A British RU-vidr and his wife came to New Zealand and the wife ordered fish and chips for lunch. She leaned over to her British husband and said " I think New Zealand makes fish and chips better than England where they were invented." Her husband looked down sad and said "Yeah I Know".

The main difference is that they cook the fish and chips when you order it in NZ, while in the UK it's generally pre-cooked, sitting in a vat. The NZ fish is nicer as well for some reason.
@edwardfletcher7790
@edwardfletcher7790 12 дней назад
It's the same story in Australia. NZ and Australian seafood tends to be much, much, better than the UK. I suspect it's a combination of very fresh local fish, Australian sunflower oil at exactly the right temperature, a well made beer batter and chefs who really care about the overall quality 👍

A little Info to set you Straight. "Paua" is the same as what a lot of other Countries Call Abalone. However, the Kiwi "Paua" is pure & in it's Natural State. Most Abalone is Dyed White as the People who decide such things deem the Black meat to be unappetising. One thing you will find in NZ is that most Seafood (Kai Moana) is caught fresh around the Coast & it's best when not played around with. You can expect to pay a Premium Price for Premium Types as you are competing with the Price the Producer can get for Export Product. There are some lesser Products that either don't appeal to the Export Market or there is not the same Demand. But Any Fresh Fish is good & a common Fish in Fish & Chip Shops like Hoki or Lemon Fish is still tasty, without the Delicateness of Flavour in Snapper, Orange Roughy, Terakihi & Blue Cod. Gurnard & John Dory are Middle Range Fish for Flavour but are a Ridiculous Price. When I was growing up We ate Snapper etc & the Cats got Gurnard. Nowadays, Gurnard costs as much as Terakihi, only slightly less than Snapper (at the Time of Writing $4 a Kilo less). Fish & Chips was a Traditional Friday Night Dinner for the Family & it was a Cheap meal for Mum, Dad & 2-4 Children. During the 70's & 80's, the Arrival of KFC which was really Good back then, McDonalds & International Type Eateries, Asian, Curries, Kebabs, Italian etc Takeaways, enticed people away from Fish & Chips, resulting in less Proper Fish & Chip Shops & the necessity in Slashing the Quality of the Rood, that dreaded Circle of Competitive Price Versus Quality & Quantity which loses even more Customers. If you are heading down to the South Island, the Further South you go from Dunedin, you will encounter NZ's best kept Secret when it comes to Fish & Chips, Blue Cod. You don't often find it in The North Island & when you do it's probably been Frozen, but as it Frozen straight from the Sea it's still far better than most other Product. It is very similar to Fresh Snapper & Flakes into Beautiful tasting White fish fillets, Succulent, with the creamy taste of the Sea. If you're down there in the Bluff Oyster Season, 1/2 doz Battered Bluff Oysters lightly cooked & 2 pieces of Battered Blue Cod is a Seafood Lovers Dream. Paua is an awkward marine gastropod molluscs. It's not a True Sea Snail but neither is it a True Mollusc as it only has 1 shell, unlike true Mollusc such as Mussels, Clams, Scallops & Oysters with which NZ abounds. Normal Sea Slugs & Snails usually protrude from their Shells, retreating back into their Shells when there is obvious Danger, much like their land based Cousins. It's just referred to as Paua or in any Fine Dining Establishments "NZ Abalone". If you make it to Auckland, The Fish Pot Café in Mission Bay was one of the Best Places for Fish & Chips, if it's still there. Apart from there, most Wet Fish Shops (Fishmongers) do Fish & Chips with the added bonus that you can Select your Fillet & they will cook it for you for a small fee, rather than paying for an unknown piece of Fish. Happy Travels & Bon Appetite!

@@nikkster01 You have Obviously Never tried Paua that's been Cooked Properly. What you are eating is the actual Muscle of the Paua, with all the Gut & other Bits & Pieces removed. It is what Anchors the Animal to the Rock, of course it's going to be Tough. There's 2 ways of dealing with a Paua, You either Beat the Hell out of it to tenderise it (My Mother used the old Heavy Rolling Pin) or you can Mince it. I actually soak them in a little water & Baking Soda for 10 mins, rinse well & Mince it. The added advantage of Mincing means a little goes a long way. I make Fritters with a 3rd of it & Cream the Rest. Fantastic! Tender & the Unique taste you can get nowhere else.

Well I'm a New Zealander and I have eaten quite a lot of Fish and Chips meals over the 80 years here in NZ, but I must concede, that when I worked in Grand Prairie in Texas USA back in the late 1990s - 2000, I use to go a Captain "D" Fish and Chip shop and get some Fish and Chips for my lunch meal once a week. They too put the Fish and Chips into a box and I use to walk back to work to eat it, they were great Fish and Chips and I enjoyed them very much indeed.

