SA school rugby in the late 80s was all out war ! We used to be like a hit squad going to a rival school to beat up the other team and then chat up their girls. Bones were broken, punches thrown all kinds of shithousery !

SA always were the thugs of rugby, doing things behind the refs back. It used to be called gamesmanship and the Brad Thornes of the world were hailed as hero's. Now sadly 90% of SA fans would rather blame the ref for any and every mistake they make, with the likes of TASanalytics and Rassie making videos demonizing them. What happened to SA rugby fans

The 'stomping' was perfectly legal when I played High School rugby. It was meant to be using your feet to heel him out of the way as the player on the ground would be blocking access to the ball. It happened to me as a 14 yearold playing another school. And they were wearing metal studs. I remember seeing a match about 12 years later between two Scottish teams - Galashiels v Heriots FP and one of the Gala wing forwards did a bit of stomping but unfortunately it was on a team mate who had to exit the game with blood streaming from a head wound. And that was when the players were amateurs! It was a farmer stomping on a vet. The good old days.

As a schoolboy in the 70's raking someone on the wrong side of the ruck was allowed and common. As a hooker I did a lot of tackling There were red stripes all over my back after many matches. One often looked back to identify to culprit. In Rugby what goes around comes around. Revenge is a dish best served cold. I could dish it out, as well as take it. The rules have changed a lot taking out much of the brutality. I understand the players are bigger, stronger, and serious injuries are more likely to happen if the laws didn't change. Plus mothers wouldn't let their boys be exposed to such risks. Still I miss the older style of tougher Rugby.

Now there is a law where the tackler has to roll away. Back in my dads day that law did not exist but if you did not get out the way the opposition was allowed to stamp on you. Also as you can see by the colour of the cards being given that the game has changed a lot in recent years. In amateur level we obviously do not have tv officials so a lot of these dirty plays are still very common.

NZ All Black Sir Wayne "Buck" Shelford will always a rugby football legend for the 1986 injury he sustained in a match against France, while still an amateur player (no sponsorship or endorsements) 20mins into the match he was involved in a very aggressive maul where he lost 4 teeth and a french players boot tore open his scrotum leaving his testicle exposed. He calmly left the field, asked the team doc to stitch him up and he went back on the field to play. Now that's hard core 🤘🤘

back in the day your job as a forward was to slow it down and you could lie on the other side of the ruck. the other team would mountain climb on you. the ruck marks on your body were a badge of honor. the rule was you had to make a backwards motion with your rucking. if you came straight down it was a stomp and illegal.

@@caylebmladenovic3348 I'm sure you'll forgive me for taking the word of the professionals who agree across the board that grabbing by the collar is a high tackle, you know, considering it's ABOVE THE SHOULDERS. Law 9: Foul play A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously. Dangerous tackling includes, but is not limited to, tackling or attempting to tackle an opponent above the line of the shoulders even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders. I know it requires some actual thought to process because the word "collar" is not actually specified and I understand that the wilted cabbage you call a brain may not be capable of processing that the collar is actually above the shoulders. Regardless, enjoy the rest of whichever rugby season you're currently invested in.

The clip at 2:58 was around the 9'"s where the rules and attitudes were changing with regards to rucking. Before that if you were in the maul and lay over the ball the opposition would basically be fine with running a treadmill on you. The only thing was you couldn't ruck a person's head just the body to get the offending player out of the way. Now the refs would observe and award a penalty if you were covering the ball and you have to make all attempts to roll away and not obstruct it. Video technology also is great because any foul play can be caught and it lessens dirty play. Old school rough play was brutal and entertaining in a gladiator sort of way but the point that has grown(for the better) is that safety and the prevention of injuries takes priority. Not to mention blood born diseases from wounds due to rucking.

Needless to say I had to be carried from the feild on this occasion. Back in day no matter how young coach used to encourage this as it was all part of the game & totally within the rules.
