Toilets in Europe are mostly free if you are a customer in the restaurant/pub/bar whatever the place is. In fast food chains the the toilets often have a code lock, so you'd have to buy something and get the code on the receipt. If you do come over from the outside you may have to pay. And in places such as train stations, shopping malls, parks, museums or any type of public place they would most of the time be paid. Usually an insignificant amount like 50 euro cents to 1 euro.
@mrkv4k
@mrkv4k Год назад
Yes. The reason for this was that many organized travel agencies used these toilets for a stop on their route. So you could have a bus full of people stopping on one gas station and 50 people going to the toilet without buying anything. Most pubs and malls have charge free toilet, but it's good to buy at least something (I usually buy one beer before using the toilet). Czech public toilets have usually a symbolic charge of 10Kc (around 40 cents) and this money is used to pay the cleaner.

Hmm, this is definitely more of a USA vs Czech Republic guide to economic culture differences since many things are somewhat different from Sweden and other European countries. I guess what I'm trying to say is that Europe is a continent with many countries, each with it's own culture. We share many cultural traits but there are plenty of things that are different from country to country, some more than others.

Yes. norwegian here. We get free and fresh tapwater in restaurants all over Scandi. We can use cafe and restaurant toilets for free, but sometimes have to ask. There are pay-toilets in central areas to avoid romanian beggars and drug addicts messing them up. We also have more beer selections in our bars, but in the Czech republic the beer is so good that it’s all right with just two beers on tap. Other countries inneurope have different rules and customs. We are used to figuring out and expecting differences while travelling on our own continent. It kind of makes it interresting and fun aswell. Sometimes it can be quite anoying.

As a dutch chef and bartender there are 2 things that make me happy I live in the Netherlands and not in the US. 1) We tip to show appreciation, not to supplement wages. 2) prices include taxes. As touched on in the video these things create a sort of false advertisement, especially together. Ps. Europeans drink coffee, Americans turned it into coffee flavored tea and deserts.

Often czech mentality about tipping is based on opinion: the value of the service is included in the total price, and the tip is just something extra if you want to be extra nice. our waiters pay is not as dependent on tips as in america (or at least that is the general perception).
@am1156
@am1156 Год назад
I know why they don't include tax. They say with this, if it wasn't for the government and taxes this beer would be cheaper. Blame the government and taxes for your expensive beer, not the seller and hardworking capitalist. And this works fine because in the US they hate both the government and taxes. In Europe we understand that we have to pay tax if we want to have a good society.
@manub.3847
@manub.3847 Год назад
Well, when you look at your bill in Europe, you usually also see, mostly at the bottom, the net price + taxes and "drum roll" you also see the breakdown (*in my country some things are taxed less than others, for example Example daily newspapers, basic foodstuffs with 7%; alcohol, clothing and other things with 19%)
@am1156
@am1156 Год назад
@@manub.3847 Well, drum roll, obviously. In my country it's mostly 25% or 12% for food. But the price that you are told, see, at the point of purchase is the the final price. No jittering about, breaking the price down or looking at the fine print. Why? Because we don't have a problem with tax. Not in my country anyway.

on tipping, I think the main difference is that in Europe we pay servers a decent wage. They don't live off tips as they do in the US. Generally, if your business can't survive paying your workers a liveable wage, is it really a viable business? Here in Sweden we generally add 5-10% in a restaurant. If the service is exceptional we'll tip more, but the service charge is already added to the bill so the tip - gratuitiy - is voluntary.

Austrian here, it's quite similar to Czechia but pretty different for some points he mentioned. For example tap water will be served without batting an eye and for half a liter it's sometimes just 20c (though for some tourist traps it can be 2-3€). Also restrooms are free in every sit-in restaurant as well as fast food places, you can even walk in there and head straight to the toilet. Tipping is the same, you round up, though nowadays it's pretty common that if a beer costs 3,90€ you give a fiver and say it's okay or just "round up" to 4,50€. But if you wait more than 10mins at a restaurant even if it's 39,90€ you just round up to 40 bc the service was just bad. Also when the bill is way over 60 or 70€ you just give 8-10€ as a complimentary tip (just bc prices aren't that high here and they had to run so many times back and forth to get everything that it's just appropriate). And yes, everywhere in Austria we have the McCafé's with 4-8 faucet espresso machines just because our coffee culture is that sacred for us that even McD has to serve really good coffees for customers to buy it :D

I am Czech from Prague and he is not correct with the tap water, in most of restaurants in Prague you can ask for tap water and yes, same as in Austria in some restaurants they will charge you for tap water 5-10 crowns for 0,5 liter. And yes, toilets are free in restaurants, but for example in McDonald´s in Czech Rep. you have to pay 10 crowns (but you can use the check from toilets by next order and they will give you 10 crowns discount)

In Europe you can tip, it’s just that waiters have normal salary so they don’t rely on someone’s tip (essentially a complement from the customer). They are getting payed on a job, not for sucking up to strangers for some charity, because their workplace don’t pay them their salary. Good service is great but people should not be denied their dignity, they are working but they are no one’s servants.

