Watch as we explore the different food sections at Ave in Yokosuka (Kanagawa prefecture). Not only do you get an idea of how much food costs, but you get to see some common foods. Hint: Every says produce in Japan is expensive...we have different feelings!!
We love grocery shopping in different countries! Living in Japan and having to is no different! Lot of plastic is because of the humidity which can damage fresh foods much faster than most of areas in us For same reason cookies or crackers are packaged one by one to keep crispy

Japanese strawberries and grapes are expensive, but the strawberries and grapes from Korea and China, which steal the seedlings from Japan, are cheap, but they aren't as sweet as the Japanese ones.

You mentioned plastic. 2:40 For example, this mushroom company (yukiguni maitake) trays are 100% recycled trays. As I have seen in other comments, there are many differences between Europe and Japan, climate and so on, and paper would increase food loss. As you can see in the video, we don't use them for anything we don't need, and some items are sold as they are. Each country is trying to reduce the amount of waste in different ways, but the ingredients used, the climate, and other conditions are different, and the systems for recycling, etc., are also different. Some supermarkets collect trays, milk cartons, and other recyclable items at the entrance.

Many foreigners, especially Europeans, do not understand how easily food spoils in the Japanese climate. You may think Japan is over-packaged, but even vegetables in the refrigerator can go bad in three days, except in the dead of winter. Europeans would surely be surprised to hear that even potatoes go bad quickly if they are not kept in the refrigerator from May to October. Much of the plastic packaging that wraps vegetables in supermarkets absorbs the ethylene gas produced by the vegetables and slows their growth and decay during storage. That is how difficult it is to keep food fresh in Japan.

Well said! We've noticed that we have to buy fewer items when we go to the store due to the fact that food spoils faster than anywhere else we've lived before. Especially right now where the heat and humidity are in full swing.

For sashimi, you can get delicious tuna from supermarkets like Aeon. You can eat delicious tuna for less than 1,200 yen.

Shokupan is so delicious. You can get it in the supermarket or a bakery. It’s so good as toast or for sandwiches. It’s the square bread. I could eat it every day.

nice video! my wife and I love the grocery stores in Japan. We've only been to Aeon/ Max Valu in Gotemba. funny story... in April we visited my friend in Hakone. quick 3 hr flight to Haneda from Taipei (we live in Tamsui, Taiwan) and took the shinkansen to Odawara, then a car to Hakone. after visiting there, and seeing how good the grocery store was and how cheap it was, we decided to come back again in June to buy a condo in Hakone. my wife will be back soon to remodel it. but i need to go back to Hawaii soon (where groceries will cost 10x more) 😢 but I'll be back to Japan asap. enjoy life in Japan! its truly one of the best places in the world. and keep the great videos coming. best of luck! ❤ 🇺🇲🇯🇵🇹🇼 😊 and Oh, forgot to mention. my ex-cousin-in-law runs a bar called Bar 605 maybe nearby you. probably decent American type food there. but I can't vouch for it, never tried it. 😂

Wow, that's great you were able to get a place in Hakone! We visited Hakone earlier this spring and will be back in a few weeks. Best of luck with the remodel! We did a big one in the US before moving overseas and it was a lot of work. Let us know how that process was in Japan. Thanks for the kind comment! From what I have learned, it’s common in Japan, that they sell strawberries or other fruits for different prices depending on the level of “perfection” of the single fruit! So imagine the most picturesque strawberries with the best taste (by variant) you would sense perfect to draw in a picture, will cost you more than the same kind of strawberries in a slightly different appearance! For example this is perfect 🍓 and the cheaper option has a split tip on the lower side.

In Japan, it is customary to give fruit as gifts to hospitalized patients. In such cases, it is considered rude to send low-quality fruit. In other words, in Japan, there are expensive fruits given as gifts and inexpensive fruits that are eaten by ordinary people on a daily basis. It cannot be denied that the fruits eaten on a daily basis are also slightly more expensive than in other countries, but when information is disseminated overseas, it is sometimes erroneously reported as if the expensive fruits given as gifts are commonly eaten.