I'd definitely be keen to hear your thoughts on New Zealand ice cream. I know it's winter but Kiwis do ice cream year round are the world's largest consumers of ice cream (8 gallons per person). In Wellington, Duck Island on Cuba Street is hand's down the most popular spot for ice cream, followed by Kaffee Eis which does gelato. For maximum flavour options, I'd recommend getting a Flight (8 flavours) from Duck Island or a half litre (4 flavours) from Kaffee Eis. 🙏

Dad & I were keen fishermen in the 60’s .. we used to get an assortment of reef fish, snapper, sweet lip, red rock cod, squire, in winter we went fishing for whiting, beautiful sweet fish, we would catch between 50 & 100 (big job scaling, gutting & filleting) but the were delicious fried in egg & bread crumbs. The best fish I ever had was Perl Perch ❤. I’m 72 now & finding it harder & harder to get nice F&C now in Australia.😔

Ahh, old school fish and chips. Tear a hole in one end of the wrapped fish and chips and enjoy! Have to admit though I do like the new evolution of putting them in a shallow box, then encased in a paper bag with a couple of slits cut in the top. Then when you get home, everything is still super crispy coz the steam could escape. And yeah agreed, the Paua was expensive but looked thicc!! And was also all paua, no filler.

That’s a good fritter, they have obviously got a fresh source for all their seafood, I’m from Wellington but live in Auckland now, that pāua is def $13 on todays market sadly inflation has robbed the youth of their fish and chips we used to get 5 potatoe fritters for 10c back in the day after swimming we’d walk home from swimming in the freezing cold and spend our train fare on potatoe fritters as they were more filling than chips. You are doing such a great job sourcing good places and I love you googled picnic table, am going to start doing that too. ❤

Initially I was surprised about the prices. But then I saw what you got for your money. The serving of snapper (fish) was really big. The Paua (abalone) patty was full of the meat, and large to generous. Both are expensive in NZ. So I think you got a great deal. I wish I was in Karori, Wellington to check a similar meal out!!!! Some fish and chip outfits put very little Paua into their patty's..... your Paua patty looked like a luxury patty. Also, they do have Paua (abalone) in the southern areas of Australia. I don't know if they feature them in fish and chip shops tho......

Paua is Abalone. It's actually endangered in California (or it was) and really fancy chefs are only allowed to harvest a couple a year. You can get it canned but it's bleached, processed, and often from places where the water quality isn't as good. You got to try the real thing. Also, the mayo you get in NZ is sweeter than US mayo, so if the sweeter mayo was used in making the tarter sauce that would be the reason for the different flavour.

My favourite way to eat Paua is cooked with garlic, mushrooms, lemon and cream. Have a fresh baguette to soak up the left over sauce.

Hey Tom, try the Duck Island icecream shop in Cuba Street in Wellington. My recommendation would be Boysenberry Cheesecake. Soooo good!! They give you free tastings. Also in Hamilton and two stores in Auckland.

I'm personally not a fan of paua, but lots of friends love it, glad to see your paua fritter was a good one. Battered mussels, now that I can get behind 100%. Hopefully you're around for whitebait season, then you can have a completely different fish and chip shop experience.

When ordering chips you can order them the way you like them. If you like them super crispy just ask for 'extra crispy' or 'extra fry time'. Some people like them soft (strange) so ask for them soft.

Imo there are two types of fish and chip shops in NZ. There are the fancy ones in a great location who cater to the trendy / more affluent and there are the ones in the suburbs who feed the masses on the regular. This second type can be hit and miss but we all know the good one in our locality. If you are in Auckland, roughly in the Airport vicinity, try Kiwi Takeaways on Puhinui Road in Papatoetoe. They are consistently good for fried foods, but their burgers are just OK. You will get Hoki and chips for well under $10. Snapper is available at a premium but reasonable cost and is excellent. Do not be afraid to try some foods from other cultures in the less affluent suburbs of Wellington - Porirua for example. Ask around and find some Island food outlets

If you are ever in Waikato go to Raglan to the Raglan Fish shop on the wharf - 92 Wallis Street, Raglan. Best ever fish and chips, fish fresh off the boat. Try their smoke fish pie, so yummy. Great vids btw. Lived in America for 1 year, they only had sweet pies, no mince etc pies. Friend in America couldn't believe NZers had savory pies lol.

As a local to the area, can I give u the bakery and the combo to order from? It’s in Porirua which is the hood of the whole Wellington area, go to the Waitangirua Bakery and order a Filled Roll (Chicken is my preference), Pizza Stick (Warm), Pork and Egg pastry, Steak and Cheese pie. And also get a custard pie and a tray of coconut buns (Panipopo) for the sweet side. All I’m going to say is it’s a 20/10 feed that u will be thanking me later for. Go during the morning preferably