The toilets here are free mostly in restaurant if you buy there anything. The costs of cleaning are included in the servise in common. There are some free toilets in some shopping centres (not in all, depends on the politics of the center), some food chains (Kauflan etc.), in museums (if you are visitor) and so on. But separately standing are mostly paid because someone has to clean them. But it is not so expensive and somewhere you can even pay with card. So than you can argue when the toilets are not clean. And you would probably like the Starbucks Coffee at the Prague Castle.

I feel like the tipping thing is more like "No it's okay, we get paid the same wage here as everyone else, you don't need to play my salary for my employer." Like yea, you can tip, but normally, at least here in CZ, it's if you just like your service and you want to leave them something extra. I usually just round it up, if I'm paying, idk, 234 I'd give them like 300 in bills and say "250" or something and they'll give me a 50 back and just be glad you left a tip, but it's not at all expected of you. Normally they'll just give you your change back and that's it.

The situation with paid restrooms is different in every EU country. Restrooms in pubs/restaurants are always free (even in fast-food). Restrooms in malls are almost everywhere and also free. The same goes for pumps. The paid restrooms are only the public restrooms, like in the train station (and that's not always), where the restrooms are maintained by someone who needs to pay rent for that space and pay workers to clean there. Generally paid restrooms are cleaner and much more modern (Few people even prefer to pay than go to the free restrooms). And even than the price is commonly 50 cent.

You know, if they bring you beer that you did not want, they take it away, usually no problem, they give it to another customer, normally even without loosing its foam... A bit of problem might be if you drinking some special sort that is not common (there are usually 2-4 taps at average bar with some 2 different marks plus "variants" (strong, black, alcohol-free etc) then he/she would make face "couldn't you make evident you don't like another one?" but even then, if you insist they take it away and throw away... They are set for the "most common behaviour" and that is to either drink next or ask for recipe... or tell that you taking "pause" or switching to another kind of drink. Almost anything can be agreed if you communicate...

Czech pubs usually have a deal with one brewery. And they sell beers from that brewery only. So you'll choose a pub based on the beer brand you like, not the other way around. The major benefit of this is that they have a good "flow", which is really important for maintaining the quality of beer (or rather lager, since that's the most popular beer in the Czech Republic). You will get few options, but they are all from one brand, for example our local pub has 11° Radegast, 12° Radegast, Stout and non-alcoholic beer.

The cubicle walls were literally should height whilst squatting - so you could chat to your neighbour and the big sewerage/waste trough was linked to the woman's toilet - so you were literally landing your turds on top of female hygiene products. We don't have free restrooms? WHAT?! There are quite a few things here that is from the perspective of a czech vs american cultural differences. Employees not being nice and suggesting stuff, that's not how it is in Southern Europe, you're usually greeted with a smile. The problem of videos like this relies more on the author than americans who react to them though.

I heard that pricing without tax is purerly because it just looks better. 15 dolars looks better than 16, right? And thats why... I think. :D

Tipping isn't rude, but I'll you what IS rude, paying your staff practically slave wages and then expecting the employee to be fake nice just to make enough tips to live on

Merely disliking rampant, unfettered capitalism which abuses the rights of consumers and oftentimes ignores them entirely, is not anti capitalist. What I often find, especially with Americans is their lack of understanding capitalism must be kept in some sort of check, with regulations designed to protect the rights of consumers and workers to be an effective system, and to prevent the rights of consumers and workers from getting violated by companies, who could not give one about the rights of individuals as they are not required to in such a system. What must always be remembered with big corporations is what they are able to get away with, they WILL get away with, if doing so serves their purposes. They should NOT posses the same rights as an individual, as they do in the US, they are not an individual, they are an extremely powerful and organised body, not a person. Thus specially designed rules and regulations must be applied to them in order to prevent the humans rights of the individual from infringement by such organisations. And whenever I am in the US, I tend to order a medium to small coffee, Ive no need for a bucket of brown water thanks. Really I avoid franchise coffee everywhere I go as pretty much all coffee chains are not so good, both in the UK and the US. Either I grind my own coffee beans and make some myself or I find some small diner in the US, or Cafe in the UK. Diner coffee is the best coffee Ive found in the US so far. Nice, hot and simple. None of this pumpkin spiced latte for $12 bullshit.

I am czech and even I don;t agree with everything Jan said.. I never had an issue asking for a tap water.. Service is not THAT grumpy but it is not as happy and jolly as in U.S. btw the taxes thing in USA: let's use McD as an example... they will have a campaign for a new burger priced at 5 dollars, but every state have different taxes - therefore the prices in stores are without it so it will all be easily recognized from a marketing point to the final consumer..

I think huge part of what he says is based on Prague and being a foreigner there. I think he even explained in one of the previous videos that sometimes there are even different menus with different prices for foreigners and for Czechs (but it was probably few years ago). (Můj problém s ním je, že nemůžu vystát tu jeho děsnou dikci v českých videích :D )

In my experience in sweden, you never have to pay to use the restroom at a restaurant or bar. It's only public restrooms like at a train station or at a library