Thanks for a tour of a Japanese supermarket. There are lots of interesting food options available. . Im definitely not an adventurous foodie, but did try some traditional food while visiting Japan. I think your family are very curious and adventurous when it comes to food so would fair much better than me with a change in diet. I had never tried Japanese cuisine until my trip there . 保存食と言ってたのは日本で酒のつまみです。ビールや酒と一緒に食べるものです。子供は食べません。日本では日本の食材が安いので日本食を食べる事で費用を節約する事が可能です。また日本食は味噌、醤油、酢、納豆など発酵食品が多く、味に深みがあって健康的という特徴もあります。お弁当を食べると日本食に慣れていくかもしれません。

@@OurStorytoTell Many Japanese people dislike natto, so it's not something you should force yourself to eat. Miso ramen and soy sauce ramen are recommended for their deep flavor of fermented foods.

The unspoken rule at the supermarket is not to touch anything you don't intend to buy. This does not mean that it is a buy or not buy result. If its nearby, you should try to shop at Aeon mall. It is very nice and have lots of selections too. The smaller supermarket would be My Basket Supermarket.

That seafood section! I would go crazy. Did you know it's just "Cup Noodles"? For some reason we all call it Cup of Noodles. I'm very grateful to Amazon that I can get toasted sesame oil and sushi nori in Germany.

Hello family fun video as always. I was surprised that you haven´t found good bread in japan. There are many foreign bakeries nowadays especially in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. For your area near the naval base i found a german style Bakery Brot Baum in Yokosuka at 6 Shinkocho, Yokosuka, Kanagawa 238-0005, Japan. You should find good bread and pastries there. Best of luck to the entire family.

Exactly. There are many good bakeries, both foreign and Japanese, and bread lovers usually go to those bakeries rather than grocery stores.

Hi!! Thank you for sending that over. We have been there and sadly it just didn’t live up to the standard Germany gave us! We wish it would have! We’ve even ventured to a highly rated German bakery in Tokyo & just couldn’t get in board. 😭 We do have to say they are definitely better than the supermarket breads, BUT, we have yet to find Germany bakeries that compare. The Japanese bakeries really are so great though! It’s been fun to try new things and experience their milk bread. Sometime we will do a video about it 😋😋

Yes it is definitely nice that we do because we prefer to get our dairy products and few favorite brands at the commissary, but we definitely buy the majority of items here! We love going grocery shopping in other countries so much 🤣😊 It is so interesting!

Very nice video！ I miss Japanese grocery stores. It was so eye-pleasing to watch! So, thank you! My Mom loves AVE. There is one nearby my parents live. She calls "ei bee." The other grocery store my Mom likes is "Lopia." Do you have Lopia by where you live? I agree with you about dairy and bread! When I went home to Japan last year, I brought Dave's Killer Bread for souvenior. They loved it! Wish that Japanese grocery stores sell heavily weighted lots of seeds and grains hearty bread. Dairy...I want the to sell yogurt in a bigger portion. 😋😋💗💗 I love your family!

I am in California and I am lucky enough to live near a small Japanese market and I get fatigued looking at all the bottles of sauces and dressings. I can only image how difficult it is in a huge market in Japan. I can rely on the import labels to get a translation of ingredients etc, but you don’t have that luxury! And you can only google translate so much… or you will be here for weeks!

If you observe foodstuffs in supermarkets, you may understand why the obesity rate among Japanese is so low. Seaweed, konnyaku (processed potato), and mushrooms have almost no calories, and tofu and fish are good sources of protein. Ah, you were the expert✨✨ I believe that the reason why vegetarian, vegan, and other diets have not developed in Japan is largely due to the diversity and abundance of ingredients in Japanese food and the food customs of cooking at home. There are three main types of dashi broth, the lifeblood of Japanese food: bonito broth, kelp broth, and shiitake Shiitake broth (mushroom). My husband is a meat hater and does not eat pork, beef, or chicken. However, there are 100 to 150 kinds of vegetables available at the supermarket, changing with the seasons, so there is no limit to the number of dishes that can be made only with vegetables. There are about 500 kinds of seafood! If you include eggs and tofu, I think you will still be able to enjoy unknown dishes even when you are over 100 years old🌱🌱 Have you ever tried butter soy sauce flavor? Vegetables, meat, and corn, grilled in a frying pan, seasoned with butter and soy sauce, and salt and pepper to taste. We Japanese love this seasoning💓

ah, what you call sesame oil were soy-sauce-based seasonings. Those include fish stock and are used for several Japanese dishes.

