This bird is so cute, we have a type of woodcock in the UK ,but I have never caught them dancing. There is also another bird to check out, the red capped manequin that moon walks.

Beautiful birds. I believe they have sensors on their feet and toes to enable detect movement or presence of bugs in the soil. so the dance beautiful as it is is a means of probing for food.

Could be but the Audubon Society says that’s only a possibility, no one is sure why they do it. They do it on paved roads too and they’re not getting any insect movement under that surface. I think they just groove thru life like we wish we could.

Perhaps this bird acts to find earthworms in the ground. If the leaves are properly piled up, it will be a good environment for earthworms to live in. It is a beautiful bird, precious video, and comfortable music.

Cool a few happy Woodcocks! A Friend & I rescue birds(mostly Warblers)that hit the glass skyscraper in Newark NJ during migration. The Raptor Trust TRT made a video of birds we bring in named 'Window Strikes in the Business District' of us collecting the injured warblers ( too long). 85% of Warblers make a recovery. No Woodcocks in video, Woodcocks do not have a good survival rate in Newark; last year we brought in 20 WC only 12 survived to be released. Newark is not good for Woodcocks as just this week saw a dozen expired due to the Glass Skyscrapers ( no big parks just the Glass), did bring one WS into TRT a few days ago it is still recovering ( they give you admit numbers can check status online - his number is 22-162 was in real bad shape surprised it was not DOA as found bloody on his back barely breathing) .

I think I figured out why the bobbing - if you watch around the 2:10 mark, notice their little claw feet come off and back down to the ground repeatedly [hence the body bobbing with this motion], and then after a bit notice it suddenly plunges down it's long probing beak into the soft soil to I assume catch the prey, which again I assume it has either provoked to movement with its feet probing, or it has found a soft place in the soil that it knows burrowing insects produce. Check it out, see what you think.

I would believe the "dance" would have something to do with sensitizing the bird's feet in order to have a better "feel" for underground grubs, earth worms and such.
@battery_wattage
@battery_wattage 11 месяцев назад
It’s a theory but not well supported. They still do the dance walk when walking over hard surfaces or ice, and they are intelligent enough to know that food can’t be found on those surfaces.

What the heck are all the specks of blue? Is there a blue flower that grows around there, or did someone dump a bag of blue confetti? [Update: found web pages that tell me Bryant Park has Hyacinth growing - I suspect that's what the blue is].

I do not like their species name. The 1970's porn music just makes the name of the species even worse, even more disturbing, even more sexy! Here comes the gardener to tell the lonely housewife that she has a severe problem with crabgrass.
