All Seeing EYE The 60’s? Try the nineties when my mortgage payment on building a new small home on 4 and half acres was 600 per month and was paid off in less than five yrs. Because even in those recent times people saved and put down over 50% for what they wanted. If you can afford a 700 per month car payment then you can afford to save up to pay cash for a halfway decent used vehicle. In the 60’s people built basements to live in until they could afford to pay cash to build the rest of the house

I've been minimalist since 2017. And it was purely from observing from my family history. My sister got into debt from shopping addiction and she was still unhappy. My mom diagnosed with cancer, afraid of dying and back then I thought, what's the point of all of her luxury bags and items when faced with knowledge that you might die. My mom has been cancer free after treatment but the lessons learned continue. Since, I've been trying to build a simple life with less stuff and increase more free time to pursue what makes me happy and motivated in life.

Hey just a word of warning. If something you have now that you want to get rid of has previously served an important emotional function in your life but does not now and it's not costing you anything, don't throw it out. In about 10 years time you will regret you threw out your soccer ball that you used from ages 3-8 that you and your dad played with and now your dad is sick and fragile. Etc being with that ball will bring back memories.

excellent rant! I drive an old truck I bought new. A guy that works for me asked me when I was gonna get a new truck. I thought about it for a minute, since it had not yet occurred to me that I needed a new truck. I asked him simply "If I had an old dog, would you ask me when I was gonna get a new dog?" Yeah, the truck is old but quite well maintained from new, by me. 18 years and 270k miles. She is showing some wear but no tear. I'm not having a midlife crisis, but my truck might be approaching one. I might give her leather seats for her 20th birthday, or maybe just some seat covers... hehehee. It is a truck after all.

@Marc Archibald lol, he wasn't suggesting I buy a friggin econobox... but a new truck that isn't anymore fuel efficient than the one I have, I work for a living, and that truck is a tool I use to accomplish real work for people that expect me to get it done... so... you know. trwsandford My Dad did his best to push his 83 Dodge D150 to max miles, he died first in 98, oldest brother got it with around 350,000 miles I think, with lots of battle damage (it magnetically attracted cars that hit it, even when parked!) and he finally got rid of it after the second transmission rebuild (every 178,000 miles like clockwork!) failed, and the engine was randomly spewing oil past main bearings. Dad’s objective was a million miles, but it wore out in critical parts sooner than that. It got too expensive to keep it running. Eventually you’ll have the same thing, but if it’s still cheap to maintain and is reliable, I’d not replace it: as you say, it’s a truck! Beauty isn’t the important property, functionality is. If it’s all dinged up due to life, no stress worrying about new dings being added: it’s not going to keep it from being useful as a truck, and it’s old enough with enough miles that resale value doesn’t matter, and that’s great freedom!

@Shadow of Satos From Leo: " Go after rich people", what are you saying, take their money away from them? That is NOT what JESUS taught. Do you know the personal life of every rich person? Do you know how many are writing big checks to ministries, how many are paying for kids that are not their own to go to camp? How about the rich folks that have big houses that let missionaries on break live with them for free? Why would you disrespect those who GOD has decided to gift with money earning skills? How is taking money from the rich, even if they are unbelievers biblical?

@Shadow of Satos From Leo: I see that you are a theologian. Maybe you can help. Do you care to explain GOD'S response in the book of JOB 42: starting in verse 12? Maybe also how HE increased the wealth of Jacob. Or that JESUS himself was buried in a tomb donated by a rich guy, How about the vineyard owner that was overly generous to the workers who worked a short day? Or maybe how the wealthy man Boaz was instrumental in maintaining the Christ's bloodline through David? The Love of money is a problem, the wise use of money, barter, material possessions is not a problem. 1 John 3:17 is not possible if both are poor. Have you ever seen people in the same job, making the same money and one lives comfortably, and the other delcares bankruptcy do to poor spending habits? Please also elaborate where the Bible commissions others to go after anyone. Your statement was "Always confuses me why Christians don't go after rich people like liberals do". 2 Corinthians 9 says not to give under compulsion. I promise to keep reading my Bible on a regular basis. John 8:32

Having shelter sure makes me happier than being homeless. You don't need the most extravagant home, but having a home is a thing that keeps people happy. Money doesn't buy happiness, but a happy person feels even better with generational wealth. You don't have to live in the extremes (nothing or everything) that people tend to describe, but having wants helps drive many successful millionaires and billionaires. If you have no wants, you have no drive, and you will definitely need a "wants very little" mentality. I challenge you to not be normal... be driven to succeed and be successful. Think of your family instead of just yourself. It helps my family stay ahead of our peers and we are teaching our kids about wanting a sustainable family wealth and using their grit and hard work to continue the legacy. Trust me, it makes me very happy passing on wealth and real estate to my kids and eventually their kids.

I asked him how much was his car payment and would he be willing to let it go. He said, he was paying over 600 dollars a month just to drive it. That was more than my rent at the time. It was a sweet ride too (dodge charger RT)...fast forward a few years, he got rid of it, he's driving a used, paid for car, with good bones....and he's actually got a chunk of money in the bank, and a growing 401k...imagine that. Now, at age 32 after letting him take control over my finances and wreaking havoc with it, I am starting my debt free journey. After I finish paying off my car, I will have no debt. I'll prob start saving up for a house but honestly, it's not a necessity to me just as long as my son and I have a nice roof over our heads. The need to keep up with the Joneses is a real issue with many people. Thank goodness I stopped caring. While people are spending sleepless nights because of all the debt they have, I'll have the freedom to see how to spend my money. Maybe even go back to reselling or having some sort of business. When my son is older, he'll be lucky to have a mom who f'd up many times with her finances and learned many valuable lessons so that he won't repeat those mistakes. My wife and had an apartment the first year we were married and could not stand the environment, the ability of someone walking into my place when I was not home, and once when I was, the noise and lack of response on issues from the management. I made it a priority to get out and get a house. It paid off in the long term, as my home at that time, even though in a older not so attractive neighborhood, went up 20k in value. My second home has almost doubled in value. The only thing that doubles at an apartment is the rent. Even if the house owns you for a little while, long term it pays off big. A good example is what I keep encountering when I rent while working out of state. Landlords have their place so packed with useless junk that they can't take even a few of your (the renter's) items. I'd suggested to one landlord that she have a massive garage sale to get rid of the semi-loads of junk and old, unused furniture from her garage and house. She said she needed to keep it because of the "nostalgic value". If I were a devil dictator, I'd force people to part with their junk and give it to the poor in place of some of their taxes. Being an old muscle car enthusiast, now retired, my priorities are different now. My 2013 Challenger R/T w/6 speed does it for me!

@@Donzaloon I think you are confused of the word quantity vs quality, my gold ring dosent break down, my 2 phone dosent break down and my toyota dosent break down since I bought it used, its called maintaining it while you are still alive if you are compairing it to a hellcat that its owned by fiat junkyard it will break down within 4 years of owning it and it will become endless money pit that no person will own it especially if you are middle class or broke, dont let car ad fool you

I came across a minimalism-themed article a couple years ago titled "Your house is not a spaceship lost in space". Just that phrase really stuck with me. We fill our houses with every imaginable junk item that we might need "some day" just like a friggin spaceship, when we instead could have borrowed or rented it when need be, or bought it probably within 20mins from our doorstep not before the actual need would arise.
