There was an Onion-esque headline yesterday. It read: " Prince Philip: A life spent not giving a bugger what you think", and I feel that sums him up eloquently. He was a very intelligent man. Sharp as a knife.

That was Princess Anne and Prince Edward. Prince Edward is probably the least recognisable child of the royals but Princess Anne actually competed in the Olympics and is quite a celebrated horse rider.

I really really love the amount of respect I've seen American RU-vidrs show for this. As a Brit I really appreciate and will always consider the US to be a sister country 🇬🇧🇺🇲❤️

Regarding Philip's royal ancestry, his mother was Princess Alice of Battenburg, a grand-daughter of Queen Victoria, who was born at Windsor Castle. His grandfather was the younger son of the King of Denmark who, when Greece was looking for a new king, was offered the crown. Hence the fact that Philip was a prince of the Greek and Danish royal houses. His name "Mountbatten" was an anglicization of his mother's German name Battenburg. The mention of his "mention in despatches" at the Battle of Cape Matapan, arises from the fact that he was the officer in charge of the Searchlights on the leading British ship, HMS Valiant. At Cape Matapan, the British Admiral Cunningham succeeded in luring the Italian fleet into a night-time ambush and it was the searchlights of the lead ship, commanded by Philip, that sprang the trap and suddenly lit up the Italian fleet, which was almost completely destroyed in just 10 minutes!!!!

For my generation, my parents generation and the younger generations in the UK, things are changing everyday. The thing that was always consistent in our lives was The Queen and Prince Phillip and its strange that he's not here anymore.

The man literally turned my life around. I am dual nationality British / American but spent most of my childhood in the UK where my Dad was posted (and where he met my mother). I had a lot of local friends as well as those from other US families at Croughton and was definitely not going on the right direction. My Dad sent me on a DofE Awards scheme which at first I hated him for (before I had turned up for it) but which after I could not get enough of, I went on to get a DofE Gold. It transformed me from being a potential criminal to deciding to join the UK military (although that really did annoy my father :) ) During that time I had the privilege to meet him three times as he was the CiC of my Regiment and on the first two occasions he took the piss (a Brit colloquialism) about my noticeable but watered down Tx accent but was then immediately curious and genuinely interested as to why I was there, the second time he stopped me as he remembered all of it from the first time 7 years before and moved onto other things. The 3rd time was after our return from Iraq and you could tell that the man was a fellow warrior, he wasn't a spectator and he spoke like a veteran, not a visiting dignitary. I then moved back to the US and followed the old man into LE in DC where after seeing kids that were exactly the same as I was at their age I started to look as to if we had an equivalent and guess what I found? We have the DofE Young Americans. I can think of 6 kids right now that I have arranged to attend that did not go down the road that it was obvious that they were going to go down. Not a big number but that is 6 kids and their now families that did not go down that path. Think what you like about Brit royals but this guy was a brother warrior, a decorated WW2 vet and a man that has changed literally millions of lives with the DofE scheme throughout multiple countries and I am grateful to him.

He adored his daughter but said when she was a teenager " if it doesn't fart eat hay have four legs she isn't interested " he was really funny!

Both my children completed their Duke of Edinburgh awards while at school, both sides of the family served in the armed forces , can only speak highly of his service and influence across the Commonwealth, never moaned about his early life, we are all sad to see his passing...best wishes, enjoy your family gathering.....E

With 80 years public service from joining the Navy age 18 in 1939, almost no one in UK can remember a time without him. The ones that do are his contemporary war veterans. This is a huge loss, not just because of the status of his position, but the sheer length of time and stability he has brought the country by supporting the Queen so long and so well.

Rest in peace your royal highness, he was not just a World War 2 veteran and Prince but a loyal husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Even if your not a fan of the royals we should feel for the queen as she has lost not just her husband of 73 years but one of her best friends.

He is very revered over here, he was a War Hero and inspired so many young people across the UK with the Duke Of Edinburgh award expedition training of which I have partaken in to Bronze level Your condolences are very appreciated in this sad time for the country

Met him a couple of times (I was in the Army, the Queen is our colonel-in-chief and visits quite often and Philip was usually with her), had a wicked sense of humour, was sharp as a razor and actually took the time to speak to the troops on an individual basis. Top bloke! GBNF.

The intent of any errors made as we can all see was not negative but a positive of wishing to understand. A man misinterpreted by many but was honest and true to the cause. What's more saddening is how the media that slagged him are now on the bandwagon of how he was a remarkable man . His father sent him to England to school when he was eight then went to live in France with his mistress and Phillip never saw him again , so he was virtually orphaned and without a home !

