My 62 year old mother tells me every single time there is a school shooting that she and several other teachers, assistants, and staff have discussed how they will not hesitate to use their own bodies as shields to protect the children. The school is close enough to my house that I will be able to hear the shots being fired in the event of a school shooting. Earlier this year she told a student to stop hitting the little girl sitting next to him and he looked my mother in the eye and told her he was going to bring his daddy's gun to school so he can kill her. This is the country we live in. Yes guns are fun to shoot, but I'm not trying to see my mother or my nephews lying in caskets along with all the other victims of the next school shooting.

@@Robertsmith001 because some people don't want to carry a firearm into a school. They've never used one and don't want to. What a society we've created. @@Robertsmith001 right, I’m convinced some people just don’t understand that you may be called to defend yourself or others. I guess all folks aren’t built for that. If you’re not built for that I think you should stay out of this debate. Your mother would better serve those kids by training with a firearm and returning fire on the monster instead of throwing herself in front of the kids, that’s not going to stop any thing. It’s honorable and all but not effective in stopping a active shooter. No offense meant towards you or your mother, I just think we need to look at these things in reality & approach it properly.

A shotgun or handgun is quite sufficient for home defense. Although modern handguns require intensive training. An assault rifle like the AR-15 is acquired because a permanent threat is already assumed in the mind. This is called paranoia. Nevertheless, I would advise any minority to arm themselves adequately according to their needs in these times. In the last 5 years, unfortunately, I had to fundamentally change my opinion about weapons. I still do not like them and hate them so much. When people claim "you don't need an AR-15 to defend yourself," they suggest great ignorance of firearms. They are the kinds of people who think it is easy to simply shoot a person in the leg, which is commonly seen in Hollywood films. In the heat of the moment, hitting a target becomes exceptionally difficult. An AR-15 makes it easier. They are also a lot of fun. I've got a friend in London, Ontario who's a gun enthusiast. He has an armory. He has a section of his home that's basically a vault full of guns. Everything from old flintlock pistols to the MCX-Spear. He loved guns. But he's also a RESPONSIBLE gun owner. Every gun is safety secured, with all ammo locked up in a different room. He does keep a handgun next to his bed for security (in a finger print locked safe). He's got hundreds of guns. And he's fully in support of Canada's gun laws. He's said that if the government said he needed to turn in some of them, he'd have no issue doing so. Because collecting guns is something he enjoys. Shooting guns is something he enjoys (safely at the range). But guns are a tool to kill people. Period. That's what they exist for. Yes, some people can use some for hunting, but those aren't the ones mass shooters buy. Guns won't stop a tyrannical government, because they have the military and will kill you before you even know they're coming. A handgun CAN be used in defense of your home, if you're well trained in it's use (a large number of home deaths involve someone shooting themselves or a loved one with a gun they bought for defense). But the idea that everyone should be armed to the teeth is idiotic. You want guns, you should be able to prove you can be trusted with them. You should go through thorough background and mental checks, get trained and licensed, and have the gun registered. If you follow the laws, you get your gun. The second you BREAK the laws, you should lose them. The argument is always "well gun laws just hurt law abiding gun owners." No, they don't. If you're law abiding, the laws don't affect you. If you're a CRIMINAL that wouldn't pass a background check... THEN they affect you.

Hears my take on AR - 15 owners . I’ll use a neighbor a couple of houses down from me , he’s a 47 year old boy , he’s 5’01” , he shaves his head , he is covered with tattoos , he wears sleeveless shirts, oh and he drives a 4 wheel drive pickup , big tires, raised soo high I don’t know how he gets in it . That pickup has never been on a dirt road much less a river . The other one is pretty much the same except this one has an 90’s something Corvette parked in his driveway that hasn’t moved in over 2 years , ( yes 2 years ) . He washes and waxes it monthly, but never drives it . Another person told me that the engine was blown 3 months after he bought it. The Corvette owner has 2 AR- 15’s . I think they both have mental issues AND I watch them closely.

Trump made it ok for the racists to be and act upon their racist thoughts. Therefore I trained every member of my family in safety, maintenance, tactics, accuracy, situational awareness, and more importantly self awareness. Because no one is a criminal until they commit a crime. And the difference between a good guy with a gun and a bad guy with a gun is one too many bad days. We all have the propensity for evil. Why exactly does anyone 'need' an AR-15 and why should they be allowed to own one if they can't own a missile? They also sit in the safe, I don't believe anyone will be breaking into my house. I have jumped through all the hoops to get my firearms ID card. I've gone through all the necessary background checks for each of my weapons, and I think that if the laws were strict everywhere as they are where I live, maybe some of the people who have gotten their hands on guns and have done horrible things wouldn't have been able to get their hands on guns. I have no problem with strict gun laws. It's a necessity.

@Think Harder "Most other places have stricter laws than the US and are also more violent." Actually, the US ranked 77th out of 200 countries in terms of homicide last year, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, so already you're starting off on the wrong foot. In 1994, there was a federal ban on assault rifles that expired in 2004. During the ban, the number of assault-rifle-related incidents went down. After the ban, they rose. Why don't Mexico's federal laws work? According to the Harvard Gazette, "Between 70 to 90 percent of guns recovered at crime scenes in Mexico can be traced back to the U.S. Drug cartels, in particular, buy those weapons in the U.S., mostly in Texas or Arizona, and smuggle them across the border." They don't work because they're too easily circumvented. You say "it needs to be federal" is an excuse for failure at the state level. I say it's a solution. However, we'll never know as long as efforts to pass and enforce such laws are blocked.

Name the semi auto military rifle and I have provably used it at one time or another. I am an experienced gun fighter. Several times I have gone up against a military rifle with just a handgun... its a hard row to hoe. I survived by sheer luck, usually by just escaping. I think that high capacity semi auto rifles should have never been allowed in the hands of the civilian public. However, I don't see a way of stuffing that genie back into the bottle. I think a possible first step is to make the open carry of rifles illegal. Every time I see some 2A nut carrying a rifle openly I want to pull on them.... but I don't.
