MY biggest pet peeve on videos where people find the random Americans to speak for us is when they don't make it known that this country is huge AF and we have different words for things based on cultural and regional differences. A lot of the British English words are widely used in the States too. For example, her calling a clearly glass cup just a normal cup and then made it seem like all Americans say that was weird. We say glass and use cup for non-glass cups just like anyone else. We also say fridge, roundabout (I never hear traffic circle), people outside of the northeast don't usually say "sneakers"... we call them tennis shoes, shoes, gym shoes, or we call it the brand name like "got a new pairs of Nikes, Jordans, etc." We also call it trash. I called shopping carts "buggies" because I'm from the south. The question about soap was annoying and arbitrary AF in my opinion. Soap is usually called whatever it's function is... dish soap, body wash, face wash, etc. The theater/cinema picture was kinda misleading because that looks nothing like a movie theater I've seen here. It looks like the opera.
@rachelcookie321
@rachelcookie321 Год назад
It’s the same for Britain too. Britain may be a small country but there are tons of different dialects in Britain. There are actually more British dialects than American. There are about 30 American dialects and about 40 British ones. I’m British and a lot of things he said in the video, I don’t say and a lot of the American words said in this video also get used in the UK. Like I have never heard anyone say “dustman” before. That’s a bin man because he takes out the rubbish bins. And I don’t say film, that sounds too posh, I say movie. Watch a movie at the cinema.
@ahirusaru
@ahirusaru 9 месяцев назад
@@rachelcookie321same for England, I’m northern and we are very very different to the south, a lot of the things in these videos we would have a completely different word for up north. Sometimes up north we use the American versions of words too. I’d never actually heard of the word ‘dustman’ until this video and we say license plate here too. Maybe it would be best if people in the videos stated what area they’re from too so outsiders know it’s only a representation of that area and not the whole countries.

I'm American. 0:50 A cup is a broad term. This specific cup is made of glass, being called a 'glass.' Give me a plastic one and it's 'cup' all the way. 1:15 Its a fridge. I say 'refrigerator' like 10% of the time. 1:24 Roundabout. For sure. 1:32 That looks like something you would use in an elementary class. I called them 'cubbies'. 1:54 Dish Soap / Soap. Also, soap for your body in the shower is 'body wash'. 2:19 It's just phone. 2:34 I call it soccer because it's a habit and it would confuse the people I talk to but i think football makes more sense. 2:51 Wardrobe. Closets are like tiny rooms built into the house that you can put anything in. Wardrobes are pieces of furniture you put clothes in. 4:44 it's both?

Ella Walker americans adapted english and invented their own words when they were colonised, plus "soccer" is football, your handegg sport should be renamed
@rokyt8949
@rokyt8949 6 лет назад
Nichuto But the term "soccer" originated from Britain. Both sports are generalized as football. Association football is the standard you know, and Gridiron football is what Americans know. Australians also call rugby as football, and football as soccer. Don't get mad at us for using the term someone else (the Brits) first coined. Although I think American football being called Gridiron sounds a lot more badass

We in the US also say fridge, roundabout, bill, road, and herbs with the H, though it's technically incorrect. The use of the words wardrobe, film, and cinema are a bit more situational. A closet would be called a wardrobe if it's not connected to a wall. We call movies films at a film festival and a lot of movie theaters have cinema in their titles.

the street is all of; the road, the pavement, and any houses which line it. tho to be fair, the americans are kinda right, it comes from the word "Stere", meaning to spread out. referencing the stones used to cover the road. so what is a road to an american? and if i said "the streets aren't safe", does that mean there's a lot of traffic accidents?
@littlearies3862
@littlearies3862 4 года назад
@@calhackit9806 "the streets aren't safe" usually just refers to dangerous areas. Like if there were drug dealers that walk around. Brit: We call them sweets because they are sweet! American: We call them candy coz.. yeh? Brit: We call it a film because they were stored on a film. American: We call it a movie coz.. movie... Brit: We call it football because you kick the ball with your foot. American: We call it soccer coz its just.. soccer? Yah knoww aha
@starringvincentprice
@starringvincentprice 4 года назад
Here's the short explanation to why those words are like that: Candy comes from the original phrase to describe those tasty little things, candied sugar! Eventually the sugar part was dropped and we just called it Candy. We call movies, movies, because back when it was "invented" (Fuck Thomas Edison) people used to call them "Moving Pictures", then those people said "Moving Pictures is a mouthful, we'll just call them movies instead". Thus, we call them movies. Lastly, Soccer. We call soccer, soccer, from what the British called it 200 years ago, Association Football. We just shortened it down from that to soccer since there were technically other forms of Football (rugby for example). Made it a bit more distinctive from the other "Footballs" *Note, I'm not an expert, I've just got access to google, I've probably gotten something wrong but y'know it is what it is
@trude8073
@trude8073 4 года назад
NerdsTheCandy it still doesn't make sense to call American football football since it has nothing to do with feet
@starringvincentprice
