Americans in India - in this episode we talk about the oldest American school in India and Satyanand Stokes, an American who introduced apples into Himachal Pradesh.
Woodstock is the oldest American school in India. Located in Landour in Uttarakhand, Woodstock was established in the 1850s. San Francisco-based Deirdré Straughan studied at Woodstock. In this interview she takes us through the history of the school and what was unique about studying in this American school in the the foothills of the Himalayas. Woodstock's alumni include actor Tom Alter, and his cousin the writer Stephen Alter and Chris Anderson, who is associated with TED.
"An American in Khadi," is written by San Francisco bay area resident Asha Sharma. In the book she takes us through her American grandfather Satyanand Stokes' journey from Philadelphia to Himachal Pradesh. Born and brought up in a well-heeled Quaker family, Stokes came to India in the early 20thc. He married an Indian, changed his name and spent the rest of his life in his adopted home state of Himachal Pradesh. He was perhaps the only American to fight alongside Mahatma Gandhi during India's independence and serve time in prison. What Stokes is remembered today is for introducing apples into Himachal Pradesh, which became a big source of income for the state. Today, Himachal Pradesh is one of the biggest apple producers in India.
