As an American I don't really understand British royalty. Today I am very interested in learning about the rules that King Charles must follow as the current monarch. If you enjoyed the video feel free to leave a comment, like, or subscribe for more!

The King is around 75 now, and until he became king (when his mother died) would have had to have a driving licence like anyone else, so he KNOWS HOW TO DRIVE already - but as licences are issued in the monarch’s name he doesn’t now actually need a licence. It’s not called His/Her Majesty’s government (HMG) as a joke.

Apparently we're supposed to hold the fork in the left hand and knife to cut with in the right, but... I can use a fork or spoon in my left or right, but cutting with a knife feels really odd and uncomfortable in my right hand so always use my left. 😂 I can use both hands for most things. Writing is a little easier in my right hand and cutting is easier in my left, it's kinda weird. 🤷‍♀️

The Queen was driving before she was Queen as she was an Army Vehicle Mechanic in WWII, so would probably already have a Driving License. The touching rule is not a thing anymore, so she's wrong. For the Queen it was compulsory but the King is frequently 'touched' in meetings and William and Kate often hug people, so the Royals are much more relaxed nowadays, and younger Royals will also take selfies 😂
@EmilyCheetham
@EmilyCheetham 6 месяцев назад
Well you are still not supposed to touch the royals without permission. But many of the royals see it as an outdated rule and sometimes choose to ignore it. However Kate/Catherine still sometimes carries a bag at some events so that she doesn’t have to shake peoples hands. So I think in this day and age it is the royals choice. The royals are a lot more lenient. However depending on the situation if you did touch Charles or one of the other royals you may get pulled off by body guards.

@ruthholbrook 6 месяцев назад
The Queen was driving before the introduction of tests. Until then, the license was simply to identify the driver and vehicle. Even now it's purpose is to identify the driver and carries the information needed (such as having passed the test). That information about the King is already in the public record. Not having a licence does not equal not having to learn to drive.

Fork and knife is the way USA folk say it. Probably because they use a fork ninety nine percent of the time. A knife is only used initially to cut up meat etc.... so a fork can be used upside down to eat food. As a child here in UK, I wasn't allowed to turn my fork upside down, but I do now, especially when eating rice or peas.

Just because The King doesn't need a licence, that doesn't mean he doesn't have one. The monarch is the ONLY person who's exempt from this and even the monarch's children must have a licence and therefore because Charles took so long to come to the throne, it's generally assumed he does have a driving licence because he'd have needed one for all those years whilst awaiting ascent.

I used to know a guy who's Granddad had been given a 12"x18" photograph of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Sir Winston Churchill standing in front of the shell of a bombed out building. I thought the photograph itself was pretty amazing, but then my friend took the frame off the wall to show me the backside. A fair sized rectangle had been cut out of the back of the frame so that you could see the backside of the photograph. In Queen Elizabeth's hand writing was written "For [Granddad's name] our loyal subject" along with the signatures of all three (The King, Queen and Churchill). I don't remember what his Granddad had done to receive the photograph, but knowing how rare it is for a royal to sign anything it was amazing to see both the King and Queen's signatures...plus Churchill's!?!? I so badly wanted to grab it from his hands and run...

The advantage of having a constitutional Monarchy is that no one person has power. The government rules, the King can't. But the government can only rule with the Kings permission. Nothing is law until the King signs it into law. Only the King can open and dissolve parliament. And importantly, the armed forces pledge allegiance to the Monarch, who is their commander in chief. It means that if one day the government of the day decided to do something crazy, like order the armed forces to seize every member of all the opposition parties and attempt to pass a law places themselves in absolute power (we think of that as a crazy notion, but lets remember the countries where such things have actually happened), it couldnt happen here. The King would refuse to sign such a law and the King would order the armed forces to stand down, which they would have to obey. I like that having the monarchy is essentially a safety mechanism to avoid that sort of thing

The King is head of the Church OF England- not the church IN England. (Although when Henry VIII broke with Rome he did create the Church IN England, but that was back when there was only one acceptible 'flavour' of religion in England. Nowadays there are many denominations of Christianity, and the King is only head of the CoE) 'Royalty' are allowed to voice opinions - it's just the Monarch him or herself who is supposed to remain neutral. That's one of the reasons Charles handed over a number of his previous roles to other family members.

As a matter of interest when I joined the Royal Air Force back in 1969 I, like every other new recruit had to swear allegiance to the Queen and her Successors for life and sign on the dotted line formally with a witness signature too. This means technically since I’m retired and getting my forces pension I am still under obligation to my sworn allegiance now to the King. We aren’t forced to give allegiance every single day!!! It’s an Honour thing once you’ve sworn your allegiance that’s it! Oh and we are not allowed to randomly fly the Union Flag on the side of the house or on our car for that matter. There was a time when Americans understood royalty only too well. Take a look at the following petition which demonstrated the absolute loyalty of the King’s American subjects. It began, “MOST EXCELLENT SOVEREIGN: We your Majesty's faithful subjects”… and it ended with “…that your Majesty may enjoy a long and prosperous reign, and that your descendants may govern your dominions with honor to themselves and happiness to their subjects is our sincere and fervent prayer”. This loyal address was signed on July 5th 1775. Amongst the 48 signatories were John Hancock (a very large signature as usual); Samuel Adams; John Adams; Benjamin Franklin… and Thomas Jefferson. If only these individuals had stuck to their word, Charles III would be King of America; just as he is currently King of Canada (where most of his ancestor’s truly loyal subjects moved to after the War of Independence).

