I was born in '91. Lomu was probably Rugbys first 'superstar'. I'm from Ireland, and started playing rygby when I was 7. Even people who didn't like/follow rugby knew who Jonah Lomu was.

Okay, I know Jonah passed away, but the word "passing" in "his passing was devastating" - for some reason I read that as in the way he passed the ball. . . which couldn't have been right, cos he didn't need to pass the ball much and on wing he was practically last receiver

The most painful moments in NFL for rugby players watching is when people run outside the lines to not take a hit. I personally feel betrayed, cheated, and hurt when players do that In NZ a player once ripped his nuttsack open, went out, personally stitched it up and got back into the game. Rugby is getting soft tho, these days they require a nurse and medicine to stich your nutsack.

The protection makes injuries more likely because they feel they are invincible. Also there are rules about tackles. You can't just run at someone and throw your head at them, yoh also can't make contact when someone is in the air. There were far fewer serious injuries in bare knuckle boxing because your knuckles were destroyed before you could do serious damage to your opponent's head. Body shots were more common.

The definition of a tough rugby player was Jacques Burger. Namibian but played for Saracens in England. The guy had no respect for his body. Broke most bones in his body. Now retired farming in Namibia

If you pick up someone or lift someone of the ground in Rugby, you are responsible for returning him back on the ground safely which is not easy to do if you are still carrying the ball and do not want to lose it.

They play up to two games a week. They're not allowed more than 30 full game appearances a season and that allows for charity matches, tours and all league appreances (each team in a league plays 16 games over 18 weeks)

Rugby players go through rigorous and regular testing for drugs. Even at school level. And it's surprise tests with medical staff present to supervise and exclude cheating the drug tests

Rugby players, we are wearing padding but not to the excessiveness of NFL. Helmets in NFL lead to a false sense of security and increase the impact of the brains clashing against the skull bone. The padding used in rugby is a layered padding that is worn under the Jersey. Google search "Rugby padding"