An honourable man

I'd say that say that Prince Philip was like an uncle that sometimes says or does something controversial, but is generally likeable. Most of us were probably most affected by his charitable work, particularly the DofE scheme. Until a few years ago, he would personally congratulate everyone who completed gold level - his son has now taken over this role.

The poor queen. This is going to be very, very hard on her.

I met him about 15 years ago, when i was an air cadet at the Dowding Memorial parade. He spoke to all of the cadets and addressed us all by our cadet ranks, he made small talk about our DofE badges and how we were doing with our awards.

This came as a complete shock to me when the notification came up. After his treatment earlier in the year I thought he’d have no more health scares for a little while and would last to at least 100. Now this has suddenly dawned upon me the realisation that the last member of that generation in the Royal Family, the Queen, could go soon, which is heartbreaking. (Sniff)

Prince Philip’s death is extremely sad, he has been a tremendous support to the Queen throughout her reign. As your documentary showed, Prince Philip had a very difficult ‘rootless’ childhood and he lost a sister in an aircraft crash when he was 16. Prince Philip was honoured today by 41 gun salutes throughout the UK, Gibraltar and on warships at sea.

Many good comments, and a very respectful video - thank you. One fact you will probably not know is that there is a tribe on the South Pacific island of Vanuatu that worship Prince Philip as a god.

I met him when he visited a an engineering fieldcourse that I ran. He read the magazine of the Royal Academy of Engineering, saw the story and let it be known that he was interested. He loved engineering. The students said he asked genuinely smart questions about their work. Great guy. He was only in his 80s and could walk around a large construction site for two hours, without tiring.

Phil the Greek (a name given to him, affectionally, by a satire programme) was loved because he wasn't a stuffy, boring, 'upper-class twit', he spoke his mind (too much sometimes) and he had a solid grounding in life picked up from childhood deprivation and a career in the Royal Navy. His influence made The Queen closer to her subjects, although she has a history of being her own woman too. I shall always remember him for saying to a group of industrialist at a lunch that they were not doing enough business in the world and 'it is time we got our fingers out' (implied: of our arses). A bit strong for the 60's :-) Love to you and Roger.

One of the few men who I looked up to in life as an example of what I ought to be. A terrible loss.

He was a war hero, and the royal family have done so much good for all the countries in the commonwealth. Most people in the UK who know the history like him and love the royal family. But some people who don't necessarily know our history dislike him and the royal family. It's very sad. If we ever get rid of the royal family I fear the poorer countries of the commonwealth would loose out immensely. Fortunately by far the majority of the UK like having the royal family. Tradition sometimes is a good thing.

Yes - I met him in person at St James's Palace when I was awarded my Gold DoE Award many, many, years ago. Mum and I chatting to the DoE is one thing I will always remember.

Queen Victoria was great great grandmother to both Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Elizabeth through Victoria's son Edward VII of England and Philip through Victoria's daughter Alice. Prince Philip's grandfather was George I of Greece. From Victoria, they were both related to the German Kaiser, Russian Tsar, Danish, Swedish and almost every other royal family in Europe. Mountbatten and Battenberg was his family name.

He was a Greek and danish prince and became a British prince when he married then princess Elizabeth, most royal marriages were between royal houses of Europe e.g the king of Spain is a cousin of the queen of the UK similar with Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Belgium etc

Can’t imagine what the queen is going through right now after 73 years together, I lost my fiancée Kate suddenly back in 2019 after 7 years together :( this summer 2021 was the year we planned to marry she was only 26 when she died :( I can’t imagine what the queen is going through now after 73 years

I saw him and the Queen a couple a times on royal tours here in NZ . He was a controversial figure but I liked him because he spoke his mind , right or wrong. I personally took part in the Duke of Edinburgh award program for young adults here in NZ . Glad I did it. Rest in peace sir.

I never had the pleasure of meeting him, and I still can't really understand why I'm so upset, but, he's always been there, just like the Queen, and now he's gone. When someone is part of the national life for so long, they become a source of stability, a familiar comfort in an ever changing world, and even though I knew he was 99 and logically didn't have long left, I guess part of me couldn't actually believe he'd ever go, and in a way I still can't fully believe that he has. 🇬🇧 😞

You should really watch Lindsay Holiday's video on Prince Philip, it clarifies and mentions a lot of great information such as the fact that he was descended from both Queen Victoria and Christian IX of Denmark, just like Queen Elizabeth II. RIP to our greatest and most supportive royal consort.

The person you don't know is Prince Edward and his wife, oddly Edward was looked upon as a bit of a joke royal but he ended up with the best wife and marriage. Prince Philips children are Charles, Ann, Andrew and Edward.

