not likely to get a copyright strike.

That wasn’t a TARDIS, it was a K8 phone box which someone must have thought was a suitable replacement for the much more famous ones most people are familiar with. I thought they came out in the late 70s early 80s but I just looked it up, apparently they started in the 60s. They were never very popular. Haven’t seen one for years. I think they all disappeared a long time ago. Unlike the far more famous and much earlier K6 design. Nearly every village near me has one of those still, even if hardly any have a phone in now. Most have been turned into defibrillator cabinets or places for people to leave old books for others to take. I even saw one somewhere full of tomato seedlings of something like that. Presumably free to anyone who wanted some.

a lot of this featured the writing , rather than his time in rep, and in the Navy Lark , and the apperences in sitcoms that he didnt write.

If you can find them you should try the serial episode comedy dramas. When the series are repeated on the TV these are normally edited out for REASONS. I have all 12 series on dvd and I (I mean I know a friend) who ripped them all and spliced them together. They are between 60 and 90 minutes each but not every series had them, some had a few 10 to 15 minute stand alone sketches.

He used a pseudonym so the work could be judged purely on its merits rather than get a pass because it was Ronnie B...
