thank you, you saved me time. I saw the title and thought I'd get back to it later, without looking up detail beyond the title was hoping it was a fantasy that was black people centric. Would be cool if there were more movies/shows like that
I couldn’t disagree more. It handled certain nuances a modern generation has to navigate exceptionally well. I felt the title was a little click-baity, and maybe even a little brash, but the final act of the film really started to pull it all together. -It was beautifully done and honestly, exceeded my expectations.
When I saw the title I thought Spike Lee made it so it was gonna be a really cool concept. Then I saw the trailer and it felt like no. Honestly would prefer if Jordan Peele made it. The skit where they parodied Harry Potter was legendary 😂
The best example is dolomite. Test screenings of dolomite took place in a theater in Pasadena. It did not do well and they were just going to scrap it and Cut their losses. All the blacks involved said are you kidding and suggested they show it in a black theater in a black neighborhood. They did a screening at the woods theater in Chicago. It became the record breaking one theater screening of all time
When I saw the previews I knew I was not going to see the movie. To be honest there seem to be a run of black films that I don't have interest in seeing, because the theme seem to be a narrow view of black people. I had stop watching pimp, drug lords, stripper, and slave movies. I would like to see more character development when it comes to films featuring back people. One size fit all does not work for me.
This may be a example of the suits stepping in to make sure the audience that this movie is not really for is not offended. There are hoards of movies that could have been better until the executive stepped in realistic expectations and irrelevant pseudoscience surveys.
Well the same logic that producers used back in the day when adapting gritty novels where the protagonist or at least most of the main characters are ethnic. And white washing the cast. Best example of that is the movie the Warriors. From a marketing stand point or what I call the white gaze Producers don’t believe that white people will go see a movie with a black protagonist. So the choke by forcing them to whiten it up. Basically destroying the hole point of the thing. There are tons of movies that have been plagued by their executive producers Who’s second guess the vision of a movie.