He had his gaffs, but they were mainly just generational things and not understanding changes in language and what’s offensive etc (rather than actual bigotry) he was an extremely brave man as his war service shows and lived a life devoted to service and his wife. He had to give up his career in the Royal Navy when the Queen was crowned and he had a very sharp tongue and quick wit. It was very admirable that he broke protocol and walked with William and Harry behind their mother’s coffin because he didn’t want them to walk alone. The Queen and Philip really did attempt to do their best by Diana, and often scolded their son for lacking an old fashioned view on marriage that you don’t sulk and moan you make it work and sacrifice personal emotions in favour of keeping it together. The Queen and Philips relationship was a loving one and he most certainly helped her in her very successful reign. He was a very loving and hands on father as well. A great and honourable man and another loss for that dwindling great generation.

Two years younger than my Dad, who also served in the RN in WWII, but outlived him by far. I did a DofE bronze award in 1969, for which I had to demonstrate a "good" knowledge of my hobby, which was fishing at the time. Kept a log and described all the fish I knew to the examiner. Then a 10 mile hike. Silver was different and required a 30 mile hike over two days and camping out. I did this with two school mates in the Cheviot Hills. It was snowing and our socks froze overnight. Learnt not to take socks off again at night when camping! I don't know whether Prince Philip helped devise the challenges, but presumably so, as he was a great outdoors person and probably went through all that at Gordonstoun School. Never met him, but he seemed to have a very sharp wit and never stole the Queen's glory. He was more royal than the Queen in a way, (Queen Mother was not royal) as both sides of his family were from Danish, Russian and German royal families and his mother was a great granddaughter of Queen Victoria, so they were both descendants of her, 3rd cousins if I am right. My local village has put up Union Flags at half mast in several locations, so it is good to see him being remembered by all (except Republicans).

This was unexpected. What a nice gesture. The last two days have been a rather sad history lesson for me. Ashamed to say I knew next to nothing about an apparently great man who has done so much for our country in MY OWN lifetime. His efforts to help struggling young people are remarkable.

A great man who I had the pleasure to meet on two occasions, and yes we shared a joke between us. He said something to me that might have been thought slightly controversial, but it was between us and my wife, and of course went no further. I think that some of his more outrageous comments were caused at times by sheer boredom, having to attend YET ANOTHER round of greetings, and I believe he liked to stir things to see the effect. the man was a class act. A WWII vet he served on a minesweeper right at the pointy end. AS such the man had nothing to prove to anyone. We went on to serve the UK well for decades.

My mother met the Queen and Prince Phillip at a Royal visit to the local hospital where my mother worked. As described in the video, Mum said the Queen was much more formal while Phillip was joking and making people more relaxed. Mum always spoke more highly of Phillip after that! RIP Prince Phillip

This was a nice video to watch. Philip was loved by the people for being quite straight forward and down to Earth as well as having a wicked sense of humour. He was a constant presence as I grew up, and had been since my parents were born; a remarkably long record of service. You could always count on Prince Phillip to be hilarious. To be inconspicuous, he used to drive a black cab around London and sometimes ferried other members of family about. In honour, cab drivers parked up both sides of the mall leading to Buckingham palace.

George VI (the Queens father) died very young he was only 56 when he died, with Elizabeth being 25 and Phillip 29 when she became Queen

Thank you for learning about Prince Philip; I find it touching that you wanted to know more about him. The Mountbatten who was friends with Charlie Chaplin was Philip's uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten. Prince Philip's mother, Alice and Louis were siblings and he adopted his mothers name when he became a UK citizen. The Mountbatten's were a German family who were also descended from Queen Victoria. Philip's Grandfather joined the Royal Navy and became a naturalised citizen. He also had Russian royal blood in him and Prince Philip agreed to a DNA test that helped to identify the remains of the last Tsar and his family. Philip was born on a table! His Grandfather (originally a Danish Prince) and uncle were kings of Greece but the family were kicked out which was why they had to flee. Philip had a very nomadic childhood and didn't really have a permanent home until he married. He loved being in the Navy and was a veteran of WWII. He was on a ship close by when Japan signed their surrendered. He had a pilots licence and was fluent in 3 languages. He was an innovator and moderniser; he pushed for the coronation to be televised for example. He was heavily involved in the re-design of the rooms at Windsor castle that were gutted by the fire. He was an environmentalist and was very interested in science and the advancement of technology and industry. He ran the royal estates. He was a renaissance man!

Also - because of his ancestry, especially the close Danish ancestry, he gave samples to help identify the remains of the Tsar and his family. A prince who left Greece on a Royal Navy vessel, who lost a sister in an awful air crash, and a huge support over _so_ many years to the Queen who fell for him as the young glamorous Naval officer who grew into her greatest friend and ally.
