Rugby is in loose terms probably more like gridiron in the way the game is played where both teams are trying to get a touchdown or a try by carrying the ball over the end line . so by nature of the game the teams are generally all heading down or up the ground in a line more or less . Where AFL is probably more like basketball in that the players hold a general position on the ground and the ball is passed between them .like at the start of a game the forwards are down at the goal they are attacking then the half forwards are roughly half way between the goal and the centre and so on . The game moves very fast hence the large scores , the players can cover on average 15 kilometre's sorry dont know the conversion to miles . There is another explanation vid i think its called AFL for beginners it explains some things better and also shows the womens game .

Hi. I like your comments on all your videos that I've seen. As regards the AFL, or Aussie Rules Football, I regard as a football sport like soccer is whereas American Football and Rugby (Union and League) are more handball sports. Sure, you can kick it but most of the time it is thrown. Soccer is mostly football and Aussie Rules is, to a lesser extent, mostly football. In Aussie rules you can only score a goal by kicking it whilst the major avenues for gridiron is touchdowns and for rugby, tries, both using hands. In fact, America's game has very little FOOTball. The field (oval) varies a little but is usually between 185-190 metres long by 150 metres wide. There is no stop - start to the game except the quarter, half and three quarter-time breaks to change ends causing the mid fielders to be running 15-20 kilometres a game.
@Sticks31
@Sticks31 Год назад
Aussie Rules was established in 1859, so it has been around for 164 years. Association Football (soccer) was established in 1867. Gridiron in the 1860's. So, for those who think this is some sort of "new" sport or variation of rugby (omfg - perish the thought!) think again. Rugby is played in New South Wales and Queensland, and I think there is a team in Melbourne, but who cares?

Nice try, but parts (if not most) of Aussie Rules were derived from the aboriginal game Marn-grook which was played well before Europeans came to Australia, so is many hundreds of years old. Tom Wills, the prime founder of Aussie Rules, grew up playing Marn-grook with local aboriginals here in Victoria. I'm sure ball sports of all sorts preceded any of the modern games, so saying this one or that one came first is just spurious. @@dib000

(NOTE) Aerial Ping-Pong A jocular (and frequently derisive) name for Australian Rules Football (or Aussie Rules as it is popularly called). The term derives from the fact that the play in this game is characterised by frequent exchanges of long and high kicks. The term is used largely by people from States both of Queensland & New South Wales in which Rugby League Football and NOT Aussie Rules (Footy) Football as &/or is the major football code. This interstate and code rivalry is often found in evidence for the term, including the early evidence from the 1940s. 1947 West Australian (Perth) 22 April: In 1941 he enlisted in the A.I.F. and joined a unit which fostered rugby football. The Grand Final is played at 2pm (Melbourne time) on the last Saturday in September. It is usually broadcast around the world on various platforms so if you really want to watch, you should look it up and watch a whole game. Most of it will be a bit puzzling but you will be impressed with the speed and stamina of the players because the game is designed to have minimal stops to keep it moving. Rugby (and American football) always seems to be stopping which Aussie Rules doesn't tend to do anywhere near as much.

This video you just watched is a very basic overview of AFL, there's a lot more you can look into. The difference with the hits in AFL is you don't know where they are going to come from, in Rugby they are mostly going to come from the front, particularly in Rugby League. Scoring is also way different as you saw, the score line was 20 10 130, which is 20 goal, 10 points and the total, 130. ie, 20 goals at 6 points each which is 120 + 10 = 130. You're going to get a lot of conjecture as to which is the better code to play, don't listen to them, it all comes down to preference and where you passion lies. I like AFL and am adamant it is the better code, but you'll get someone arguing why there code is better, you make your own decision. AFL, though, is unique. You may also want to check out cricket, there is a video out there explaining it from a baseball perspective, similar but very different.

My team, Collingwood Magpies or just the Pies have the only American player, Mason Cox at 6’ 11”. He signed up before he ever saw a game and he was terrible but he never gave up until he got it. It took 4 years before he got to play first grade. I called him my American Pie but now he is a Citizen and has been with my club for 10 years. Our football code is the oldest in the world. Older than NRL and you have 50 teams in America called the US AFL. They play in Cities that don’t have big teams. How come I know that and you don’t?

@@Simmo87, no, Mason was just a clutz who was terrible at all sports. He played with the Womens College basketball so they could practice getting around him which wasn’t hard. He was just unco-ordinated and hadn’t learned how to grow into all of that height and he was never afraid of hard work. Our coach worked out how much farther Mason had to drop the ball to hit his foot to kick it than most players and it was hard to do, our kids grow up playing. Even when he lost his sight he still knew he was home. I had my NRL team when I was about 6 in Sydney. My Dad used to talk me through a game until I got it. He was a sports nut and I watched him play football when I was small. He was also a field hockey champion and a road cycle racer. He probably thought he needed a son first but when he got one he found out I was sports nut. I always played three sports at once. I still love the Green Bay Packers.

The game was codified in the 1860's so is the oldest codified ball game and long predates basketball and american football. The umpires run the equal of a marathon each game and the players run between 7 and 12 miles per game depending on their position in the field. These guys can pick up a football off the ground at full speed without slowing down and still watching for tackles. To play this game you need 360 degree situational awareness because the ball can move from one end of the pitch to the other in a matter of seconds and some of these guys can kick a ball from the goal square to almost the centre square without really trying. You need to be able to think fast, move fast and the game doesn't stop during the quarter unless someone has to be carried off the field which isn't often. There are games available on RU-vid and the season is coming to a close with finals starting and the Grand Final on the 30th of September, which is a Saturday and the previous Friday is a public holiday with a parade of the teams (the parade of Champions) held on that day.

Aussie rules can get just a crazy as rugby. You have more running space in Aussie rules so when players collide with eachother it hurts more than a rugby player tackle. Especially when the player get air born and their legs hit you in the head full speed. There has been a few deaths on Aussie rules over the decades. Majority in country VFL where it is real football.

4 posts, 2 big posts are goal posts if you kick a goal it's a goal worth 6 points. 2 smaller posts are behind posts, if you kick the ball between the behind and goal posts it's a behind worth one point. If the ball is touched before it goes through the goal posts it's only one point it can't be touched to get full points. Scoring is goals, points and total, example 2 goals 3 points equals a total of 15 points.

How it started was due to the the summer months it's cricket while there was nothing in the winter months and footy was created for the winter months in Victoria and from the it gone to all parts of Australia. My team Port Adelaide was created in 1870 and it the oldest club outside Victoria in the AFL.

Glad you enjoyed learning about our indigenous game. Similarities to rugby: similar shaped ball (although the Aussie rules ball is a bit smaller and lighter), plenty of tackling, no pads, four quarters. The differences: the shape and size of the ground (large oval vs rectangular pitch), arrangement of players (scattered across the ground in Aussie rules, arrayed in opposing lines in rugby), movement of the ball (kicking and hand passing in Aussie rules vs showing backwards in rugby), scoring (kicking between the goal posts in Aussie rules vs running in a try in rugby). So, pretty different, all in all.
