When she thought that she was unobserved she dropped the cheery face and looked very tired. She also looks extremely thin. The hair updo and hat would disguise any hairpiece added to replace volume. I bet she'll be exhausted for most of this week after today. As she said, she has good days and bad days. Someone suggested elsewhere that, had she had a bad day today, Lady Louise would have been in the carriage with the Wales children to look after them. It also seemed strange to see the Duke of Kent not in uniform now he has handed his colonelcy of the Scots Guards over to his namesake, the Duke of Edinburgh, the other Prince Edward. Apparently, in the family the DoE is Ed and the DoK is Eddie!

A bit of historical trivia you might like: the Grenadier Guards are considered the most senior regiment in the British Army's Order of Precedence, which ranks the units by when they were first formed, despite the fact that they were actually founded six years after the Coldstream Guards. The difference is that the Coldstream Guards were raised as a Parliamentarian regiment in 1650, and the Grenadier Guards as a Royalist regiment in 1656 serving Charles II during his exile; the Grenadiers have thus spent longer in the service of the Crown. But in response, the motto of the Coldstream Guards, Nulli Secundus ("second to none") refers to their proud history as the older regiment. Personally, I like to imagine the commander of the Coldstream Guards examining the Order of Precedence every year with the same weary sigh: "You cut the head off *one* bloody king, and do they let you forget it? Do they bollocks."

High wing military aircraft (c141 and c5 both are) use T tails for multiple reasons. 1 to prevent rocks and debris from damaging the tail when landing off airport 2 to keep tails out of the engine thrust line (which are higher than on a low wing aircraft) during cruise where vibration may cause fatigue 3 a T tail can be smaller (lighter with less drag) as the horizontal stabilizer is located farther behind the fuselage and the vertical stabilizer has an "endplate" which increases its effectiveness. A primary reason is that it facilitates a large cargo hatch and ramp to be built into the rear of the plane, for loading and unloading. No elevator spar running through the middle of the rear of the aircraft to get in the way.

Of course there is a lot more to the ceremony. What we saw I think was the Escort for the Colour receiving the Colour. This is then 'Trooped' through the ranks; the old military idea was that the Regimental Colour was the rallying point in the chaos of battle, and all the soldiers needed to be shown what it was. I believe the Colour is the pride of the Regiment, the scrolls on it are the Regiment's Battle Honours. I've seen some of the BBC coverage; as is correct in this country, they never refer to a 'white' horse. You always call them 'grey' horses.

The vertical stabilizer, the "tail fin", is there to prevent the aircraft drifting to the side, "side slip" and the nose from swinging side to side. The one on the C17 looks bigger because of the size of the aircraft and its weight. It's more complicated than that but that's the gist of it.

At 14.38 you see the chosen ensign receive the Colour , (from the three spaced out Guards who are the Colour Party in front of him) his escort is the line of troopers who marched behind him. (When they were marching forward they were the Escort for the Colour, once the Ensign receives the Colour (Flag on which are embroidered their battle honours) they become Escort TO the Colour. They then with Ensign in front turn to their left and begin to Troop the Colour through the ranks while the band moves forward. That bit is the Trooping the Colour! Hope that helps 😊sorry, edit! I didn’t read all of the comments and I see that others have explained this too - probably much better than I have 😊😊

Hi. I just recommended a video to some else from the US who had only watched this with no commentary and so didn’t understand what was going on and why. I suggest viewing The Royal Family Channel (a news organisation channel not the official channel of the Royal Family) who recently put out a video explaining (not perfectly) the Trooping The Colour ceremonial using last year’s ceremonial when it was the Welsh Guards’ turn, as opposed to this year when it was the Irish Guards’ turn. It should help you follow the ceremonial next time even with no commentary. What it doesn’t tell you is the names of all the music for the slow and quick marches of each of the foot guards regiments and the walk and trot music for the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and for both regiments of the Household Cavalry. Other than that it’s a fairly easy introduction.