Remember that the Monarch rules only with the consent of Parliament. That's been the case since 1688. People forget it but it's the foundation of our constitution - Parliament is supreme. As Wiki says, there has been a long-running debate regarding whether Parliament alone should have the power to declare war and more widely to commit British forces to armed conflict. This was attempted (to the limited extent of possible war against Iraq) in 1999 with the introduction of the Military Action Against Iraq (Parliamentary Approval) Bill. However Queen Elizabeth II, acting upon the advice of her government at the time, refused to grant her consent to allow the bill to be debated in Parliament and so it was dropped (Queen's Consent was needed before debate could take place because the bill affected the royal prerogative). But if it came to it, Parliament would win - that's what the Civil War was about.

Not requiring a driving licence and not requiring to pay for an excise licence, is the same as not being able to sue someone; the driving licence, excise licence, court, and tax office are all the monarchs, so he would be issuing himself a licence, paying tax to himself, and his court would be making a decision on his case; you can't take someone to court and make a decision on the outcome, the same way as you can't decide whether you are a good enough driver to award yourself a licence!!!

The Monarch and Heirs are often seen in the same vehicle when at one of the Estates, both Charles and Andrew have piloted the late Queen. We have to go back to Georgian times for the last Monarch to order British Forces into battle. The phrase "Just send a Gunboat" by Queen Victoria was more a suggestion than an order, if she actually ever said it.

The monarch doesn’t need a driving license or number plate because a driving license is issued in the monarchs name. Charles learned to drive when the late queen was still on the throne. He will now just never have to renew his license.

The monarch doesn't have or need a licence or a passport as he or she would be issuing it to themselves. Of course they can drive, they learned in their own land as young teens and then drive with a licence u til becoming the monarch. The monarch is probably more experienced and skilled as a military leader than some random in who because they become president. Even the late Queen served in Britain as a military driver in WW2 and royal men almost all serve in the navty, army or airforce. The no touching rule is a rule for others not to touch the monarch. It is not a rule the King must obey, but that others must obey towards them. Remember, Queen Elizabeth was in Africa when her father died. It would have shocked people in 1952 if she had returned to Britain while many were wearing black in mourning for him and his daughter and her got off the plane in a Hawaiian shirt and short pants. My Mum has a hand signed card from the current King and Queen. Everyone who reaches their 100th birthday gets one. I think this lady is a little confused over some things! Asking someone for an autograph is presumptious, almost rude here.

Tyler, members of the Royal Family tend to be maintained at the same weight forever so that - as The Princess Royal has famously demonstrated on several occasions - the same outfits can be re-worn, sometimes decades later...!

thing about a license is it is an ID#, The king is on the coins all he needs to do is show his wallet for an identifier and any car he has that HE is driving is likely on his land and probably has someone official nearby.

Actually young royals in line to the throne ARE allowed to travel with their parents up to the age of 12. After that they must travel separately.

When King Charles was the Prince of Wales, he gained a reputation for his "black spider memos" - named after his handwriting, actually caused a few stirs as some people viewed these as him overstepping his mark and meddling in the affairs of government.

Of course they are good drivers, having taken the tests. Charles will have had a licence all his life, but as Monarch all British driving licences are issued in their name, so they don't need to have one. All armed forces swear allegiance to the Monarch, not the Government. So do the Police & many similar groups. The US President took the power of Commander in Chief from the King, as well as the signing of Bills into Law. The black outfit thing because the Queen was on Holliday in Kenya when her father died, & she didn't have a black outfit. One had to be brought onto her plane when she arrived in London before she could leave the plane. Black is mostly used for funerals. They cannot let people touch or they would get mobbed. The gloves for health reasons. Seafood restricted because more dangerous than other foods. Also no garlic because bad breath. Autograph banned because of forgery. The Queen used to photo bomb selfies.

King Ralph vibes ... Rock stars sometimes are mauled by fans. People wanting to get a bit of clothing or hair as a souvenir. Thus, the no touching rule - unless invited by the Royal sticking out their hand. Before King Charles met lady Di, he wanted to marry Camella, but she was Catholic. Before he married Camella, he went on record saying that he figured that, as King, he should represent all religions - since he was representing people of all religions. You saw that in his Christmas speech where he spoke to people of all religions and none at all. That said, he is Anglican. Opinions - good, he is an environmentalist, - bad, he believes in the fox hunt

My father drove legally in the uk all his adult life without ever taking a driving test in the uk. There must have been hundreds like him who were exempt on our roads. It had something to do with having driven in the 2nd world war it automatically made them able to drive on the road when they returned.