lucky for us that the exchange rate is so good the last few years making a trip to the supermarket less painful. stock up on those yen now just in case things go south. Japan grocery shopping can also be a trip down memory lane too. I went to an old mom n pop in osaka and they were playing big band music and all their customers dressed like it was 50 years ago. It was like an anti-walmart or an alternate universe. One classy lady all dolled up in a long dress with high heels transported my brain for a split second back in time to when my mom used to drag me to the grocery store. However, my favorite store is still costco. There is nothing more gratifying than going to costco and finding your favorite food or drink that had long ago disappeared in your stateside costco.

You need to go to Bakery shops to buy different sourdough and international bread. There are incredible selections available. Obviously Tokyo and in the surrounding areas. One does not buy bread in supermarket.

I recommend baking Bread yourself. It is pretty easy. As a German who lived for sime time in Japan. The only Resolution is Baking the Bread yourself. Kommt zurück nach Deutschland 🙂

I've heard don't eat Ramen it's not good for you but the Japanese eat lots of it and seem to be in better shape. One thing I was wondering about is the kitchen oven. Japanese ovens seem to be a small draw that doesn't hold much. Is this generally true. If you are in the service, thanks for your service. Very important work. Can't wait for new videos. Joe

I would have to shop at that supermarket several times to find all the products I've not seen in Europe. Quite a cornucopia, except for bread. Is it the case that Japanese don't eat much bread? What about poached egg on toast, for example? The first thing I would do there is find a German or French bakery. There's bound to be one. I love ramen, so trying all those different ones would be amazing. Here in England i can get the Nissin Soba brand, and of course Pot Noodles which are horrible.

We've found a few bakeries in the area, but they aren't the same. Even one that is labeled as German, is quite disappointing. Maybe we'll have to try our luck in Yokohama or Tokyo the next time we visit!

What the actual f! Those johnsonville sausages are significantly cheaper than I an buy them where I live (rural US). That really annoys me lol! I know prices are cheaper as a whole(those strawberries were way cheaper than i pay for crappier ones), but you figure that the American imports would at least be priced the same if not higher due to import cost. For reference I pay almost 7 USD at my local store for one of those packages you showed. I stopped buying them because they got too expensive. For those who don't want to do the conversion, thats approximately 1100¥ which is double the price in the video.

横須賀AVEですね！午前中行ったらもっと品数あると思うよ。日本の農産物は品種的なクオリティーや他の食べ物のクオリティーもとても高いと思うよ！塩サーモンはおにぎりに入れても美味しいよ😊 AVEから基地方面のポートマーケット内の石窯パン屋のパンは美味しいですよ！！！

They definitely use a lot. We do have to mention that the humidity is intense here so good spoils much faster. We have heard that is why they use so much plastic, but we definitely aren’t the experts!

the packaging in Japan is just too much! So much waste just to make it look more valueable. Plus not everything is that cheap there compared to Germany. Fish is definately cheaper in Japan.

Initially, that has been our impression as well. However, the recycling program here is on another level compared to any other country we've seen, including Germany. Not saying that there aren't parts of DE that don't do a fairly good job at recycling/reducing waste. That doesn't dismiss the fact that there is so much plastic/packaging, but nearly every day of the week there is a different item that is picked up from the streets. Example, Mondays and for PET bottles and metal cans. Tuesday and Friday are for burnable waste (food waste and other non-recyclables). Wednesday is for recyclable plastics, Thursday is for something else, and two other days of the month are for cardboard, lightly used clothing, and other metal/non-burnable waste. It definitely drops down the amount of items that go into general waste!