The noise was a group of anti-royal protesters shouting "Not my King", while others in the crowd shouted back at them. The 'gold guys' are band leaders, so you have to become a soldier & bandsman. That waving of the sword is a salute, respecting the Colour, flag, & the King. The Colour, flag, represents the regiment, it is carried through the ranks, trooped, for them to see & recognise it, which was vital in the old days when the Colour was the gathering point for a regiment in battle. The Colour is embroidered in gold with the names of battles & actions the Regiment has taken part in over the centuries. These are the list of Battle Honours, reminding all of the service of the regiment, & the lives lost in action. The Colours are replaced with new ones when needed, so the King recently gave the army new flags, as a new reign has begun. The old flags usually go into regimental museums, but sometime are hung up in Churches or similar honoured places. The Colours are almost sacred, as the Roman army's Eagle Standards were long ago.

I remember remarking once, when Connor was watching a black and white newsreel of (I think) the 1953 Coronation part of which he could not hear properly and said ‘Are they shouting “All hail the Queen?”, that I have only ever heard ‘All hail’ from Americans when they are jovially greeting one of their own who has achieved some eminence. Definitely not to be heard in the UK!

They have been in the ‘background’ as working royals for some years but are now front and centre. I notice, Connor, that you always salute on these types of occasions... I'm not (& have never been) in the Military so may (easily) be mistaken...but, I dont think its considered to be the "correct" form to either salute an Officer, if youre not wearing your 'headdress'** (British** military parlance) / "cover"* (American*... Marines?) .., (_or_ if _not_ actually _in_ the military ?) Please _do_ correct me if I'm in error - and please accept my apologies if I am mistaken?
@roddo1955
@roddo1955 2 месяца назад
You were mistaken. You can salute as a citizen. As a matter of fact; If you meet an officer in uniform and you salute them, they are obliged to return your salute. If you wear a cap or hat, you can take it off as an extra sign of respect. No matter if you are in the armed forces or not. You can try it out at the changing of the guard. Just walk past and salute them! What you can't do is wear official uniform when you are not in the armed forces. Or pretend to be armed forces. But....there is no law that prohibits you from wearing unofficial military attire. Like a costume. But you are not allowed to 'pose' as a soldier. So if you don't make it very clear that you are pretending, you probably will be told to leave. I have seen videos of pranksters in fake costume being told to leave.😂 No need to feel bad for assuming things: it means you are very curious by nature and probably heard or read about it and wanting to share what you learned and open to learning more. That's a good thing. More people should be curious and eager to learn. 😊

@@roddo1955 I have only just returned to viewing comments (etc) on YT (I had taken a nap!) ...so please accept my apologies for both my tardy response, and, especially for my error regarding the salute, cap - or no cap, uniform etc ...though, I don't recall _exactly_ what I'd said, I believe I had thought 'non-military personnel' ought _not_ salute any Officer _within_ the Services... I've no idea where that idea came from, and had not realised my mistake 'til seeing your response. Thank-you for taking the time and effort so to do. Horses aren't usually bothered by rain, though there may be thunder nearby, (I heard some earlier today, though not close by) but usually windy weather has horses 'jiggling' to turn their backs into the wind - so it blows their tails, not their faces / eyes...but of course, are standing or moving in formation too, as trained so to do... Though it would've been nicer for _everyone_ if the rain had held off, (the main reason for the TTC being held in June rather than the Monarch's real birthday - April for our dear late Queen, R.I.P. and King Charles' as his birthday isn't til 14th November - was to try to ensure better weather for the occasion... Oh well, that's the British weather for you!! Happy Official Birthday KCIII... May your true birthday see dry weather come your way. 👌🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🙂🇬🇧😏🖖

A horses natural instinct is to turn away from the rain as they can’t protect their eyes, so when they are made to face into it they can get a little antsy. If you ever drive past a paddock of horses (or cattle) while it’s raining and a bit windy, you’ll notice they are all facing the same direction.
